Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business. All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. UFFORD Elizabeth Dr.
Dr. Elizabeth Ufford, of Southbury, CT, died on May 13, 2009. Born in Elmira,
New York on August 19, 1909, she graduated from Dana Hall in Wellesley, MA,
Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY and Columbia University College of
Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Dr. Ufford moved to Port Washington, NY in
1939 and opened a pediatric practice. Along with her private practice, she was
the Manhasset and Port Washington school doctor for several years and worked
for the Department of Health in Freeport, Long Island. She was also part of a
research team at Columbia which followed the lives of 40,000 babies. In 1975,
Dr. Ufford retired from pediatrics in Port Washington, moved to Southbury, CT
and worked for several years as the Assistant Director of Health. She is
survived by her son, Joe Carpenter of Port Washington, NY; daughter-in-law,
Pat; granddaughter, Jacqueline Carpenter Ivory and her husband, Chris, of
Miami, FL; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Laurel. Graveside services will
be held in Elmira, NY. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, June 17, at
11:00 a.m. at the Woodland Cemetery, Elmira, NY. Memorial contributions may be

JAMES HENY UHL, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Uhl, 218 Kingsbury Avenue died Thursday, Apr. 16, 1936 age 14 weeks. UNDERWOOD Mary U. Krolak nee: Underwood
Age 88, of Elmira, NY, died on Monday, September 6, 2010, at St. Joseph's
Hospital following surgery. Born in Elmira to Harold Underwood and Lenore
Sheeley Underwood on August 28, 1922. Happily married to Casimir J. Krolak for
61 years. In her earlier years, Mary was very active in Cub Scouts and Church
activities at the North Presbyterian Church including their food bank. She
worked for General Electric Foundry as a clerk, Little Joe's Variety Store and
the Byrne Dairy on Walnut Street. Mary is survived by her husband and two of
their three sons, James of Montour Falls, NY and David (Lynn) of Basking Ridge,
NJ; grandchildren, Blair and Colby Krolak of NJ, Tony Krolak of Texas, Eric and
Colton Krolak of Arizona; great-grandson, Anthony Krolak of Texas; sister, Dr.
Nancy Underwood Lynch; sister-in-law, Sharon Underwood; brother-in-law, Leo Krolak
(Harriet Mitchell); niece, Joanne Krolak; and nephew, William (Claire) Krolak;
and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by son, Richard in
2007; also by a brother, Richard; sister, Elinor; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard
Lynch of Iowa; great-granddaughter, Kiana Krolak; and granddaughter, Michelle.

UPDEGRAFF Derck C.
Age 66, of Elmira, November 26, 2008 after a struggle of several years'
duration with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy ("PSP"), a disease of
hopeless prognosis that he addressed with courage and dignity. Survived by his
brother and sister-in-law, Jan and Mimi Updegraff of Elmira; nieces, Karen
(Vincent) Stalker of Corning and Jill (David) Balderson of Basking Ridge, NJ;
great-nieces, Haley and Samantha Balderson; and great-nephew, Luke Balderson of
Basking Ridge, NJ; and several close friends. He was the son of Alec P.
Updegraff and Marguerite C. Updegraff, who predeceased him in 1968 and 1991,
respectively. Graduating from Horseheads High School, Class of 1960, he
attended Union College and joined the Elmira office of F. I. DuPont Company in
1962. He served the firm faithfully for 35 years through several corporate
transitions resulting from mergers, retiring from the position of Operations
Manager at the Elmira office of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 1997. Derck loved
family, friends, history, tradition, fine dining and picking winning squares in
sporting pools. His dry but gentle sense of humor will be remembered by all
those who knew and loved him. His family is especially appreciative of the care
and support he received from the staff of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center's
skilled nursing facility and Southern Tier Hospice. It was Derck's request that
there be no calling hours. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery at the
convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the

