Mrs. M. D. (Rachel) Chase, aged eighty-four years, died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Lydia Leonard, in the town of Horseheads, at 8:30 o'clock this morning. AXLER, Stanley J. Age 69 of 610 Terry Hill Road, Horseheads, NY. Saturday, June 21, 1997 at St. Joseph's Hospital. Mr. Axler was born on September 21, 1927 the son of James and Rose Martinek Axler on his parents' farm on Terry Hil Road where Stanley was a life long resident. Stanley was a dairy farmer his entire life, a member of the Premysal Otkar in Newfield, NY, and a member of the Czechoslovakian Moravian Club in Endicott, NY. Stanley was a gentle man and gave freely to his family and fellow man. He is survived by his wife, Olga Haluskova Axler; step-children: Dr. Robert and Kelly Praino, PHD of Montour Falls, NY, Rosemarie Eddy of Watkins Glen, NY, Anne Praino of Horseheads, NY; grandsons: Jason Eddy of Watkins Glen, NY, Matthew Praino of Montour Falls, NY Liam Praino of Montour Falls, NY; granddaughters Vanessa Eddy and Sara Eddy both of Watkins Glen, NY; great-granddaughters: Andrea Eddy and Shannon Eddy both of Watkins Glen, NY; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marie Wiererovo and Dr. Antonio Wierer and thier children Olga and Sona of The Czech Republic. Several cousins including Mrs. Frances Sullivan and Mr. Franklin Kocourek both of Horseheads, NY. BALES - Mrs. Charles Snyder died at the family home in Veteran, Tuesday evening aged fifty-seven years. BANNISTER - Elihu Bannister Elihu Bannister 90, died Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Millspaugh on Upper Lake street. He is survived by a son, James of Breesport; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Millspaugh of Upper Lake strret and Mrs. Lizzie Cirkendall, formerly of Ulysses, Pa.; two sisters, Harriet and Delphine Bannister of Horseheads; several grand, great grand and great great grandchildren. A prayer service was held at the home of Mrs. Millspaugh Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The funeral was held in the Sullivanville M. E. Church at 2 p.m. The Rev. H. H. MacArthur officiated. Samuel C. BENJAMIN died Thursday morning last at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Harry Miller, near Breesport, at an advanced age. Just a week before Mrs. Benjamin died after a brief illness. Mr. Benjamin had long been a successful farmer of the town of Veteran, residing some distance beyond Sullivanville, where he was known and respected as a man of high morals and Christian principles. There survive two daughters, Mrs. Harry Miller of Breesport, and Mrs. W. T. Fitzgerald of New Albany, Pa. The funeral was held at the Sullivanville Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, Rev. W. H. BRIGHAM, Mary - Mrs. Norris M. Compton died at the family home in Horseheads yesterday morning at 8:45 o'clock, aged seventy years. The decendent is survived by her husband, three daughters, Mrs. James R. Fitzgerald of Sugar Grove, Ill.; Mrs. Louis H. Lent of Ridgefield Park, N. J. and Mrs. John Ford Leffler of Attica; and one son, William R. Compton of this city, also one brother, Johnson Brigham of Des Moines, Iowa. The funeral will be held tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the home. BUTTERS Mrs. Mary Manning, aged seventy-six years, died Monday at 12:18 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irvan Ervay above Sullivanville. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ervay and one grandson Charles Ervay of Sayre, Pa. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Sullivanville Presbyterian(?) Church. The Rev. CHAPMAN - Mrs. Frances Chapman Linderberry, 90, died at 12:20 a.m. Thursday, Apr. 23, 1942 at the home of a son, Joseph H. Linderberry, Sullivanville, after an extended illness. She was a member of the Sullivanville Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Joseph H. Linderberry of Sullivanville, C. Fred Linderberry of Elmira; a brother, William B. Chapman of Elmira Heights; two grandsons, Lawrence of Rochester and Ronald of Sullivanville. The body is in the Barber Funeral Home, Horseheads, and this evening will be removed to the home of her son in Sullivanville, where the funeral will be held Saturday at 3:30 p.m., the Rev. Mrs. Mary Chapman Dobell, 74, died at her home in Sullivanville on Tuesday
afternoon, Nov 19, 1935. The body was removed to the Gustin Funeral Home where
it will remain until this afternoon when it will be returned to the family
home. Mrs. Dobell is survived by one son, Raymond of Sullivanville; two
sisters, Miss Lois Chapman & Mrs. Francis Linderberry of Elmira Heights,
one brother, W.B. Chapman of Sullivanville; & three grandchildren. The
funeral will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. from the family home with the Rev.
