Philene Mudge lived from 1835 to 1837. On October 8, 2008 we publish a few generations of her famly history in Ahnentafel Format to commemorate the 17istd anniversary of her death. [Ahnentafel lists a person as number one - father as double that number and mother as double plus one.

  1  Philena J. Mudge #695
Philena was born 19 AUG 1835.  Philena died 08 OCT 1837 at age two years one month nineteen days [per tombstone]. She is buried in the Cherry Flats [Baptist] Cemetery.

  2  Ira (Hiram) Mudge #691

Ira was born 18 JUL 1809 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  He married Clarissa Elliott* 21 SEP 1831.  Ira was listed as the head of a family on the 1840 Census in Covington, Covington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  The Ira and Clarissa household included one female and one male child under five and one girl in the 10-15 age bracket. They lived two houses from Nathaniel Eliot, same age bracket as Clarissa, who may be a brother of hers. Also Samuel Eliot, her age, and Nathaniel Eliot, age 70-80.
Ira was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census in Covington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ira was listed as Hiram Mudge in this census.
Ira was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census in Covington Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Both Mehitable (19) and Ira C. (21) are listed as teachers. Ira was a farmer.
Ira died 13 APR 1889 at age 79.  His body was interred APR 1889 in Cherry Flats, Charleston Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ellen Baker  (dab@3-cities.com) sent in information on this family with dates from a Family Bible.

  3  Clarissa Elliott* #692

Clarissa was born 12 MAR 1808 in Brookline, Massachusetts.  She married Ira (Hiram) Mudge 21 SEP 1831.  Clarissa died 24 JUL 1885 at age 77.  Her body was interred JUL 1885 in Cherry Flats, Charleston Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Possibly a daughter of Nathaniel Elliott. If original census records shows Maines rather than Massa s birthplace, this might confirm it.

  4  Ira Mudge+ #84

  Flags: 1883 Hist.

Ira was born 1 DEC 1776 in Unadilla, Otsego County, New York.  Ira was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Otsego County, New York.  Town of Pittsfield
He married Lucena (Sena) Unknown (Mudge)+* 1801.  He migrated from Unadilla, NY to Sullivan Township 1806.  Came on an ox sled from Unadilla in 1806. I do not know if Aurilla was born in Sullivan or Unadilla or on the way.
Ira registered to pay taxes 1812 in Tioga township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Tioga Township, at this time, was one of only two townships in the county and it included the entire eastern half of the county. This later became many townships that are still in existence today.
Ira registered to pay taxes 1817 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Sullivan Township was formed in 1816. It was taken from Covington Township. Its original boundaries included the southern half of Rutland formed in 1829, and the area that later became Ward and Union Townships.
Ira registered to pay taxes 1818 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ira registered to pay taxes 1819 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ira was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ira died 9 DEC 1822 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 46.  His body was interred DEC 1822 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Ira had his will probated 17 FEB 1823.  Adm. Aaron Mudge and David Fellows. Surety - John Becher and Wm. Patton. Buried in State Road Cemetery An original settler in Sullivan Township. Listed among the land owners at formation in 1816. Sullivan Township was formed from Covington Township. As it was formed, the territory now includes several townships. Ira and Lucena lived on the State Road.  that they were on top of a mountain, so they had to find other places. According to History of Tioga County 1897, Ira Mudge was on the tax list in 1812 and lived on State Road. (Page 558). Ira died young, after his wife, leaving several young children. Possibly his brother Aaron, or the older children of the family, brought them up. Ira was the first supervisor in township elections in 1819. See 1883 History page 332. He had 28 votes.     1883 Tioga County History page 31 of appendix - Came here on an ox sled from Unadilla in 1806 and took up 100 acres of land in Sullivan.  Tioga County Pa. Records 1804-1880 page 16 Will Feb 17, 1823 died 1822 age 44 Administrator Aaron Mudge and David Fellows. Surety John Becker and William Patton. Information from Polly Holmes says that Ira and Lucena drove their ox team up the dry bed of Corey Creek from Mansfield to Mainesburg and then up the slope of Armenia Mountain where they took up a tract of 400 acres on what is now State Road near the Baptist Church. They were the earliest burials in State Road Cemetery which is across the road from the Baptist Church, (but in no way associated with it) so it is logical that that may have been their original holding or that it was by the time Lucena died. Check land holding of the earliest times for information.

