ELMIRA SENDS MANY FOR ARMY AND NAVY
Sixteen Left Last Night for Fort Slocum, Eight Leave This Morning for
Buffalo and Twelve More Will Depart Monday.
Sixteen young men who were recruited at the
local army office during the past week were sent, at 11:03 over the Erie
last night, to Fort Slocum.
The following young men enlisted in the Infantry:
John Kaiser, Breesport; Joseph D. Woodruff, Penn Yan; Edward Bostwick,
605 John Street; William Mowcher, 139 McCauley avenue; Claude L. Howe,
403 West Second street; Clarence Bidler, Montour Falls; Arlio Tenny, Horseheads;
Earl DeGabrielle 921 Lake street.
Robert Johnson, of Corning, enlisted in the
Signal Corps and August B. Tinke, of the same city, in the Field Artillery,
along with Jacob Rohde and H. R. Sincoe, of Elmira, and Fay C. Lovejoy,
of Corning.
George Nichols, of Addison, William J. Strong,
of Wellsburg, Pa., and Geroge Kruckon, of 560 Beach street, all joined
the Coast Artillery.
From the Army recruiting offices men are only
sent to Fort Slocum on Thursday of each week.
Eight men are to be sent to Buffalo from the
local Navy recruiting station this morning. They are Wilbur E. Delmore,
of 105 Pennsylvania avenue; Clarence W. Jones, 60 Hart street; Levi P.
Morton Green, 114 West First street; Charles F. Allen, Hals Corners; Clifford
I. Ford, Wellsboro, Pa.; William McKinley Andry, Grass Flats, Pa.; Frank
J. Cole, Covington, Pa., and Harry D. Preston, of 124 Gridley place.
At present there are twelve men listed to be
forwarded on Monday. They are Walter Howard, Hornell; Willis Reed,
Owasco, N. Y.; Lewis Sandborne, jr.; 321 West Washington avenue; Fred M.
Tinker, Watkins; Carl J. Hyde Moutour Falls; John M. Fordham, Watkins;
Bernard M. Callett, New York City; Dinnis Tormey, jr,; Corning; William
H. Lnch, Montour Falls; Irland L. Harris, Big Flats; Howard E. Councilman,
Pittston, Pa,. And Harry C. Crist of Corning.
No men were sent yesterday and none are sent
on Saturdays. It is expected that the number to be forwarded on Monday
will be greatly increased during today and Saturday.
FOR COLORED REGIMENTS.
At the local Army recruiting office in the
post office building a request was esterday [yesterday?] received
to make a special effort to enlist able bodied colored to strengthen four
colored regiments. It is expected that during the next week a large
number of Southern Tier colored boys will respond to the call and depart
with next week¹s crew going to Fort Slocum.