O.S. Bardwell officiating. Burial in Veteran Cemetery.
COE - The death of Lillian May, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Coe of Sullivanville, ocurred Thursday night after a brief illness. Miss Coe was 23 years of age and was widely known, having many friends in Horseheads. She was an only child. The funeral was held at the Sullivanville Methodist Church Sunday afternoon, Rev. W. H. George H. DAILY
George H. Daily died this morning in at the home of his grandfather, George
Slocum, in Sullivanville, after an illness of six days of pneumonia. He
was twenty-three years old and is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Daily, and
his grandfather. There will be a prayer service at the home Saturday at
1:30 p.m., and the funeral in the Methodist Episcopal Church at Sullivanville
at 2 p.m. The Rev. R. D. Stanley will officiate and burial will be in the
Van Duzer cemetery.
EAGEN, Anne, Mrs. Lewis (Anne) Hawkins died at the family home in Veteran Friday at 9:30 a.m., aged sixty-eight years. She is survived by three daughters, Alice and Grace at home and Mrs. L. B. Grimes of Elmira. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. and the Rev. Elmer J. Verden of the Horseheads Methodist Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in the VanDuzer cemetery. HAMMEL - Mrs. Francis R. Smith Mrs. Francis R. Smith, Town of Horseheads, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1937. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. H. S. Jones of Elmira, Mrs. Edwin Rodgers of Ocean Grove, N. J.; one daughter Mrs. Mabel Foster of Horseheads; a son, Ernest Smith of Elmira, six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Mrs. Smith was one of the first employees of the Queen City Knitting Mills at Elmira Heights. The body is in the home of a son, Ernest Smith, 529 Broadway, Elmira, where the funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. Rev. E. S. Bardwell of Millport. Burial in Van Duzer Cemetery, Town of Veteran.
HAMMOND - Mrs. Phoebe Hammel Mrs. Phoebe Hammel died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary L. Smith in Philadelphia Friday, age seventy-nine years. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. H. S. Jones, of Elmira, Mrs. Joseph Hehle, Parsons, W. V.; Mrs. Effie Rodgers of Ocean Grove, N. J.; Mrs. Francis Troop. of Elmira; one brother Aaron Hammond of Van Etten. She was a resident of Elmira and vicinity many years and was beloved by all who knew her. The remains will be brought to Elmira and the funeral announced later.
