1860 Miss Thurston's Seminary for Young Ladies, Elmira NY

While Elmira is noted as having the nation's first college for WOMEN giving an education equivalent to that received by men, it also had this school to train women, or rather  "Young Ladies," in the  practices believed to be suitable for their gender in that pre-feminist era. Other than music, we see no clue to its curriculum, but I would guess it was a sort of "finishing school" rather than an academic curriculum. It was apparently founded in 1848.
