Age 73 of Elmira, died May 14, 2012 after a long strong fight against cancer. Survived by wife of 41 years, Nancy E. Coolbaugh Simpson; sons, James (Heather Bill) E. Simpson III, Charles (Jennifer A.) A. Simpson Sr., James E. Simpson IV, Ryan M. Simpson; daughter, Edith (Michael Monteiro) N. N. He retired from Corning Inc. after 38 years of service. He was a dedicated employee and continued to work after retirement for O'Connors express and the Elmira City School district. Jim was a US Navy Veteran, avid hunter, fisherman and sportsman especially for the Buffalo Bills. James also was a Deacon and member of the Lake St. Presbyterian Church. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Kalec Funeral Home on Thursday, May 17th, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. His Funeral Service there on Friday, May 18th, at 11 a.m. Rev. SIUDA, Richard E. "Dick"
Age 84, born in Buffalo, NY on November 4, 1924 to Stanley and Martha (Bernas)
Siuda, and died Monday, February 02, 2009, at the Chemung County Nursing
Facility. Dick was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Mary Louise Hewitt, in
1994. He is survived by sons, Kevin E. (Darlyn), Elmira, John (Blanca), Pine
City, Richard M. (Katie), South Carolina; daughters, Maureen (Greg) Joslin,
Pine City, Mary Catherine Morris, Horseheads; 12 grandchildren, 8
great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins; brother-in-law,
Lawrence (Ann Marie) Hewitt of Scranton. Dick was a retired Letter Carrier at
USPS, a communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul's Church, Member & Former
Officer of N.A.L.C. Br 21, a member of Elmira Elks BPOE #62 for 55 years. Dick
was a graduate of E.F.A., Class of ´43; served his Country in the US Navy
during WWII in both the Atlantic and Pacific and survived the sinking of the
USS Murphy DD 603. Richard was a longtime resident of Elmira's Eastside, living
on East Avenue. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Kalec
Funeral Home Wednesday, February 4th, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. a prayer service
there at 9:15 a.m. Thursday followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.
in Sts. Peter & Paul's Church, Father Thomas O'Brien, Celebrant. Burial in
Forest Lawn Memorial Park at the convenience of the family. The family extends
their thanks to Mark Williams and the staff of Bartons Adult Home and a sincere
and heartfelt thanks to the professional and caring Staff of the Chemung County

MARIE VANDERPOOL, age 54 of Horseheads, NY formerly of Elmira, NY passed
away on Friday October 10, 2014 at Elcor Nursing Home. Ann Marie was born
September 28, 1960 in Binghamton, NY the daughter of the late Francis L. and
Anne Bartley Slater. She married her husband, Orin F. Vanderpool, who
pre-deceased her on March 10, 2000. Ann Marie was also pre-deceased by her
brothers and sisters. Ann Marie is survived by her son Orin J. Vanderpool of
Elmira, NY and daughter Beverly (Franklin ) Jager of Newfield, NY and her
children Richard, George, and Franklin Jr.; several aunts, uncles, nieces,
nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends . Relatives and friends are