  5  Lucena (Sena) Unknown (Mudge)+* #237

Lucena was born 23 MAY 1775 in Connecticut.  She married Ira Mudge+ 1801.  She migrated from Unadilla, NY to Sullivan Township 1806.  Came on an ox sled from Unadilla in 1806. I do not know if Aurilla was born in Sullivan or Unadilla or on the way.
Lucena died 25 JUL 1819 in Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, at age 44.  Her body was interred JUL 1819 in State Road Cemetery, Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania.  Lucena was among thje earliest burials, possibly the very earliest burial, in State Road Cemetery. There is no evidence that Lucena's name was Godfrey. Ellen Smith Jacobus had presented this as a possibility because Stephen Godfrey Mudge had that name. She later discovered that Stephen's grandmother was Eunice Godfrey and her father was Stephen which accounts for his name. We need to look at Lucena's ancestry from scratch without assuming the Godfrey name. There is NO evidence for it, but it was passed on to many databases with no quality control and is recorded now in many areeas. it is WRONG. They were married, probably in or near Unadilla, NY.

  8  Joshua Mudge+ #81

  Flags: Rev.War.

Joshua was born 1737 in Haddam, Middlesex County, Connecticut.  He married Mary Cornish+ BEF 1768.  He migrated from Cannan, Connecticut to Unadilla, New York ABT 1773.  Joshua served in the military ABT 1776 in New York.  Joshua was listed as the head of a family on the 1790 Census in Unadilla, Otsego County, New York.  First Census of the United States - Montgomery County NY, Mohawk Town. One male upwards of sixteen, 2 males under sixteen. Female categories illegible. Can not tell if this is the right houselhold. I find not Joshual Mudge entries in Otsego Town. Need to find out where Unadilla was in 1790.
Joshua was listed as the head of a family on the 1800 Census in Otsego County, New York.  Page # 33, Age range in househols 10001-0110100
Joshua died 13 MAR 1821 in Chili, Monroe County, New York, at age 83.  I can not find that any of Joshua's children were in the area of Chili in the 1820 census, but Joshua is said to have died there. Joshua Mudge was born in Haddam, Conn. in 1737, and removed to Unadilla, NY in 1773. He was a farmer and resided in Canaan, Conn., where three of his children were born. He sold his farm Jan.1, 1773 and removed to Unadilla, Otsego County where six of his children were born, thence to Herkimer Co., Town of Newport where he lived for a short time. He then removed to Penna, Here he lived until old age came upon him when in 1819 he went to live with his son Ebenezer at Chili, NY, where he died. He was an active man in his day, voluteered  as a private in the French War of 1756 at the age of twenty and served under General Abercrombie at the siege of Oswego, NY where he received a wound by a cannon ball striking a rock, knocking off a piece which struck him over the right eye destroying that organ. He also served at times for two or three years in the War of the Revolution, was in the battle of Bennington, in Aug. 1777 under Colonel Stark, and at Saratoga on the surender of Burgoyne. He was also in other service as appears from the State records of New York. Two of his sons died in 1812 in the battle of Queenstown, Conn.  Extracts from Mudge Memorials, Boston, 1868, which in keeping with the traditions of the time, does not include the wife as a partner in the writeup. We can conclude that they were farmers and they sold their farm, etc. Rhoda Ladd's Tioga County Revolutionary Soldiers page 225. Joshua was a Whig in politics, he believed in the salvation of all mankind in religion. In the French War of 1756, he was wounded by a slice of rock struck by a cannonball which his over his left eye and blinded him. This happened at the Siege of Oswego.  In the Revolution, he was at the Battle of Bennington and was present at the surrender of Burgoyne.

  9  Mary Cornish+ #82

Mary was born 27 OCT 1742 in Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut.  Alternative birthdate is 2 NOV 1746. LDS records give 27 OCT.
She married Joshua Mudge+ BEF 1768.  She migrated from Cannan, Connecticut to Unadilla, New York ABT 1773.  Mary died 1808 in Unadilla, Otsego County, New York, at age 65.