Arlene C. Age 78, of 753 Roe Ave. died Wednesday, December 19, 2001. Arlene was
born April 4, 1923 in Elmira daughter of the late Lyman and Hazel (Wood)
Updike. She was retired from the Chemung County Transit Authority where she
worked as a bus driver. Arlene loved her family and being an AARP volunteer.
Survivors include two nieces; Diane (Duane) Swarthout of Elmira, Robin (James)
Harness of Guilford IN, a nephew; John (Janet) Stempfle of San Diego, CA, 4
great nieces and 6 great nephews several great-great nieces and nephews. Her
sisters, Merna, Lucille and Muriel predeceased her. Family and friends are
invited to call from 11 am to 1 PM Saturday, December 22 at the James D.
Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral and committal services will be held at the
conclusion of calling hours at 1 PM with Rev. Janice Fitzgerald officiating.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Edward S. Sr. Age 83 or Elmira, NY, September 16, 2001 at the Skilled Nursing
Unit of the Arnot Ogden Medical Center after an extended illness. He is
predeceased by his wife Helen and his brothers, Louis, Robert and Richard
Updike and his sister Marlea Metzke. Edward is survived by his daughter Beverly
(Robert) Ermold of Elmira Heights, NY, his son, Edward Jr. (Karen) Updike of
Florida. His brothers, Charles Updike of Las Vegas and Raymond Updike of Elmira
and his sisters, Francis Dougherty of Florida and Betty Farley of Lowman; 6
grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews.
Edward was a decorated veteran of the US Army in World War II serving in the
Quartermaster Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre of operations. He was also a
member of the Rochester Masons and the American Legion and VFW Edward was also
a past president of ReAct Club Elmira Eagles and a past Shasam of the Redman's
Club of Rochester. It was Edward's request that there be no calling hours.
Military honors will be accorded at the graveside by the Chemung County Honor
Squad at 10:00 AM Thursday, September 20th, 2001 in Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira,
NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross
Disaster Relief Fund in Edward's name. Arrangements are by Ballard and Lindgren

Dr. Elaine L. UPDYKE, a microbiologist who recently retired from the U.S. Public Health Service in Atlanta, Georgia died November 13 (1972) from the effects of lung cancer. She authored several of her research studies which have been published in books and medical journals. Memorial services were held in Atlanta with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira, N.Y. Dr. Updyke was a daughter of the late Austin H. Updyke and a niece of Dr. Fannie U. Angelicola, former residents of Jackson Summit, Pa. She is survived by a brother, Gerald A. Updyke of Upper Saddle River, N.J. and an aunt, Mrs Pearl U. Thomas of Wellsboro.