HAWKINS - Marietta Hehle Mrs. Marietta Hehle, 84, of Pine City, widow of Frank Hehle, died Saturday morning, Apr. 11, 1942. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. J. M. Enedy of Pine City; two grandsons, Ralph Hehle of Owego and Elliott Hehle of Endicott; two granddaughters, Mrs. Theresa Faulkner of Pine City and Mrs. Donald Miller of Elmira; seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Samuel C. Benjamin died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Miller, at Breesport, last night, after a brief illness. Mrs. Benjamin's home is near Sullivanville and she was taken sick while on a visit with her daughter. Deceased was an estimable lady and her sudden demise is extremely regrettable. There survives the husband and two daughters, Mrs. Miller of Breesport, and Mrs. Fitzgerald, wife of W. T. Fitzgerald of New Albany, Pa. The funeral arrangement have not been fully arranged, but the service will probably be held Saturday in the Methodist Church in Sullivanville, of which deceased was a member. Avis M. HULBERT, aged 16 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hulbert, died at the home of her parents above Sullivanville at 11:20 o'clock Friday night. She is survived by her parents and one sister Vera. She was a member of the Sullivanville Methodist Church. The funeral will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The Rev. JACKSON - Louise M. Thompson, age 82, of Wellsboro, PA died Friday, July 3, 2009 at Broad Acres Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wellsboro, PA. Louise was the wife of the late Richard T. Thompson who died in 1978, and the late Donald F. Thompson who died in 1998. Louise was born November 30, 1926 in Cuba, the daughter of Arved and Scafania (Marton) Jackson. She was a member of the St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Wellsboro, PA. She loved cats. Louise is survived by two sons and daughters -in-law, Richard T. and Kay Thompson of Prince Frederick, MD, Donald and Lois Thompson of Wellsboro, PA, two grandchildren, Thomas and Kenneth Thompson, and a sister, Rose Marie Zurkan of Ventura, CA. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Newtown, PA. Burial will be in Newtown Cemetery, Newtown, PA. Chas. LINDERBERRY Met Terrible Death
Kayuta Hill Resident, After Day in Elmira, Fell Out of Wagon Between Horses,
Which Ran Away, Horribly Mangling His Body
Charles Linderberry who lived on top of what is known as Kayutah Hill, beyond
Sullivanville, met a terrible death early last evening, after a day spent in
Elmira shopping. The deceased was between fifty-five and sixty years of
age and a well-known resident of that section of the country. Mr.
Linderberry left this city late yesterday afternoon, driving a spirited team,
attached to a light wagon. When a short distance beyond Sullivanville it
is though he was taken suddenly ill and pitched head first over the dashboard
and between the animals, striking on the springs. The horses became
frightened and ran away. A man passing in a wagon discovered
Linderberry's predicament, and going into a nearby house where there was a
telephone, phoned ahead for someone to stop the team. That was done and
Linderberry was taken into a farmhouse where he died in a few minutes.
The body was horribly mangled. Probably the horses kicked him as they ran
and the wheels coming in contact with the body caused innumerable

Mrs. Lounsbury is survived by daughter, Mrs. Lawhead, a granddaughter, Julia Lawhead of Horseheads; four nieces and three nephews. William H. LONGCOY died this morning at 10 o'clock at the family home at Sullivanville aged seventy years. He was a veteran of the Civil War, having served as a corporal of Co. A, 107 N. Y. Vols. for a period of three years. Mr. Longcoy was also a member of Wilson Dean Post G. A. R. of Millport. He is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Edith T. Bush and Mrs. Effie Turner of Sullivanville. The funeral will be held at the home Sunday at 2 p.m., the Rev. M. A. Soper to officiate. Burial in the Van Duzer cemetery in the town of Veteran. Charles D. Mallory, a former resident of Horseheads, died yesterday at
Unatilla, Florida. He left Horseheads to reside in Florida about six
years. The decedent is survived by his daughter, Marie Mallory of
Interlaken, N. Y., and a brother, Frank M. Mallory of Horseheads. The
remains will be removed to Horseheads and the funeral will be announced later.

