2. Photo of Neath School
This photo from my family records shows the Neath School during the
winter of 1895-96. The school, no longer standing, was located next
to the Neath Church Cemetery on the far side away from the Church.
(The school can be seen in the accompanying photo of the church.)
My Grandmother, Mary "May" Elizabeth Williams (Jones) [b. Neath, 1881-1950]
is standing in the back row directly under the sixth window shutter from
the right. She married Hugh Jones, pastor of the Neath Church at
that time, on June 20, 1900 and is buried next to him in this Church Cemetery.
I believe the girl in this picture upon whose shoulder my grandmother
has placed her hand is Alice Evans [b. Neath, 1881-1975] who later received
international recognition for her pioneering studies of brucellosis (undulant
fever). [See: www.distinguishedwomen.com/biographies/evans-a.html
] I base this on comparisons with other published photographs of
Alice Evans and on the fact that Evans and my grandmother were contemporaries
and friends in Neath.