UPDYKE Betty Jane Wood
Age 92, of Seneca View SNF, died Monday, October 3, 2011. Formerly of the Falls Home, for a short time she lived in apartments in Geneva, NY and then in Elmira, NY. Her home was at 5054 East Lake Rd., Romulus, NY on Seneca Lake. Born January 20, 1919 to the late Leona Moyer & Dorsey Updyke. Predeceased by her husbands, Edison E. Wood and, before that, Frank H. Frost. She grew up on a small farm on the East side of Corning with her three brothers Marshall, Charles & Robert (all deceased). Parents sold the farm and moved south to Elmira. She graduated from High School in 1937. For the war effort she worked as an anti-aircraft shell stamper for the Eclipse Mfg. Co., then worked for the Remington Rand as a machine operator, Kemper Insurance taking accident reports, Star Gazette in sales, a landlord and housewife, and as a volunteer receptionist at Geneva Hospital during retirement. Besides attending services at Seneca View SNF and the Falls Home, Montour Falls, NY, she attended Elmira Wesleyan Church, Grace Episcopal Willowdale Church, East Lake Rd., Romulus, NY, Emanuel Episcopal Church, Elmira, and St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Elmira. She is survived by son, Bruce R. Frost & grandson, Andrew F. Frost of Columbus, OH; sister-in-law, Eleanor Updyke of Elmira; and nephews, David, Brian, Robbie & Scottie Prentice, David M. Updyke of Rome NY and Jim Frost of Watkins Glen, NY; predeceased by a son, Frank C. Frost; pet dog, Zeck. She loved Seneca Lake! She was very giving to her family and always willing to do for others. Age 84 of Elmira Heights, NY. She was born October 19, 1927 in Elmira, daughter of the late Stephen and Lucille (Spotzik) Urchak and died Thursday, May 17, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital. She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Kenneth; several nieces and nephews including the following whom she and Ken helped raise; Terry and Donna Gooshaw of Millerton, PA with children Andrew and Jeremy; Rick and Julie Gooshaw of Elmira Heights, Heidi Gooshaw of Canisteo with children Shawn and Susan; Todd and Nicole Gooshaw of Weirsdale, FL with son Christopher; grandsons Branden and Brian Gooshaw of Elmira Heights; sister-in-law Judith Sabin of Weirsdale, FL. Josephine was a communicant of St. Charles Borromeo Church and a member of their Altar and Rosary Society. VALEGO Louis J.
Age 80, of Horseheads, NY, died
Sunday, January 31, 2010, at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY.
Louis was born on July 19, 1929 in Elmira, son of the late Leon and Dora
(Miller) Valego. Louis served our country in the United States Army during the
Korean War. He retired from Thatcher Glass after many years as a machine
operator. Louis was a longtime member of the American Legion Post# 154. He
loved gardening and walking at the mall, but most of all he devoted his time to
his family. He will be deeply missed by those that knew him. Survivors include
his son, Russ (Brenda) Valego of Chesterfield, VA; sisters, Florence Hanley and
Margaret (Cyril) Kochanevich, both of Horseheads, NY, and Frances Baker of
Elmira; grandchildren, Raechel and Brady Valego of Chesterfield, VA; many
nieces and nephews. Louis was predeceased by his loving wife, Thelma in 2007,
sister, Catherine Folmar, brothers, Leo and John Valego. Family and friends are

VanATTA - CLARK, Doris M.
Age 88, of Montour Falls, and formerly a longtime resident of 811 W. Gray St.
in Elmira, died after a long illness on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at the Seneca
View Nursing Facility, where she had been residing. She was predeceased by her
husband, the Rev. Robert J. Clark in 1983. Her surviving family includes her
daughters and sons, Sandra (Donald) Shepard of Penn Yan, NY, Lorraine (Terence)
Dockerty, also of Penn Yan, NY, Doug Clark of Burdett, NY, Greg (Jennifer)
Clark of Elmira, NY, Wendy Clark of NYC, NY, and Bruce Clark also of NYC, NY;
grandchildren, Karen (Bruce) Stickler, Jill (Chris) Lian, Valerie (Andrew)
Trerise, Julie Powell, Teresa (Scott) Hatfield, Amy Dockerty, Jessica Sedlack,
Cary Clark, Sarah Turck and Sean Clark; 10 great-grandchildren and many nieces
and nephews. Doris was born in Elmira, NY, on Feb. 21, 1920, the daughter to
the late Albert and Fannie (Clark) VanAtta. She was a longtime resident of
Elmira and active member of the Westside United Methodist Church, where she
loved helping out on everything from bazaar's to rummage sales. Doris was a
longtime member of Cooperative Extension and both a Brownie and Girl Scout
leader. She was an expert seamstress, cook and homemaker. She upholstered
furniture, made wedding gowns for her daughters, and sport jackets for her
husband and sons. She made many wedding cakes for local residents. She provided
a safe, comforting home environment that her children and their friends and
neighbors all enjoyed. She loved those joyous summers at the family cottage on
Far Rockaway Road. She loved hunting for night crawlers and fishing for that
"big one" with her children. Their love of the outdoors and travel
took family and friends on many camping trips locally and around North America.
Doris loved animals and her home became home to stray dogs and cats that nobody
else would take in. She would go shopping at the drop of a hat, but would enjoy
just sitting in a mall, watching others enjoying their time together. She
enjoyed her alone time reading, working on crossword puzzles, and sewing. Her
greatest joy though, was her loving family, and her home, where she was born.
Family and friends are invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 S. Main
St., Horseheads, on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, from 4-7:00 p.m. Her service will
be celebrated at the funeral home on Fri., Nov. 7, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. with the
Rev. Donald Guiles officiating. Graveside committal service will follow in
Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira. Special thanks to the many healthcare providers
and friends of both the Falls Home and Schuyler Hospitals' Seneca View Nursing
Facility for the care and concern of our mother, you always made her feel at home.

