Photo is identified as N. J. Neal. It is actually William J. Neal. William was born January 1, 1881 in Blossburg, PA, an adopted son of his grandparents, William J. and Elizabeth Harer Neal who owned a farm in Liberty Township, Tioga County, PA. William's granddad called him "Willy". William's great grandparents were John and Elizabeth Hartman Neal who were pioneer settlers of the Liberty area. His mother was Mary Jane "Janie" Neal who died four days after his birth. His father was George John Schmelzle of Union Township, Tioga County, PA. William graduated with the 1900 class of MSNS, a member of the Delphie fraternity. From 1901-1910, he was employed in the C. H. Lugg Department Store at Coudersport, Potter County, PA. For the next two years, he was employed at the T. W. Judge Co., in Mansfield, Tioga County, PA. In 1912, William bought the shoe store of Mr. Homer Kingsley in Mansfield. William retired from the store in 1947 but still owned the business at his death on April, 13, 1952. On August 9, 1916, he married Miss Helen Pollack, daughter of James Pollack, Superintendent of the Fall Brook Coal Co. at Antrim, Duncan Township, Tioga Co. William and Helen had one child, a daughter, Jean Neal, who married Rev. Lawrence N. Manross.
William was a deeply religious man and had served as President, Secretary,
and Young People's Superintendent for the Tioga County Sabbath School Association.
He was a member of the Mansfield Methodist Church for many years and three
years prior to his death, he attended the Covington Baptist Church where
he taught the Adult Bible Class whenever his health permitted. He was buried
in the Union Cemetery, Liberty Township, Tioga Co., near the graves of
his parents and grandparents.