Age 17 months, of Elmira, NY. He was born May 12, 2005 in Elmira, to Roberto R. Smith, Sr. and Melanie Kelley and died Sunday, October 22, 2006, unexpectedly at home. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Roberto "RJ" Smith, Jr.; sisters, Moniena Smith, Selena Kelley, and Olivia Haynes; maternal grandparents, James E. (Wilma Baker) Kelley, Jr. of Elmira, and Sharon M. Loving Sister Was born December 21, 1921 in Sayre, PA, the daughter of the late Marvin R. and Mildred E. (Jordan) Smith, died peacefully on Monday, June 12, 2006, at the Tioga Nursing Facility in Waverly, NY, at the age of 84. She is survived by her beloved sister and brother-in-law, Jeanne and Earl Titus of Elmira, NY; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family at the Tioga Nursing Facility. At her request there will be no calling hours. SMITH - JOHNSON, Jeannine D.
Age 78, of Elmira, NY, died peacefully at her home on Friday, April 18, 2008, from leukemia. Jeannine was born on May 23, 1929, daughter of the late Walter and Laberta Smith. Jeannine has been a member of the Elmira Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Survivors include her daughters, Diane (Kevin) Rix of Elmira, and Jeannine Wagner of Oregon; sons, Jeffrey Johnson and friend, Candy of Elmira, and Stephen (June) Johnson of Washington; grandchildren, Joshua and Kyle Carpenter, Jeff (Katie) Wagner, Jess, Jared and Rachel Johnson. Jeannine was predeceased by her husband, Carl Johnson in 2001; son-in-law, Charles Wagner. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at the convenience of the family. Mrs. Camp was born June 14, 1918 in Schenectady, NY the daughter of the late John Baptist Smith and Julia T. Lucey Smith. Jess married her husband, Gilbert N. Camp, who pre-deceased her on September 1, 1980. Jess and her late husband owned and operated Jess & Gil’s Restaurant in Elmira for several years. She was a communicant of St. Mary Our Mother Church in Horseheads, NY. Mrs. Camp is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gilbert N. Jr. “Chip” and Michele Camp of Huntersville, N.C.; daughter, Judy Stanton of Niagara Falls, NY; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; adopted daughter, Arlene (Edwin) Hess of Horseheads, NY. Age 64, of Elmira, NY, died Sunday, June 12, 2005, with his loving family by his side. Dick was born June 11, 1941 in Elmira, son of John and Frances (Gural) Smith. He married his wife, Gayle M. Davis on June 10, 1967. He retired from Anchor Glass after 39 years of service. Dick loved to hunt, fish, and camp on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, but most of all spending time with his family was his life. Dick served our country in the US Army during the Vietnam War, and was an active member with the American Legion Post# 154 in Elmira Heights. Survivors include his wife, Gayle, of 38 lovely years; daughter, Kathleen (Thomas) Collins of Elmira; sons, Timothy (Holly) of Kennendale, TX, and Jeffrey of Orlando, FL; mother, Frances Smith of Elmira; sister, Patricia Rice of Elmira; brother, John Smith of Elmira; nephews, David Rice, Jason Taylor and Michael Crawley; mother-in-law, Margaret Clarke of Elmira; sister-in-law, Barbara (Leonard) Grant of VA; brother-in-law, Richard Davis of AZ. SMITH United States Army Company E. 2nd Battalion35th Infantry Regiment
25th Infantry Division was born December 4, 1931, the son of the late Robert
C. and Gladys E. (Long) Smith. Following a fierce battle with Chinese forces
near the Korean border on November 28, 1950 in which American Troops were
forced to withdraw, CPL Smith was reported MIA. His record of death was
December 31, 1953. He had 5 siblings: Raymond L. (Nena) Smith of Dandridge,
TN; Virginia Davis, Robert Smith, James Smith and Louis Smith; along with
several nieces and nephews. CPL Smith's family wishes to invite all local
Military Service groups, Veterans, First Responders, EMT's, Law Enforcement
and the entire community to attend CPL William H. Smith's Graveside Services
on Monday, October 10, 2016 in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park atop Jerusalem
Hill, where his beloved mother is interred. Reverend Randy Jackson will