VANBUSKIRK –MRS. SALOMA RUTLEDGE, widow of Frank Rutledge died unexpectedly Friday morning (Sept. 25, 1925) at 6:20 o’clock at the family home, 905 East Market Street aged sixty-four years. Mrs. Rutledge was highly respected by many friends and in survived by a brother, Andrew VanBuskirk of Springfield, Pa.; a cousin, Mrs. R. B. Ford of Elmira; a niece, Mrs. J. Age 83, of Elmira, NY, died on Monday, June 2, 2008, at the Arnot Ogden Medical
Center. She was born on March, 31, 1925 in Elmira, NY to the late James and
Pearl (Ladd) Vandegrift. Jean was predeceased by her husband, Jack Kohena in
1980. Survivors include her daughters, Sherri (Jeff Ryan) Adams of Elmira, Mary
Beth (John Schill) Kohena of Elmira Heights, and Linda Jo Winslow of Elmira;
stepson, Daniel (Marlene) Kohena of AZ; grandchildren, Robert Adams Jr. and
Melissa Adams, both of Elmira; son-in-law, Bert (Darla) Adams of Big Flats;

Formerly of Beecher Street
Was born February 15, 1918 in Elmira, NY, the daughter of the late George R.
and Christina (Plank) Vandermark, died peacefully on Monday, December 31, 2007,
at the Elcor Health Services at the age of 89. Her sister, Ruth E. Vandermark
predeceased her December 20, 2004. She is survived by her brother, Arthur C.
(Peg) Vandermark of Horseheads, NY; nephews, Donald (Carolyn) Vandermark of
Macedon, NY, Arthur Vandermark Jr.; niece, Peggy Sue; cousin, Weltha Sullivan
of Elmira, NY; along with several great-nieces and great-nephews. Frances
retired from Newberry's as a clerk after 50+ years of dedicated service. She
has been a faithful member of the Southside Baptist Church since her childhood.
She always enjoyed knitting and crocheting for the sake of bringing joy to
others. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Olthof Funeral Home,
Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania Ave., Elmira, NY 14904 at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 4,
2008, to celebrate Frances's life. The Reverend David Daniels will officiate.

Age 73 of Elmira, died Fri. Aug. 24, 2012 at Corning Hospital following an illness. Born on May 30, 1939 in Ontario, NY; Richard was the son of the late, Raymond & Winifred Field VanDeusen. Formerly enlisted in the US Air Force, Richard was a self-employed Truck Driver for most of his life having traveled countless miles. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church where he and his wife, Carol Dolan VanDeusen were married on Sept. 1, 1962. Also surviving is their daughter, Traci VanDeusen; grandchildren, Riley and Katie VanDeusen, Erin (Joseph) Drake; honorary grandchildren, Connor and Sean Davis; great grandchildren, Emma and Joey Drake; sister, Frances Brusso, Rochester; brother, Robert (Myrtie) VanDeusen, Elmira; former daughter-in-law, Vickie Davis; several nieces and nephews. Marietta V. Record - Age 95, died peacefully on Monday, September 20, 2010, at
St. Joseph's Hospital in Elmira, NY. She was born July 24, 1915 in Elkland, PA,
the daughter of the late Harold and Carrie (Gleason) VanDusen. Marietta is
survived by her loving daughters, Judith Record Stiles of Elmira, NY and Jensen
Beach, FL, Jill Record and Brian C. Flynn, formerly of Hammondsport, NY and
presently of Naples, FL; granddaughters, Holly R. (James C.) Henderson, Alice
M. (with whom she shared the same birthday) (Wayne N.) Rickman; and grandson,
Thomas R. Stiles; great-grandchildren, Tyler J. Henderson, Eric N. Rickman and
Heather J. Rickman; and her half-sister, Delores Vassallo. She was predeceased
by her beloved husband of 65 years, Richard B. Record on March 18, 2003; her
youngest daughter, Joylinn R. Show on June 17, 2009; and her half brother,
Eugene Royer. She was also predeceased by her three sisters-in-law together
with their husbands. She is survived by her sisters-in-law, Betty Jane
Stayments of Avon Park, FL and Nancy (Charles) Bryan of Poquoson, VA; along
with many cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her last
lifelong friend, Doris Johnson Paul of Montoursville, PA. Marietta became a
resident of Woodbrook, 1250 Maple Avenue, Elmira, NY in 2002 and made her home
there until her death. Marietta's family would like to sincerely thank Laurie
Sweeney and her devoted staff for all of the care and tenderness shown to our
mother over these many years. All of your efforts big and small honored our
mother and humbled her family. Marietta was a devoted wife, mother and
grandmother. She loved her home, family, gardening, golf, music, playing the
piano and all the card games, but most of all she enjoyed hearing and the
telling of a good joke. She was a lifetime member of the First Baptist Church
in Elmira, NY. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service for family
and friends will be held at Olthof Funeral Home, Inc., 1050 Pennsylvania

