New Microfilm Scanner at
Steele Memorial Library in Elmira
|
Steele Memorial Library in Elmira has a new tool that promises to be helpful
to researchers. It is a scanner, but instead of paper pages, it scans microfilm
pages or sections thereof. You can then create a GIF or JPG image and email
it to yourself. Or you can print it out at 25 c per page which is the same
cost as the other microfilm readers. Emailing it to yourself is free. This
includes the census microfilm, newspapers and all other materials presently
available on film at Steele. It operates like any scanner that you may
have at home, but the input media is different. It appears to me that the
quality of the scanned image is better than just the printouts as you would
get from the other microfilm readers. .
Here is part of a note from librarian, Stuart Finch. There is no charge
to the public for using the scanner to send print and pictures electronically.
However, our staff is responsible for setting up the scanner for use and
making sure that its security is maintained.
The library staff will enable users to scan microfilm, including fiche
if necessary, preview and size the image, save files to a gif format, and
send them to an off-site computer. Users must carry a library card in good
standing or show proper identification if they are just visiting.
The scanner computer also prints for 25 cents a copy.
Stop in at Steele and try it out. Remember, a staff member
has to assist in getting you started.
Success ! Owen shows the scanned image on the computer screen from
the newspaper film shown on reader at left. It only remains to email it. |