SMUTZINGER Robert Gunter Smutzinger
93, of Elmira, died peacefully early Sunday morning, October 7, 2012 at Bethany Manor. Born January 12, 1919 in Munson, PA, he was the youngest of eight children of the late Jacob and Ann Smutzinger. He is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Snyder Smutzinger of Elmira, NY; his daughter, Linda Smutzinger Peterson of Elmira; grandson, Brenton Geoffrey Peterson of Upper Marlboro, MD; granddaughter, Amy Kristina Peterson of Stockton, NJ; granddaughter, Gretchen Elizabeth Porier and her husband, Jonathan Porier with their daughter; his great-granddaughter, Ella Rose Porier of Tell City, IN; nieces, Barb Cacciotti of Elmira, Gwendolyn Pease of Bethlehem, PA, Shirley Hancock of Elmira; great-niece Beth Ann Cacciotti of Elmira, along with several additional nieces and nephews; his Beloved 1988 Buick Electra. He was a proud Marine Corps Veteran (1942-1945) of World War II serving with the Marine Air Casual Squadron 4 in the Pacific as an Aircraft Armorer from 1943-1944. After being released from active duty for WWII Bob and Eleanor moved back to Phillipsburg, PA where he opened his own sporting goods shop. He offered bicycle repair and gunsmith services. Their next move was to Elmira, NY to be closer to the family owned Seneca Lake property. Over the next few years Bob, Eleanor and the Snyder family worked to build the family cottage that remains today as Red Cedar Terrace. Bob went to work for Westinghouse Corporation after the move to Elmira, and retired from there, where he worked as a Maintenance Foreman, after 30 dedicated years of employment. Bob was a devoted father, husband, grandfather, and uncle to his family members. He had a passion for fishing and spending time at Red Cedar Terrace with his family. He also relished in his tinkering with his tractors, cars, and odd projects. He was always quick to help a person in need and worked tirelessly to provide a well maintained and cared for home for his family, as well as quality rental apartments. He took pride in his careful workmanship with his carpentry, lawn tending, and home repair projects. Bob had a saying for every occasion and a joke to light up everyone's face. A very special thank you to Bethany Manor Skill 3 for their tender loving care and their appreciation of Bob's sense of humor. SNYDER Barbara Ann "Aunt Barb"
Residing on Underwood Ave. died peacefully in her sleep Friday December 23, 2005. Born on March 16, 1932 in Elmira, Barbara was the daughter of Fred F. & Jennie Neily Snyder. She graduated from the 1950 class of EFA and attended Jean Summers Business School. Barbara was always a very independent person who was very devoted to her many interests which included golfing, sewing, gardening, arts, crafts, and homemaking. She retired from Corning Inc. in 1994 in a management position as a Domestic Transportation Analyst following 32 years of dedicated service. While there she earned several merit awards for outstanding job performance. Barbara enjoyed shopping and visited Wegmans Grocery Store daily. She was a well respected professional career women who was cherished by her surviving family. A sister, Virginia Herrick; three nephews, Mark Herrick, Mike (Kristie) Herrick all of Elmira; Kenneth (Julie) Reynolds, Youngstown, OH; three nieces, Jennifer Herrick, Elmira; Kathryn (Boris) Charlanow, Lowman; Susan (Bernie) Larose, Horseheads; nine great nieces and nephews, Ashley, Megan, Sophia and Olivia Herrick, Lara (Tom) Neiles, Yuri Charlanow, Ryan Larose, Carissa and Cara Reynolds; a close and loved friend, Kathleen Herrick, Elmira. Barbara was predeceased by her sister, Mary Reynolds in September of 2004. Barbara requested her services remain private with the Reverend Donald Hoff officiating. She will be buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Because of her love for animals her family requests all memorials be directed to the Chemung County SPCA in her memory.

Horseheads, NY died on Monday June 19, 2000. Mrs. Parsons was born March
9, 1926 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Glenn and Freida Miller Snyder.
Phyllis was pre-deceased by her husband, Alfred W. Parsons Jr., on September 9,
1984. She was also pre-deceased by several brothers and sisters. There will be
no prior calling hours. Private Funeral and Committal Services will be
conducted at the Van Buskirk-Lynch Funeral Home at the convenience of the
family. The Rev. Lorna McKendry will officiate. Interment in Forest Lawn
Memorial Park in Elmira, NY. The family will provide their own flowers and
those wishing may remember Mrs. Parsons through memorials to a charity of
one's choice. Mrs. Parsons is survived by her children: Pam Parsons & Jeff
Miles and Michelle Parsons who cared for her in her home, Jack Parsons,