ROBERT E. VAN
DUSEN, age 93 of Elmira, NY and Winter Haven, Florida passed away on
Sunday February 1, 2015. Robert was born November 22, 1921 in Horseheads, NY
the son of the late George L. and Minnie Mae Chase Van Dusen. He married his
wife, Evelyn Margaret "Peggy" Knowlton Van Dusen on April 3, 1945. Bob was a
Veteran of World War II serving his country with The U.S. Navy. He was a
retired Corrections Officer with The NYS Department of Corrections at
Elmira, NY. He was the owner and operator of a plumbing and heating
business. Bob was a member of Old Oak Masonic Lodge #364 F.&A.M. of
Horseheads, NY and a member of Airstream Club and traveled throughout the US
and the Square Dancer's Club. Bob enjoyed golfing, ocean cruising, playing
bridge and Euchre. Mr. Van Dusen was pre-deceased by his wife Peggy on May
23, 1989, his brother Donal A. Van Dusen on January 29, 1928, his father
George L. Van Dusen Sr. on May 27, 1966, his brother George L. Van Dusen Jr.
on July 1, 1978, his mother Minnie Mae Chase Van Dusen on September 27,
1995, and by his brother William H. Van Dusen on November 10, 2009. Bob
married his second wife Margaret Allmendinger Van Dusen on July 29, 1990 and
she pre-deceased him on December 28, 2014. Mr. Van Dusen loved his family
and friends and treasured the time he spent with them as well as playing
Euchre. Bob is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: James & Gail Van
Dusen of Fayetteville, NY and Jeffrey & Suzy Van Dusen of Chandler, AZ;
grandchildren: Carl James Van Dusen, Beth (Scott) Yost, and Jenny Van Dusen;

A lifelong resident of Elmira, died Fri. Dec. 2, 2011 at Elcor Health Services following declining health at the age of 64. Born on Sept. 23, 1947, Harry was the son of the late, Willis & Florence Paulman VanHouten. He was employed by Chemung ARC for many years. He accomplished life's daily challenges with determination and a warm smile. Harry touched many lives with his sense of humor and his kind and caring spirit. He enjoyed attending the Elmira Christian Center. Harry was active in recreation, bowling and going to Pathways. Surviving are his siblings, Lorraine (James D.) VanHorn, James (Bonnie) VanHouten, George (Karen) VanHouten, and Wayne (Robin) VanHouten; several nieces, nephews and friends he made while residing at the Wellsburg and Pine City Group Homes. Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Georgette was a daughter of the late Theodore and
Ethel Bernhardt VanKeuren. She was predeceased by her son Wayne E. Duryea on
September 27, 2002. Georgette is survived by her daughter Linda J. Reeves of
Genoa NY with her husband Gregory and her children, Michael, Shawn, Daniel and
Heather; son Robert F. Duryea of Patchogue LI; daughter Cindy E. Hoose of
Elmira with her husband Scott and her children, Jason, Jennifer, Lorie, Steven
and Michael; daughter-in-law Barbara J. Duryea of Elmira with her children, Kevin,
Karen and Kurtis; sisters, Doris Rignola of Florida, Barbara (Dick) Purcell of
Nevada, and Catherine (Ernie) Sprague of upstate New York; also surviving are

