Note June 2006 - Edward P. Ballard says that this photo is of Viele's Mills
in Troy, not the one near Gillett.
Attached to this email is an old picture of Viele's Mills reprinted
in a Troy Gazette-Register newspaper photo, circa 1980. The date of the
original picture is unknown.
An article from the 1833-1983 South Creek Sesquicentennial states:
"Viele's Grist Mill - was the former Dunning Gristmill located one
mile south of Gillett. Mr. Giles Viele had owned a large mill in Troy just
this side of where Rts. 6 and 14 merge, where Calkins Trailer Sales was
located a few years ago. He purchased the land here from Eben Dunning in
1887 and became proprietor of the mill. His daughter Bessie married Budd
Faulkner and his daughter Julia Boyd Viele married Francis Palmer and lived
there until 1974. She was 94 years old when she died."
The 1900 Bradford County Directory, South Creek Township, lists Giles
F. Viele as the proprietor of the Dunning Grist Mill. The 1907 Directory,
South Creek Township, lists Giles Viele as the owner of a mill and lot.