"Betty"
Of Wellsburg, NY - Was born March 20, 1911 in Ward, West Virginia, the daughter
of the late Stephen Alex and Clara Elizabeth (Krozer) Somogyi, died peacefully
on Monday, July 13, 2009, at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 98. Her loving
husband, Frederick Covell Bigg predeceased her on November 2, 1990. She is
survived by her beloved son, Wayne T. Bigg; grandson, Wayne D. Bigg;
granddaughter, Kelly (Jeff) Tomaseski; great-grandsons, Ryan and Garrett Bigg;
brother, Hank (Dot) Somogyi; along with many relatives and friends. Family and

Age 68, of Elmira, died unexpectedly Friday, December 31,
2010. He is survived by his wife of 2 1/2 years, Starla (Klein) Sparling and
predeceased by his first wife of 37 years, Theresa Sparling. Bob has three
children, Robert (Barbara) Sparling of Pine City, Karalyn (Wade) Hill of San
Antonio, TX and Margaret (Bob) Green of Pine City and has two stepchildren, David
and Yolanda Klein. He is also survived by his brothers, Stewart Sparling, Jr.
of Albany, NY, Raymond Sparling, Sr. of Long Island, NY, Larry Sparling of DE,
Conrad John Sparling, Gary Sparling; and sister, Alice Buesker of Queens, NY.
He also has nine grandchildren, Stephanie Hill, Bobby Sparling, Mandy Macy,

great grandchildren. Bob was one of nine children and had a very special bond
with his youngest brother, Gary. Bob served his country in the United States
Army from 1959-1963 in Korea. Bob was a mechanic in the Elmira area for several
years including owning his own shop, Bob's Auto Repair. He was an active member
of the VFW Post 901 and the American Legion. He has held several positions
throughout the years. Bob enjoyed playing golf, playing Gumby slot machines at
the casinos and playing Jungle Gin on the computer. Bob was also an avid Dallas
Cowboys fan. He was proud of his vegetable garden, loved to laugh and made friends
wherever he went. Family and friends are invited to share their memories at

Juanita Bryant and Pauline Brewer; and a brother, Clairmont (Pete) Spencer.

Age 91 of Horseheads, NY formerly of Montour Falls, NY.
Juanita was born December 1, 1920 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Lloyd
and Alice Longwell Spencer. She married her husband Charles R. Bryan who
pre-deceased her on November 11, 1994. Juanita was also pre-deceased by her
sons Jack Kellogg, Richard Buchanan, and John Mann Sr. Juanita was a terrific cook
and waitress at several restaurants including The Wigwam in Montour Falls and
Tally-Ho Restaurant in Lowman, NY. Mrs. Bryan loved her family and friends and
treasured the time she spent with them especially her grandchildren. Juanita is
survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Glenda & James Dilly of Rochester,
NY; son and daughter-in-law: Theodore & Marie Mann of Springwater, NY;
step-son: Charles R. Bryan Jr. of Texas; sister: Pauline Brewer of
Willliamsport, PA; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of caring friends.

Lowman, NY died Sunday, February 8, 1998. He was a
United States Air Force veteran, worked for the Chemung County Department of
Social Services for 18 years and was a senior parole officer for the state of
New York for nine years in Ogdensburg, NY. He is survived by his wife of
27 years, Kathleen Spiak three sons and two grandchildren; mother, Gladys Spiak
of Lowman, NY; sister, Gladys (Robert) Hart of Beaver Dams, NY; brothers,
William (Lorraine) Spiak of Columbia Cross Roads, PA and Richard D. Spiak of
Elmira, NY; sisters, Mary (Merill Jr.) Morgan of Erin, NY, Roseanna (David)
Truesdale of Horseheads, NY; several nieces and nephews. John was
predeceased by his father, William B. Spiak. Funeral services were held
at the Olthof Funeral Home in Elmira on February 13 with Pastor Phillip Caruso
officiating and interment to be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery with full