family, and her greatest joy was the time she spent with her children and

Age 87 of Horseheads, NY died on Monday August 29, 2011 at The Chemung County Nursing Facility. Dorothy was born August 12, 1924 in Dushore, PA the daughter of the late Douglas and Veronica Baran Cook. She was a retired supervisor at Hardinge Brothers, Inc. in Elmira, NY with over 40 years of service. Dorothy was a devout member of Our Saviour's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Horseheads, NY. Dorothy was pre-deceased by her first husband Frank Van Kurin on August 2, 1967 and also by her second husband Claude Thornton on November 21, 1998. Dorothy is survived by several cousins including her cousin Janet & Paul "Joe" Bird of Jonestown, PA and their family; long-time friends David & Lillian Loomis of Elmira Heights, NY and good friend Carmen Fedock of Van Etten, NY. A special thank you to The Third Floor Nurses and Staff of The Chemung County Nursing Facility for the excellent and compassionate care given to Dorothy during her stay. Age 77, of Elmira, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at Arnot Ogden Medical
Center - 4D. Bill was born May 15, 1931, in Portville, NY, the son of the late
Jesse and Blanche Ingram VanSickle. He is also predeceased by his sister, Mary
Rachel. Bill is survived by his beloved family: Susan Valuch VanSickle, wife of
37 years; daughter, Amy M. VanSickle; daughter and son-in-law Karen E. &
Lee P. Kraszewski and grandchildren, Jessica, Andrew, & Stephen;
sister-in-law & brother-in-law, Pauline & Gary Granger; nieces, Paula
Miller & Vicki Rachel; several cousins and nephews; and his loving
Weimaraner, Cole. Bill served in the Korean War with the U.S. Marine Corps and
then worked as an auto mechanic for 35 years. Bill's greatest love was the time
spent with his family, who will cherish the memory of his extraordinary sense
of humor. He also loved to cook, read, and watch classic movies. Bill had an
avid interest in classic cars and vintage airplanes. He loved Formula One
racing and volunteered for 20 years on the track crew at Watkins Glen. His

Left this world to be with those she missed; on Thursday, June 21, 2001 at St. Joseph's Hospital following an illness at the age of 80. Edna was born on September 5, 1920 in Rathbun, NY daughter to Benjamin H. and Cora Mae Hanshaw VanSile. She married Howard Yorke on November 21, 1941; together they raised a loving close family and made the Southside of Elmira home for many years. Edna loved being a homemaker and was known for her many collectibles. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, and caring for her family. A visit to her home would bring a soft word and warm smile. Elmer VanValkner died at his home near Elmira on Monday, August 20, 1923, of
cancer. About five years ago he purchased and moved onto a farm near
Elmira; until that time he had spent practically all his life in Tioga county,
Pa. He was born in Sullivan, July 30, 1861. February 12, 1889, he
was married to Miss Grace Smith, who has been a true and faithful wife and
loving companion all these years. He was a man of quiet nature and
devoted to his family. He was a kind and thoughtful neighbor, a loving
husband and father, and will be greatly missed, not only in his home, where
friends were dearest, but by the entire community. He had been a sufferer
for the past year; and all that loving hands could do was done by his family to
make his last days comfortable. He leaves besides his widow, one son,
Winfield Van Valkner, of Elmira, and one daughter, Mrs. Ray Rineboldt, at home;
also one sister, Mrs. John Marvin, and two brothers, Herbert and Burt Van
Valkner, all of Wellsboro. The funeral services were held at the home on
Wednesday, the Rev. Carl McConnell officiating burial in the family plot at
Woodlawn cemetery, Elmira.

