Lorena was born 28 JUN 1915 in Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Lorena died 12 OCT 1938 in Mansfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 23. Lorena died of strepthroat which could easily have been cured with penicillin had it been available in her time. Her obituary follows: |
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orris MUDGE, she was born in Mansfield June 28, 1915. She graduated from the Senior High School and State Teachers College and taught for two years at Coryland and one year at Big Pond. She was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
Lorena was one of Mansfield's popular young ladies. She possessed a happy, friendly disposition that made friends for her wherever she went, and she was a favorite among her teachers and classmates. An outstanding characteristic was her thoughtfulness for others, and through her long illness she was cheerful, ever trying to ease the burden of those about her. Her death brought deep sorrow to the community where she spent her life.
Surviving are three brothers, Earl and Eldridge MUDGE of Mansfield, and Cole MUDGE of Troy; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys STILWELL of Mansfield, and Mrs. Florence SMITH of Elmira, and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday at 1:30 P.M. at the Stilwell home and 2 P.M. at the Methodist Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles N. Ouderick. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery. The beautiful floral offerings attested to the esteem in which Miss MUDGE was held.
Pall bearers were Charles JERALD, Kenneth MERRICK, Kermit MERRICK, Ronald WEST, Seymour SHAW, Robert OWEN, Melvin BRACE, Richard SMITH. Flower girls were Miss Charlotte WADE, Mrs. Theodore BESANCENEY, Misses Mary NEAL, Beth MATTHEWS, Peggy CUNNINGHAM, Virginia FLEMING, Gwendolyn HENDRICKS and Janet WEST.
The following tribute was written by Mrs. Margaret LAWSON:
Lorena
October eve- glorious autumn, Trees with leaves of red and gold aglow. One could feel God's presence in Nature And his angels hovering low, For they came for Lorena- As the stars shone above, And took her in youthfulness, From all those whom she loved. For her death held no terrors, It was only crossing o'er To the land of life and beauty, There to dwell forevermore. Perhaps the angels who the birthday of Christ proclaimed so long ago Now came for the loving spirit of
the one we all loved so, God in His wisdom was in need of a
flower so fair To adorn His Eternal City, so he
placed Lorena there; And although our hearts are broken, For we shall miss her presence dear, We know that our loss and sorrow Will only make heaven seem more near.
Her body was interred 15 OCT 1938 in Prospect Cemetery, Mansfield, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.
