Bakers Married 64 Years; He shot Prowling Bear at 89
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Baker planned to celebrate their 64th wedding anniversary quietly at home Wednesday, but one never knows what excitement will develop around the Baker’s house. Late one night last July, they heard a noise outside their summer home at Baldwin Run near Wellsboro Junction. They look out and found a large black bear tearing apart Mr. Baker’s bee hives and eating the honey. Mr. Baker, then 89, killed the bear with one shot. He received $46 in damage from the State Game Commission for the destroyed bees. The Bakers spent their anniversary at their winter home at 28 W. Water St., Wellsboro. They remember well their wedding day 64 years ago. It was a warm, spring-like day with no snow on the ground when they boarded the New York Central passenger train at Stokesdale, now called Wellsboro Junction, for the trip to Lawrenceville where they were married. They recall that no license was necessary at that time, nor was there any age limit for a bride and groom. They also remember the old-fashioned “horning bees” where shotguns and sometimes even dynamite were used to “serenade” the couple’s first night of marriage. At 90, Mr. Baker still is very active and takes long walks whenever the weather permits. He spent most of his life hunting and trapping foxes, wildcats and raccoons during the winter. He also worked as an attendant of the New York Central Railroad water pump station at Stokesdale Junction. Mrs. Baker is 80. Her lifelong hobby has been making quilts and hooked rugs which she gives to friends and neighbors. The couple had one daughter, now deceased.