Age 55 of Elmira, NY. He was born September 9, 1956 in Hornell, NY, son of the late Dale Vaughan and Wanda (Bates) Skinkle and died Monday, February 13, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital after a long battle with lung disease and cancer. VIEWEG –DONNA V. MENEELY, age 82, passed away Thursday evening June 11, 2015. A Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday June 13th, 1 p.m. from the Sodus United Third Methodist Church. Private interment with her being laid to rest next to her beloved husband Robert will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Elmira. Born in Elmira, New York, Donna was the daughter of the late Otto and Florence Decker Vieweg. She received her undergraduate degree from Elmira College, and a Masters Degree in Education from Cornell. Donna began her long and distingusied teaching career during the 1955-56 school year in the Sodus School District. It was in Sodus where she met her future husband Robert, they were married in 1957. In 2007 they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary shortly before Bob's death. Donna and Bob hosted many foreign exchange students over the years. Donna was the organist at the Sodus United Third Methodist Church. She truly loved musical productions, and continued to play piano for the choir and the Drama Club productions at Sodus Central. A Patron of the Arts, Donna loved the Opera, attended many productions by Gatesinger Co. at Gates Hall in Pultneyville, was an avid animal lover, and an advocate for animal's rights. Donna was predeceased by her husband Robert Meneely, her parents Otto and Florence Vieweg, sisters Eleanor Vieweg and Jean Youmans, brother Howard Vieweg Sr. Survivors include her daughter Katherine (John) Graf, son David (Karen) Meneely, and nephew Gary (Nancy) Youmans. Sodus: Miss Eleanor Vieweg died on January 24, 2012. She was born October 10, 1926 at Arnot-Ogden Hospital in Elmira, NY. Eleanor was predeceased by her grandparents; Rev. Rudolf and Emma Vieweg of Elmira and John and Mary Elizabeth Decker of Elmira; her parents Otto and Florence Vieweg of Binghamton; siblings Jean Youmans of Binghamton and Howard Vieweg Sr, of California. She is survived by her sister Donna Meneely of Sodus, NY; nieces Dr. Cheryl (Jason) Blonstein of Brooklyn, and Katherine (John) Graf of Chester, NY; nephews Stuart Youmans Jr. of Binghamton, Gary (Nancy) Youmans of Apalachin, NY, Charles (Martha) Vieweg of California, Howard (Dana) Vieweg Jr. of California, David (Karen) Meneely of Sodus, NY as well as several great nieces and great nephews and cousins. A graduate from Cornell University's Home Economics Department in 1948, Eleanor had worked for NYSEG in Binghamton, GE in Corning and Connecticut, and spent over 40 years at Jersey Central Power and Light Company in Asbury Park, NJ. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, knitting, reading (especially mystery and detective books) working on jig-saw and crossword puzzles and word games. She loved her family and her pets. VILANDER –HELEN V. CARR, age 98, of Southport, NY passed away on January 24, 2017 with loving family by her side after a brief stay at St. Joseph's Skilled Nursing Facility. Helene, the daughter of the late, Arvid and Rachel (Theigler) Vilander, was born December 6, 1918 in Corning, NY. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, William M. Carr; her son, Roger V. Carr; and grandson, Teddy Dickerson, Jr. Helene is survived by her daughter, Diane (Laurence) Kasper of Roseville, PA; daughter-in-law, Mary C. She and her beloved Bill met at Keuka Lake and spent every summer there during their 67 years together. Helene worked at Elmira Tobacco, Chemung Canal Trust Company, and Chemung Electronics. She was active in the schools of her children, the former YWCA Mothers' Club and was a charter member of Hither & Yon Home Bureau where she began her love of crafts. She was very proud of her Scandinavian heritage. She visited Norway with her mother as a very young child and, as an adult, kept in touch with Norwegian relatives, several of whom visited her and Bill. She never missed a family gathering, always leading the holiday mealtime blessing in Norwegian. Helene dearly loved her grandchildren, dogs, ducks and chocolate. Services will be private. Painted Post, N.Y. — Jean E. Nichols, age 88, of Painted Post died on
Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Absolut Care At Three Rivers. Mrs. Nichols was
born on September 12, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Virgil A. and
Marion F. (Nunes) Vines. She married Leland H. Nichols on January 18, 1943 in
New York City. Jean was artistic, and a talented freelance writer who had
some of her works published in magazines and newspapers. Whenever Jean
left her house, she always strived to look her best. She loved to spend her
time shopping, and could be considered a fixture on Market Street. In her
earlier years, she loved to dance. Always an animal lover, she enjoyed
the companionship of her cats. Jean is survived by one daughter, Jean Amadeo of
Cold Spring Harbor, NY; and four sons, Thomas J. Nichols of Corning, Edward
(Kathy) Nichols of Marietta, GA, James (Kim) Nichols of Ocoee, FL, and Chris
Nichols of Hunter’s Run, GA; eight grandchildren; and three