SPIEGAL Vivian E. Freeman
Age 94, formerly of Casterline Rd., in town of Baldwin,
died on Monday, January 16, 2012 at the Bethany Manor in Horseheads, NY. Vivian
was born on August 4, 1917 in Toronto, Canada, daughter of the late Joseph and
Iva (Verbeck) Spiegal. Vivian spent her life as a homemaker; having raised her
own children and according to her count, cared for forty to fifty foster
children throughout her lifetime. In her limited spare time, she loved
gardening and her flowers. Often too, one might catch her reading on the deck
that overlooked her yard. Vivian is survived by her son, Curtis W. (Ann)
Freeman of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Darlene Freeman of Newton, Mass, Glenn
Freeman of Horseheads, Tammie Gayer and Greg Freeman, both of FL, Clint Freeman
of Elmira, Barbara Zajack of Middletown, CT, Kathy Perdigao of Sarasota, FL,
Eric Lawson of Chantilly, VA and Michael Lawson of Elmira; several great
grandchildren. Vivian was predeceased by her husband, Wilfred L. Freeman;
daughter, Barbara J. Lawson; sons, Noel J and Owen D. Freeman. It was Vivian's
wish that no services be held for her. Interment will take place in Forest Lawn

SPITTEL William Ray
William "Ray" William "Ray" Spittel, 70, of Honesdale, PA,
and formerly of Millerton, PA died Saturday, February 25, 2006, at Wayne
Woodlands Manor in Waymart. He was husband of the former Joyce M. Brundidge.
The couple would have celebrated their 50th anniversary this Aug. 24th. Born
July 15, 1935 in Catonsville, MD, he was the son of the late Mary Susan Edan.
He was retired after 38 years of employment from the former Moore Business
Forms. He then was employed at Wayne Memorial Hospital prior to his illness. He
was an avid die casts collector, mainly cars, trucks, and planes. He had a
collection over 5000 pieces. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and
grandfather. His grandchildren knew his as "Pop-Pop." Ray will be
remembered as a kind and gentle man. Surviving are three daughters and two
sons, Connie Hansen and husband, Mike of Archbald, PA, Mary Swendsen and
husband, Fred of Waymart, PA, Bethann Smith of Honesdale, PA, Mike Spittel and
wife, Beverly, Beach Lake, PA and Steve Spittel of Palmetto, FL. Also surviving
are 12 grandchildren, two sisters, Jackie Peterson and husband, Richard and
Sandy Reynolds; mother-in-law, Arline Brundidge; sister-in-law, Jane and
husband Mark Young; an uncle, Harold Baker and wife, Evelyn; one aunt, Evelyn
Insogna; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son,
Douglas Spittel who died June 17, 1979. The family will receive friends
Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hessling Funeral Home, 428 Main St.
Honesdale, PA. A memorial service will be held at Millerton Wesleyan Church on

STODDARD -HILA HUNSINGER, 92, Elmira Heights,
passed away on October 17, 2020. Hila was the daughter of the late Hiram and
Gertrude (Vose) Stoddard, of Wyalusing, PA. She married the late Richard
Hunsinger. She was predeceased by their son, Raulston (Carolyn Boecher)
Hunsinger. Their surviving daughters are Wanda (Leon) McGrain; Linda
(predeceased Randy) Little, and Pamela (Verne) Stage. Hila and Richard
enjoyed their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
Hila was predeceased by her brothers and sisters-In-Law: Martin (Dorothy)
Stoddard, Lahman (Darlene) Stoddard, and William (Rita) Stoddard all of
Wyalusing, PA. Hila is survived by her sister-in-law, Evalda Black. She is
predeceased by sister-in-law and brothers-in-law: Violet (Alvin) Diffenbach,
Frances (Gordon) Kingsley, Allegra (Jim) Giffen, Harry (Viola) Hunsinger,
Bert Hunsinger, Emily (Paul) Rohe, and William Black. Hila was a member of
the DAR. She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Horseheads,
NY. During her career, Hila was employed by Westinghouse and owned and
operated Hila’s Monogramming Service. She also owned and operated a sewing
business and was a talented seamstress who also did invisible reweaving.
During their retirement, Hila and Richard enjoyed camping at Alexandria Bay,
Demon Lake and wintering in LaBelle, FL. Hila enjoyed crafting, quilting and
painting beautiful pictures for her family. The family plans a private
service at Olthof Funeral Home. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial
Park, Elmira. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Hila in a

