| This is the cover of a promotional calendar sent out by the Davis
Funeral Home in 1914. It came with the death date of a loved one circled. |
| Note from JMT - Before the era of Hitler, the swastika was a
symbol that represented good fortune and hope. It is only since its use
as a Nazi symbol that we think of it as evil. |
| Note from JMT - In keeping with his times, Mr. Davis used the
euphemistic and sometimes condescending term "Lady" Assistant to
decribe the woman (his wife) who worked with him. "Both Phones" means that
he had both the Bell phone and Farmer's Phone. They were separate systems
and each required a separate line and number. Interesting that one could
choose the color of the hearse. Nice touch. |
CHARLES DAVIS, FUNERAL DIRECTOR, DIES FOLLOWING EXTENDED ILLNESS
Charles L. Davis, funeral director, died this morning at the family
home, 302 West Water Street, after an extended illness.
Mr. Davis came to Elmira 21 years ago to take over the S. B. Hubbell
Undertaking establishment which he managed until 15 years ago, when he
went in business for himself. He was assisted by Mrs. Davis and son Donald.
Mr. Davis was a charitable man and was liked by a host of friends.
He was a member of the Ivy Lodge of Masons, P.O.S. of A., Order of the
Red Men and the First Baptist Church.
Besides his widow he is survived by one son Donald C.; one sister,
Mrs. Star Casterline of Owego; one brother Bob of Watkins Glen.
The funeral will be held from the family home Friday at 2 p.m. The
Rev. Delos Abrams will officiate and interment will be in Woodlawn cemetery.