Jeanette Age 93, of Horseheads and formerly a longtime resident of Robinson St.
in Elmira, died after a lengthy and courageous battle with Alzheimer's Disease
on Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2005. She was born July 5, 1912 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the
daughter of James and Jeanette (Wilson) Vivian. Her surviving family includes
her nieces and nephews, Doris (Frank) Bystrom of Miami, FL, Mary Helen (John)
Hewitt of Abilene, TX, Robert Vivian of Chico, CA; along with a cousin, Agnes
Bardole of Williamsport, PA; and several grandnieces and grandnephews.
Jeanette, along with her husband, Rene' Demure who predeceased her in 1959, had
been residents of Elmira since 1954. She was a member of Centenary United
Methodist Church in Elmira and a devoted homemaker. Family and friends are
invited to call at the Barber Funeral Home, 413 So. Main St., Horseheads, NY on
Thursday, Nov. 17, 2005, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. where her service will

Beaver Dams: Age 91, formerly of Elmira, died on Friday, April 1, 2011, with her children by her side. Marie was born April 8, 1919, in Elmira, a daughter of Herman and Marie (Rumpmeyer) Vogel. She is predeceased by her husband, John J. "Pepper" Prapestis; brothers, Herman, William, Frank, Ludwig, and Emil Vogel; and good friend Elise Calhoun. Marie is survived by daughters and son-in-law, Christine M. and Timothy Putman of Beaver Dams, and Patricia A. Prapestis of Buffalo; son and daughter-in-law, William P. and Maureen Prapestis of Elmira; sister, Louise Shoemaker of Murphy, NC; grandchildren, Laurie Tietje, Erica (Paul) Kinney, and William Prapestis; great grandchildren, Aaron Lee and Brook Marie Tietje; step granddaughter, and special caregiver, Stacy Putman; along with several nieces and nephews. Age 70, of Maple Ave., Elmira, NY, died Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at the
Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, OH. James was born on October 22, 1937 in
Elmira, son of the late James Sr. and Ellen (Hanrahan) Voorhees. Survivors
include his sons, James (Sandra) Voorhees III and Ernest "Matt"
(Tracy) Voorhees, both of Elmira; grandchildren, Nicole, Alan "AJ",
Jacob and Matthew Voorhees; brother-in-law, Gerald Butts; niece, Sherrie Butts;
nephew, Jamie Butts. James was predeceased by his sister, Jeanne Ann Butts.
James retired from Grand Union in Vestal, NY as a butcher after many years of
service, and was a recent employee of the State of New York with the Soaring
Eagles Golf Course. He was the past Exalted Ruler of Elmira Lodge #62, Elks
State Vice President, Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler and Southern
Tier District Vice President. James was also a board member of the State
Veterans Administration and for many years he was Lodge Hoop Shoot Chairman and
was District and Lodge Major Projects Chairman. He was also Youth Chairman for
the Southern Tier District and other various Youth Committees too numerous to
mention, and attended many Elks State and National Conventions. Family and
friends are invited to call on Tuesday, September 2, 2008 from 2 to 4 p.m. and
6 to 8 p.m. at James D. Barrett Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 8