St. Joseph's School of Nursing and worked as a RN for many years, including at
Albany Medical Center. Kathleen is survived by her loving husband of 58 years,
Norman Hoppe; children, Debra (Perry), Susan, Sharon (Jamie), David and Jessica
(Lawrence); grandson, Corey; granddaughter, Ashley; mother, Helen Stansfield;

68, of Wellsburg, NY, died at his residence on Sunday, December 21, 2008. He
was the loving husband of the late Clara (Roupp) Stephenson who passed in May
of 1994. Gary was born on August 29, 1940 in Prospect, PA, son of the late
Alfred and Nettie (Kummer) Stephenson. Gary worked as a therapy aide for the
Elmira Psychiatric Center. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing. Gary
also collected coins, knives, and swords. Gary is survived by his son, Roy D.
(Claire) Stephenson of Wellsburg, NY; his daughters, Karen Stephenson and
fiancé, Carl Manoogian of Burlington, KY, Kay Roupp of Elmira, NY; his
grandchildren, Erin and Alfred Stephenson; and his companion, Margaret Chaffee
of Wellsburg, NY. Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Clara;

Steven was the owner of Steve's Body Shop for 36 years. He was very involved with the community and always available to those who needed his help. Hanson and Son. Howard served his country in the US Army National Guard from 1948 to 1956. Howard was a life member and very active as a volunteer fireman for 31 years in the South Creek Fire department. He was a life member of the MY Penn. Firemen’s Association where he also served as a delegate and past president. years, retiring in 1998. During his career, Welling served the Millport,
Wellsburg/ Lowman, Red Creek/ Westbury and Watertown First United Methodist
churches. Welling was predeceased by his wife, Helen; and son, Kevin. He was a
member of the Elks, Masons and Eastern Star. Welling is survived by daughters,
Helen (Lonny) Drake of Red Creek, NY and Denise Storch of Lakeland, FL; his
son, Welling P. (Cindy) of Phoenix, AZ; and grandchildren, Ryan and Brittany
Storch of Phoenix, AZ. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Elmira, NY at

Was born February 13, 1931 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Grant and Ethel (Horton) Storms Sr. went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on Sunday, February 24, 2013 surrounded by her loving family at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center. He was preceded in death by her father, Grant and step-mother, Winifred; brother, Robert Storms, sister, Marion Henderson, brother and sister-in-law, Grant and Judy Storms Jr. Her beloved children, Sherry Latterell Hayes and David Latterell also predeceased her. She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Ernest C. Bailey, on December 29, 1951 and he pre-deceased her on June 4, 2009. Ruth was

Sr. Formerly of Coldbrook Drive Was born March 11, 1928 in Waverly, NY, the son of the late Theodore D. and Adella (Smith) Swan, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, March 13, 2007, peacefully at the Chemung County Nursing Facility, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 79. Age 94, of Horseheads, formerly of Jerusalem Hill, Elmira, died Saturday,
November 13, 2010. Estelle Anna was born August, 28, 1916 to Stanley and Mary
Yop Swiderski Sr. in Garfield, NJ. She married August W. Hrasdzira September 19,
1936. They had five children. August died August 24, 1969 after 33 years of
marriage. On February 1, 1972 she married Charles Good who preceded her on June
24, 2003. They enjoyed 31 years of marriage. She was also preceded by
granddaughter, Christine Janeski of Elmira; brothers, Joseph, Andrew, Stanley,
Walter and Frank Swiderski of New Jersey; son-in-law, Brent Rodabaugh,
Horseheads; step daughter-in-law, Betty Lund; step sons, Charles and Donald
Good and Bud Luce. She enjoyed, camping, traveling, crocheting, knitting,
jigsaw puzzles, and word puzzles. She was a gifted seamstress and an avid
reader. Most of all she loved her family. Estelle worked at the Remington Rand
then Schweitzer Air Craft where she retired at age 62. She is survived by
children, Amy Rodabaugh, Horseheads, Roger (Ruth) Hrasdzira, Big Flats, Kenneth
Hrasdzira, Binghamton, NY, Karen (James) Janeski Jr., Carol Hrasdzira, both of

