James was born 4 JUN 1769 in Connecticut ?. He married Sally Gray BEF 1814. James registered to pay taxes 1828 in Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Taxed on one cow.

James was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Census in Richmond Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. It is a surprise to find this listing in Richmond Township rather than Sullivan, but it is apparetnly because their property was right on the boundary line.

James registered to pay taxes 1832 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. 175 wild acres, 1 ox, 1 cow, valuation $199, county tax $1.50, state tax .20.

James died FEB 1842 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 72.

James was last taxed 1842. On the 1843 tax roll his name is written over by Sally's. An earlier source gave 14 FEB 1836 as death date but this is obviously in error. An entry in the ledger of the Mainesburg Store charges the Estate of McConnel Deceased to one coffin and Bier $5.75 dated 18 Feb'y 1842. The above Balance by Note Dec. 21st 1846. Signed L. D. Rumsey.

His body was interred FEB 1842 in Scouten Hill ?, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Probably buried across road from their house on Scouten Hill. As of 1992, this area is overgrown with brush and is full of large trees and woodchuck holes. James McConnell and Sally Gray migrated to Sullivan Township with relatives of Sally's named Wood, Bryant, and Smith. If we are surprised at the degree of inter-relatedness among present day residents of Sullivan Township, we must realize that these early migrants were already related through 200 years of familial residence in Fairfield County, Connecticut. James and Sally settled on Scouten Hill in Sullivan and cleared the land and built their home. This is close to the Richmond Township line.

know very little of James' family ancestry. He may have been born in Connecticut, New York, or New Jersey or even Pennsylvania. He may have migrated from New Jersey to Connecticut where he married Sally Gray, whose ancestry we know a great deal about. There are no tombstones for James and Sally. They were probably buried in the field above their home with field stones as markers that have long since been dispersed by plowing.

Sally was born 12 JUN 1785 in Redding, Fairfield County, Connecticut. She married James McConnell Sr. BEF 1814. Sally registered to pay taxes 1843 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. In this tax roll book, the name James is wirtten over with Sally, so his death occurred in 1842.