October 13, 1819, and removed to Chemung County with her parents in 1820. She is survived by her son Norris M. Compton of Horseheads; four grandchildren; William R. Compton, of Elmira, Mrs. J. R. Fitzgerald of Aurora,Ill.; Mrs. J.H. Lent of New York, Mrs. J.H. Leffler of Attica, N. Y.; also twelve grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. RICHARDS - Mrs. Henry Axtell died at the home near Sullivanville Thursday at an advanced age. ROE - Cratsley, Hazel L. died on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at the Lakeland Regional Medical Center unexpectadly at the age of 72. Hazel was a longtime resident of the Elmira area before moving to Lakeland, FL sixteens years ago. Born here in Elmira, Hazel was the foster daughter of the Clarence and Minerva Miller Roe. She worked in food service most of her life. While in Florida, Hazel was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Lakeland, Fl. She enjoyed collecting porcelain dolls and time spent with family and friends. Surviving is her loving family; daughters, Linda (Jack Bishop) Cratsley and Rita Gleason, both of Elmira; a son Donald Cratsley of Lakeland, FL; along with their father, Edward (Jeanie) Cratsley of Pine City; brothers, Rodney (Nancy) Roe, Frank (Marilyn) Jago of Horseheads, Joe (June) Jago of AL; four grandchildren, Danny, Chris, Kayla and Clarissa; and many nieces and nephews. Hazel was predeceased by her sister Phyllis Roe; her son-in-law Merrill Gleason; and Hazel's grandson BJ Bishop. Family and friends will be received at Caywood's Funeral Home & Gardens, 1126 Broadway, Southport on Monday, February 17, 2003 from 12 to 2 p.m. Funeral services will follow the visitation in the Funeral Chapel at Caywood's (2 p.m.) with the Reverend Donald Rockwell officiating. Miss Maggie SHAFER
The death of Miss Maggie Shafer, a life long resident of the town of Erin,
occured at the Arnot-Ogden hospital in Elmira, Friday evening, December 11th,
after an extended illness. Practically all her life she had been a shut
in and invalid but bore her suffering cheerfully and always had a cheerful
smile for her friends and also love a joke. She was a woman of sterling
Christian character and although alone in the world, and without wordly means
and afflicted, she expressed faith in her heavenly Father's care, and would
tell her friends "that every one had a cross to bear and this was her
cross". She was the daughter of the late William and Carrie Smith
Shafer of Erin. The funeral was held Monday at 2 o'clock at the late
home; Rev. Clyde Rosekrans of Millport officiated. The bearers were S.
Louis Smith and John Roberts of Elmira and Samuel Roberts of Horseheads,
cousins of the deceased and Lee Bales of Cayuta. She is survived by
several aunts and cousins. Funeral director Shields of Horseheads had
charge of the funeral and burial was in the Van Duzer cemetery, Veteran.
John SHAFER, 54, of Sullivanville. Wednesday, Oct. 20, 1943, at 9 a.m. after a sudden heart attack. Survived by wife; sons, Pfc. Merle Shafer of North Africa, John Shafer Jr. of Elmira, Pvt. Harold Shafer of Camp Bowie, Tex.; daughter, Mrs. John Northrup of Sullivanville; brother Charles Shafer of Sullivanville; several nieces and nephews. Body is at the Gustin Funeral Home, Horseheads and will be removed Saturday afternnon to the family home. Funeral will be held Sunday, 2:30 p. m. at the Sullivanville Methodist Church. Erin- The death of Miss Maggie Shafer occured at an Elmira hospital Friday

SLOCUM - Mrs. Anna Slocum Daily, 77, of Sullivanville, died Monday, July 3, 1944, at 11 p.m. in an Elmira hospital. She is survived by a niece, Mrs. Minnie Lafferty of Elmira, and several cousins. The body is at the Van Buskirk funeral home where friends may call until 1 p.m. today, Thursday. The body will lie in state at the Sullivanville Methodist Church from that time until 2 p.m. when the funeral will be held, the Rev. Edgar L. Kinner of Breesport officiating. Edward SLOCUM died (September 17, 1930) at the family home in Pine City Wednesday at 12:30 a. m. He is survived by his widow; seven daughters, Mrs. Augusta Bessley, Mrs. Ethel Dethowff, Mrs. Iva Bessley, Mrs. Eloise McDuffey, Georgianna, Elizabeth and Frances Slocum; and four sons, Augustus, Albert, Leon and Leman.