SYDNEY Milton B. Sydney
Age 83, of Main Street, Wellsburg, NY, died Thursday,
December 8, 2011 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Mr. Sydney, a beloved lifetime
resident of Wellsburg, served both the Village and the Town of Ashland
tirelessly. He began his life of service on the Chemung County Board of
Supervisors from 1960-1965. He went on to serve as a dedicated accountant for
Ingersoll Rand in Athens, PA. In 1987, he was appointed Deputy County Treasurer
for Chemung County and in 1987; he was elected to the position of County
Treasurer where he served until 2002. In the midst of his work life, Mr.
Sydney, who was an avid baseball fan, served as a coach for the Wellsburg
Little League and a key volunteer and local advocate within the Northern Tier
Little League. In this role, he influenced many young people, encouraging them
to work hard and inspired many to do their best. Mr. Sydney was a lifetime
member of the Wellsburg Volunteer Fire Department, serving as its Secretary for
many years. In addition, he was longtime member of the Kiwanis Club and active
in many major events in the community. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing
with family and friends. Mr. Sydney is survived by two nephews, Paul Sydney and
Steven Sydney and a niece, Carol Sydney Guy, two grand-nephews, Benjamin Guy
and Nathanael Guy and a grand-niece, Sarah Guy. Though he had no children of
his own, Mr. Sydney was an uncle and father figure to many and will long be
remembered for his warmth, kindness, and willing spirit. Family and friends are

Newman retired from Remington Rand after 32 years of dedicated service as a repairman. He loved people and would try to bring a smile to anyone who passed his way. He was known as the "unofficial mayor" of Elmira in this sleepy little town. Newman enjoyed going to rummage sales on his little red scooter. He was blessed with the gift of encouraging others and always being able to look on the bright side of everything. He was always thankful for all the good. A gathering of family and friends will take place on Wednesday, February 22, 2006, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Maranatha Bible Chapel, 774 Sing Sing Road, Horseheads, NY. Celebration services will follow the gathering at 1:00 p.m. His Pastor and friend, the Reverend William Wells, will celebrate Newman's life and honor his memory. Interment will follow in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Elmira, NY. Memorial donations may be directed to St. Joseph's Hospital, 555 East Market Street, Elmira, NY 14901, in his memory. Age 86 of Elmira, NY. He was born January 13, 1926 in Bath, NY, son of the late Raymond and Bessie (VanDelinder) Symonds and died Monday, September 10, 2012 at St. Joseph's Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Margaret; stepchildren Dennis (Amanda) Kirk of Elmira, Debra (Wayne) Davis of Grandville, WV, Kimberly (Bernard Lunduski) Burris of Pine City; brother Robert Symonds and sister Ruby (Owl) Johnson both of Springfield, MS; special nephew Jeffery (Mattie) Brown of Houston, TX; grandchildren Ethan Kirk and Zachary Hurd both of Elmira, Ashley Hurd of Painted Post, Christopher Burris of Elmira, Joshua Burris of Washington, DC and Benjamin Burris of Pine City; great grandson Ryan Hurd. Arthur was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII and retired from Ingersoll Rand with over 40 years of service. Family and friends are invited to visit Walter J. Kent Funeral Home, 858 Lake St. at Washington Ave., Elmira on Friday, September 14th from 5 to 7 pm. Age 63, of Elmira, NY, died on Saturday, January 16, 2010, at the Bath VA
Skilled Nursing Facility. He was born on July 6, 1946 in Elmira, NY to the late
George and Evalyn (Pennell) Symonds. George was predeceased by his brother,
John Symonds. Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Linda (Gilmore) Symonds
of Elmira; daughter, Christine (Mike) Morrison of Clarion, PA; grandchildren,
Jessica (Brayden) Turner of GA and Zachary (Aimee) Morrison of PA; brothers,
James (Margo) Symonds of Elmira and Richard Symonds of Elmira; sisters-in-law,
Gwendolyn Ripley and Judy Symonds, both of Elmira; brother-in-law, James
(Renee) Gilmore of East Aurora, NY; along with several nieces, nephews and
cousins. Mr. Symonds served our Country in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam
War and retired from Anchor Glass after many years of service. He was a
dedicated and baptized Jehovah's Witness since 1974. Family and friends are
invited to call on Wednesday, January 20th, from 12 to 1 p.m. at the Kingdom
Hall of the Jehovah's Witness, 706 Lena Place, Elmira. A Memorial Service will
follow there at 1 p.m., with Brother Stanley Young officiating. Interment will
take place in Forest Lawn Memorial Park at the convenience of the
family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Kingdom Hall
of the Jehovah's Witness. The family would like to thank the 2nd floor staff at
the Bath VA Skilled Nursing Facility and the 3B staff at the Bath VA Hospital

