Swan-Purple
A very happy company of people gathered at the residence of Mr. and
Mrs. E. J. Purple, on Charleston street in this borough, last Wednesday,
to witness the marriage of Miss Flora M. Purple and Mr. David Z. Swan.
Soon after the guests had assembled the ceremony was proceeded with, the
bride and groom being supported on either hand by their respective parents.
Rev. Dr. Shaw, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, tied the nuptial knot
after a brief and well considered address pertinent to the occasion.
For the special benefit of our feminine readers we will say that the bride
was most becomingly clad in cream colored cashmere trimmed with plush of
a lighter shade. After the happy couple had received the congratulations
of their friends the whole company sat down to an excellent wedding feast,
and in due time the young husband and wife started on their wedding journey
amidst a shower of rice and good wishes. They expect to visit New
York city and Columbia, Lancaster county, before their return. There
were numerous beautiful and useful presents displayed at the wedding, among
which were a full set of handsome dishes presented by the Trustees of the
Presbyterian Church, a deed of a house and lot in this borough executed
by the bride’s parents and an encyclopedia in 15 volumes given by the groom’s
father. It was evident that the young couple had the hearty good
wishes of all who were present and of many relatives and friends who found
it impossible to attend. And they certainly deserve abundant prosperity
and happiness. At the residence of the bride’s parents, in Wellsboro,
Pa., March 2, 1887, by Rev. A. C. Shaw, D. D., Mr. David Z. Swan and Miss

S. H. Moon pronounced the ceremony. The bride wore white silk trimmed
with duchess lace and pearls, and a tulle veil with lilies of the valley.
She also carried a bouquet of rosebuds and lilies of the valley.
The only ornaments were diamonds. The presents were numerous and
very elegant. There were a large number of guests present from a
distance. Mr. and Mrs. Grier will make an extensive trip through

Yesterday at noon a small company of relatives and intimate friends
witnessed the wedding of Miss Hattie M. Willis and Mr. Jesse M. Robinson,
at the home of the bride’s mother, Mrs. C. D. Willis, on West avenue in
this borough. Revs. L. R. Dalrymple, of Reading, and W. G. Ware,
of St. Paul’s Church, performed the ceremony. The bride and groom
stood in the recess of a bay-window under a beautiful floral wish-bone
made of roses, forget-me-nots and smilax. The bride was attired very
becomingly in ivory-white silk with a bridal veil and diamonds, and she
carried a handsome bouquet of white roses. Hon. Horace B. Packer
was the best man and Miss Grace Willis, the bride’s sister, was the maid
of honor. Her dress was a handsome pink China silk. The house
was brilliantly lighted, and the perfume of rare flowers filled the air.
During the two hours of the reception a gay throng of well-wishers assembled
to congratulate the young people who were the central figures and to wish
them a safe and happy bridal journey. Many guests were present from
out of town, among whom were Mr. and Mrs. W. V. Emery, of Bellefonte, Mrs.
Knapp and her son, Mr. A. Knapp, of Williamsport, Misses Grace and Kittie
Cobb, of Philadelphia, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. R. Dickinson, of Sparta, Wis.,
and Miss Lucy Baldwin, of Lawrenceville, all former residents of this borough.
There were many handsome presents from relatives and intimate friends of
the family, including a solid silver service. An Elmira caterer had
charge of the refreshment tables, which were laden with the choicest viands,
and the serving was done by experienced waiters. At five o’clock
the bridal party left by special train for New York city. Mr. and
Mrs. Robinson will embark tomorrow morning on the steamer Celtic for an
extended tour in England, France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Austria,
