Testimonial Dinner

Honoring Miss Harriet W. Child

Note: Class Lists at end for 1915 through 1964

Typed from booklet made up for dinner. Typed for website by Pat Smith Raymond

Held at S. R. U. Joint School, East Smithfield, Pennsylvania, May 9, 1964, 7:30 P. M.

To A Dedicated Teacher:

We wish to pay tribute to Miss Harriet W. Child at the completion of forty-nine years of teaching in our school system. Miss Child has been a devoted, loyal, and conscientious member of the teaching profession.

She began her career in the fall of 1915 after receiving her Normal School Diploma from West Chester State College. She later attended sessions at the University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University, Northwestern University, and Columbia University. She also attended many meetings of our professional organizations of which she has been a member throughout her teaching career.

Miss Childs has been known not only as a superior teacher, but by her example, she has instilled in us the virtues of honesty, integrity, and dignity.

The new elementary school building at East Smithfield was named the Harriet W. Child Building in honor of the high esteem and appreciation the community has for Miss Child.

We congratulate you, Miss Child, for your years of loyal service in our school and we wish you many pleasant years of retirement.

We appreciate your—Value of Time, Success of Perseverance, Pleasure of Working, Dignity of Simplicity, Worth of Character, Power of Kindness, Influence of Example, Obligation of Duty, Wisdom of Economy, Virtue of Patience, Improvement of Talent, Joy of Originating----Marshall Field

Testimonials

Like the hundreds of others who came up through the Smithfield Township School in the past half century. I was launched into the educational world by the gentle hands of Miss Child. She did a good job, as with all of us. Yet my memories of the role she played in that particular process are indistinct because they are inseparable from a closer, more personal relationship with her that began, I suppose, the day I was born, and continued throughout my whole life. "Aunt Audie" Child was my next door neighbor and close family friend. The things she told me, the books she gave me, the love she bestowed on me, the counsel she still gives me---all have had a profound effect on the character of my life; and I owe her a great debt. ------------A. Eugene Blakeslee

I only wish that my three sons might have had the privilege of having been among her students—Robert C. Potter, Lt. Col., AUS. Ret.

It gives me great pleasure to take part in this small way in paying tribute to Miss Child.

In our ever increasing complex world, in which education is playing such an important part, few of us could have been more fortunate than to have Miss Child start us on the road to learning. Her patient guidance and teaching have been instrumental in helping hundreds of us make the transition from the First Grade to Commencement, and to later vocations in life. Thank you Miss Child, for your seemingly untiring services rendered our community. Otto Coldiron, Jr.

The number of us who started our schooling in Miss Child’s classes is impressive. I suppose it is considerably more than a thousand, maybe nearly two thousand. Most of us look back at the times we were in Miss Child’s classes with a good deal of pleasure. We were introduced to reading, writing, spelling and arithmetic in an expert fashion; however, the lessons seem vague now. The memories that stand out are the good times we had, the games outdoors at recess when the weather was good which were always the most fun when Miss Child played with us, the picnic on the last day of school with fruit jello, baked beans and potato salad.

The discipline was sympathetic, not at all harsh, and administered with a clear understanding of the psychological problems of the six and seven year old. But it was firm. There was never a doubt as to what was expected of us, and most of the time we did it. I recall a strong suggestion—it was not an order, but the intent was clear—that I confess to the principal, Mr. C. P. Howland, that I had thrown a stone through a window with destructive effect during the previous lunch hour. There have been many improvements since I was one of Miss Child’s first graders: new buildings, better transportation, improved teaching methods, electric lights. But I am sure that we all think that there will never be a better primary teacher than Miss Child. Paul V. Dimock

I sincerely wish I could attend this memorable occasion, but it is impossible. It is with great pleasure that I am given this opportunity to write a few words expressing the enjoyable year I had working with you. I cannot think of a more wonderful person to have worked for or with. I truly enjoyed every minute of it, and everyday we had a few laughs. I can still see you hurrying to lunch with your first graders and then filling their trays for the second time. They certainly kept you busy. One could see through the actions of these little children the love and respect they held for their teacher.

My only regret, Miss Child, is that I had but one year to work with such an outstanding person, citizen, and teacher as you yourself have been. Both Ralph and I want to wish you many relaxing and enjoyable years following your retirement. Bonnie Carls
