Silas Gore Jr. was born in 1829 in Rome, PA, to Silas Sr. and Catherine
Elliot Gore. He was a blacksmith by trade and married Jerusha Jane Tuttle
(1841-1922) about 1859. They had one child, a daughter, Sarah Alice (Adella)
Gore. Silas came from a long line of patriots, having lost 5 members of
his family in the infamous Wyoming Massacre of 1778. Silas was also in
the Gore family line that included Obadiah and Samuel Gore, both judges
in Bradford County. Silas' family also paid dearly in the Civil War, with
the family losing Silas' brothers Samuel, John and ultimately Silas himself
in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863. He fought with the 141st Pennsylvania
Volunteer Infantry, a regiment raised mainly in Bradford and Susquehanna
Counties. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Gettysburg in an unmarked
grave. Silas' widow Jerusha went on to marry 3 more times and outlived
all of her husbands, and spent her last years living off Silas' Civil War
pension. His daughter Sarah married Charles Lent and moved out West after
1880.
The attached photo of him was taken just prior to the Civil War.
