Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business. All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. MYERS Richard Myers
Mayor of Horseheads (1963-1965), a Southern Tier
businessman and award-winning Finger Lakes area artist, was a man for all
seasons and always quick with a joke. To say he lived a full-life is an
understatement. Richard was born June 12, 1916 in Horseheads to, William and
Lulu Myers, the middle of three children. He attended Horseheads High School
where he was captain of a championship basketball team, and then the Art
Institute of Chicago. Upon graduation from AIC, he set out west to "teach
Walt Disney how to draw". Unfortunately, Disney was not ready for Richard,
and so he returned to the Midwest and found commercial design work, first in
Detroit and then in South Bend, IN with Studebaker Automotive. He married his
high school sweetheart, Marian Bazzett in Indiana in 1939. He spoke fondly of
this time with Marian. They loved attending the crisp, fall Notre Dame football
games. During WWII, Richard served as head of the art department at the newly
constructed Pentagon. His team rendered enemy weaponry for training visualization
and rendered U.S. military concepts. After the war he and Marian returned to
Horseheads where Richard, his brother and brother-in-law took over Myers
Automotive, the family business. Marian and Richard bought a house on Watkins
Road where they raised their two sons: Garrett R. Myers and Jay Braden Myers.
Richard was an avid golfer and active member of the Elmira Country Club for
over three decades. In 1985, he retired and began painting voraciously,
establishing himself as a notable landscape artist, primarily of the Finger
Lakes. Richard's work has been featured in Central NY exhibits and galleries.
His award-winning canvases hang in many homes and regional public buildings.
Throughout his long life, Richard loved music, gardening, art, a cool beer and
good company. He is survived by his son, Garrett R. Myers of Grosse Pointe,
Michigan; his four grandchildren Jeffrey, Andrew, Katherine and Nicholas Myers;
and four great grandchildren. A burial service will be held at Maple Grove
Cemetery in Horseheads, Friday, March 16th at 1:30. A Celebration of Life
service will follow at Appleridge Senior Home from 2:30 - 4PM. The family
welcomes all friends and associates and asks that any gifts be directed to Arts
In Education, Arts Council of Southern Finger Lakes, 32 West Market St.