SZERSZEN FLORENCE (NAN) VANSCHOICK
Florence (Nan) Age 88, died peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2006, in the care of
Elcor Health Services in Horseheads, NY, following a lengthy illness. She was
born on April 11, 1918 in Blossburg, PA to the late Edward and Catherine
(Lazewski) Szerszen. Florence married Wayne L. VanSchoick in Elmira in July of
1951 and enjoyed 50 wonderful years together. She was a longtime member of the
Northside Community Evangelical Church and a member and educator at the
Sullivan Street Mission in Elmira. Florence cherished the time she spent with
her husband and with her family and friends. Survivors include her son, Rev.
Gerald VanSchoick Sr. of Elmira; sister, Teresa Webster of Elmira;
granddaughters, Laurie (Mike) Andrus of Elmira and Heather (Mohktar) Mehenni of
Astoria, NY; grandsons, Gerald (Deborah) VanSchoick Jr. of Myrtle Beach, SC,
Eddie Joe VanSchoick of Alberta, Canada, David (Anna) VanSchoick of Suffern,
NY, Michael and Matthew VanSchoick of Michigan; great-grandchildren, Kelly
(Jr.) Spivey (Grabowski) of Elmira Heights, Amy and Taylor VanSchoick of Myrtle
Beach, SC, Dustin and Holden Andrus of Elmira, Samantha, Christian, Micah and
Emily VanSchoick of Suffern, NY, Amina Mehenni of Astoria, NY;
great-great-granddaughters, Mariah Spivey and Brookelynn Grabowski of Elmira
Heights; many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. Florence was predeceased
by her husband, Wayne L. VanSchoick; granddaughter, Sharon Grabowski; sisters,
Amelia Casper, Maryanna Szerszen, Lenora Nixson, Martha Brusso, Frances Eames;
brothers, Joseph Szerszen, Stanley Szerszen and Aloysius (Al) Szerszen. Family
and friends are invited to attend a graveside service for Florence on Friday,
June 30th, at 10 a.m. in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
SZYBURA - LOUNSBURY, Irene M. nee: Szybura
Age 85, of the Chemung County Nursing Facility, Elmira, died Sunday, November
4th, 2007. She is survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and a
sister-in-law. Irene was a communicant of Sts. Peter & Paul's Church and
retired from St. Joseph's Hospital. The family will receive relatives and friends
at the Kalec Funeral Home, Thursday, November 8, at 9 a.m. followed by her
graveside committal prayers at 10 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
