Description: C:\TC\~srgp\new\bluehunt.jpg

Do You Know that you can search just the Obituaries on the site by using the three County Specific Obituary selections in the Partitioned search engine at the bottom of the Current What's New Page? You can narrow your search by including a key word in the cemetery name or a township name in addition to the surname you search. Then select the Find All Words option.
You'll also find obituary and other newspaper clippings using Clippings partition. Additional clippings can be found in the Birth, Marriage, and some other partitions.

Reading a series of obituaries from a single cemetery, as they are presented here, is like reading the multi-generational history of a community. These people were the local populace at a particular time. The people buried here knew each other, were neighbors, relatives and school mates. They attended church together and engaged in "trade" or business.

All people are listed in alphabetic order by surname at BIRTH. Women identified by a married alias only and  for whom a birth surname can not be identified, are listed on the last page for the cemetery's obituaries. Please send in typed obituaries for people buried in our local cemeteries. If possible include name of newspaper and date. Send typed in your email or in attached Word files. Send to Joyce M. Tice (JoyceTice@aol.com)

He came to live with Walter and Ella Williams Rockwell as a child.  The story I remember was that his family were neighbors and they both became seriously ill and asked them to take him if they didn't survive, which they apparently did not.  Later he lived with Blanche Rockwell Stanton.  He always bought us kids fire works for the 4th of July.  That celebration was the highlight of his year!  Don Stanton (May 2005)

BELL - Josephine C Bell (Mrs. Frederick W) Hovey -died at her home in Troy Friday evening, Dec 22, 1922, after an illness of four weeks. Josephine was born in Owego, NY, January 8, 1845. She was the youngest of a family of six children, four boys and two girls, of whom she was the last survivor. Her father, Joseph C Bell, died before she was born, and the care and training of the large family devolved entirely upon her mother, Mrs. Rebecca Campbell Bell, the later years of whose life were passed in the home of her daughter.  Mrs. Hovey’s education was obtained in the Owego academy, and in Miss Eastman’s private school. In the latter institution she specialized in the art department. Her marriage to Frederick W Hovey, the golden anniversary of which was celebrated three years ago took place in Owego September 28, 1869. A year and half later, in the spring of 1871, she and her husband removed to Troy, whish has ever since been their home. On coming to Troy Mrs. Hovey at once identified herself with the religious, social and educational interests of her adopted home. Having become a communicant member of the Presbyterian church of Owego in her girlhood, in company with her husband, immediately transferred her membership to the Presbyterian Church in Troy and became one of its most active and devoted members. As a member of the church choir, teacher in Sunday school, officer of the Woman’s Missionary Society, and in other positions, she was enthusiastic, consecrated and dependable. She was one of the charter members of the Christian Endeavor Society in her own church, was for many years teacher of a young men’s class in the Sunday School and manifested an active interest in the welfare of our public schools. Mrs. Hovey was one of the original members of the Ladies’ Progress Club, and of the Troy Book Club. She also took a deep interest in art exhibit at the Troy Fair, and much of the success of this department for many years was due to her efforts. She was an officer of the Woman’s Missionary Society of Lackawa Presbytery for a time, was the first Bradford County secretary of the Children’s Aid Society of Philadelphia, and was the first in this region to direct and supervise the vacation trips of poor children from New York and Philadelphia. The poor and the sick always found in her a friend and helper. Her husband and three children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. The children are Albert F Hovey, of Pittsburgh, Theodore C Hovey of New York, and Ethel B Hovey of Troy.

Chosen from time to time to serve in various official positions in the activities of the church she discharged all obligations with marked fidelity and efficiency. As a member of the church choir, teacher in the Sunday School, officer of the Woman’s Missionary Society, and in other positions, she was enthusiastic, consecrated, and dependable. She loved her own church, but not exclusively, and was always ready to co-operate with other congregations in efforts for the religious uplift of the community. She retained through life her sympathy with young people. She was one of the charter members of the Christian Endeavor Society in her own church, was for many years teacher of a young men’s class in the Sunday School, and manifested an active interest in the welfare of our public schools. Mrs. Hovey was one of the original members of the Ladies’ Progress Club, and of the Troy Book Club. She also took a deep interest in art exhibit at the Troy Fair, and much of the success of this department for many years was due to her efforts. Interests outside of her own community also claimed her attention. She was an officer of the Woman’s Missionary Society of Lackawanna Presbytery for a time, was the first Bradford County Secretary of the Children’s Aid Society of Philadelphia, and was the first in this region to direct and supervise the vacation trips of poor children from New York and Philadelphia. The poor and the sick always found in her a friend and helper. Gifted with qualities of leadership, social and sympathetic by nature, ready and forceful in expressing her thought, with energy limited only by her physical strength, and willing always to take her full share of every burden, she lived a cheerful and helpful life and will be greatly missed. Her cheerful humor often found expression through her ready pen, and some of her social experiences and events in the lives of her friends, were commemorated in breezy verse. So too, occasionally, the deeper experiences and desires of her heart found poetic expression. One such poem entitled “The School of Christ,” was read at the funeral service. He husband and three children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother. The children are Albert F. Hovey of Pittsburgh, Theodore C. Hovey of New York, and Ethel B. Hovey of Troy. Morse. Three of the bearers were former members of her Sunday school class. Thomas W. Parsons, P.S. King and B.B. Mitchell. The others were William Weigester, H.K. Mitchell and W.W. Beauan. The interment was in Glenwood cemetery.  Troy Gazette Register, December 28, 1922
