Tri County Clippings- Troy Gazette Register 1914 - 1916 - Yesterday's News

Typed by Pat MOTT Gobea, Elaine Frey
These clippings from ancient and fragile newspapers stored above the Troy Gazette-Register office are being typed by Tri-County volunteers for presentation on site. Primarily we are preserving the neighborhood news columns and the obituary, marriage and birth information included in them. I intend also to include articles that show the influences on the lives and attitudes of our local populations at the time, and I will also illustrate the individual pages with ads from the era. Nothing is more revealing of lifestyle than the goods and services available.
The TGR covers the area of all townships surrounding Troy and many neighborhoods have a local column submitted, but not necessarily every week or even every year.
Our thanks goes to the staff of the Troy Gazette-Register for giving us access to this valuable old news so that we can share it with you. There is no better way to understand the culture and customs of our old communities than by sifting through these clippings.  Even the names of some of these old communities have ceased to exist in today's world, but we have them captured and preserved here.  If you do not have the time to enjoy the luxury of sifting through clippings, these will be included in the Search Engine which you can reach from the "Front Door" of the Tri-County Genealogy & History sites by Joyce M. Tice.

Just over the creek of a grass grown hill
We find West Burlington so peaceful and still,
That one pausing to listen may hear the gurling brook
As it runs slowly past the old red mill.

The principal street is both long and wide
With houses and stores on either side
In summer many autos quickly pass
After pausing at the store to fill up with gas.

Here stands the little white church, where each week,
All love to gather and hear their good pastor speak
Of the wondrous beauty of Heaven above
Of the redeeming power of our Saviour’s  love.

The church basement belong to the Ladies’ Aid
Where with a good dinner, many a debt have they paid.
Across the way is Essenwine’s fine short time
Those who trade there always come back for more.

The school consists of several grades
Taught by a Professor and two fair maids
The pupils can learn much besides the three R’s
For Patience and interest the teachers deserve stars.

Already they have started a fine town hall
Where the band will make music for one and all
I(n front of these buildings is a very short time
From Towanda to Troy we see a street car line.

The red car on the line the girls seem to like,
The conductor is one they always call Pike.
The new cremery is run by a man that
Will look out for the patrons’ interest in butterfat.

The Burden Bearers are a class who are ready to serve
A company of young matrons with considerable nerve.
Next election when the women will vote
They will all be there, leaving the men at home, the babies to tote.

Pretty girls by the dozen who know how to work
And know not the meaning of that lazy word shirk
Even a town nurse who cares for the sick
Old maids having heart trouble send for George quick.

Over the creek is a large farm with fine stock to show.
There lives a grand old man they call Uncle Joe.
No millionaire in this place have I been able to find
But they are a kind hearted people who are cordial and kind.
