Notices

1883 - Wellsboro Agitator
Golden Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Cameron
Correspondence of the Agitator.  Osceola, January 5, 1883.--The 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Cameron, of this place, was celebrated at their residence on the 1st instant.  The day was all that could be desired and the roads were in splendid condition.  Fifty persons were present, including all the children now living, 10 in number.  All of them have been married, and the families of all were present with two unavoidable exceptions. Mr. Charles D. Cameron was born at Elmira, then Newtown, NY, in 1811, and he lived there till about the time of his marriage in 1833.  Mrs. Lucretia Cameron--her maiden name was Weeks--was born in Vermont in 1813.  Her parents moved to near Westfield, Pa., in the early settlement of the country, and for years her father had to carry his grist to Painted Post, NY, to have it ground, taking three or four days for the round trip.  At that time Elder Sheardown, an early pioneer minister of the Gospel, preached in the Cowanesque valley and was well known by the family.  There were few settlers along the valley, and they were subjected to all the privations of frontier life.  After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Cameron lived in Osceola (then Elkland township), Westfield and Clymer till 1857, since which time they have lived in Osceola.  At the time of the great flood in September, 1861, Mr. Cameron’s house and all his effects were washed away, the family barely escaping with their lives.  Twelve children were the fruit of this marriage, one of whom, the first born, died in infancy.  Another, Carrie H., after arriving at womanhood met with a terrible death by being burned, July 7, 1880, at Hornellsville, NY, by the explosion of a kerosene oil stove which she had used for years. Of the children, there were present at this anniversary Hiram B. Cameron, now living at White Cloud, Mich., his wife and three children; Mrs. Cornelia Dilcer, of Pittston, Pa., and one child; Charles K. Cameron, living in the town of Tuscarora, Steuben county, NY, his wife and three children; Mrs. Lucretia Hollis, widow of Geo. H. Hollis, deceased, now living at Buffalo, NY; Mrs. Mary L. and her husband O. S. Kimball, of Osceola, and two children; James D. Cameron, wife and two children, now living near Addison, NY; Mrs. Bessie E. and her husband M. G. Hinckley, of Elmira, NY; Mrs. Lucy Rice and her husband Rev. F. F. Rice, and two children, living at Havana, NY; Mrs. Jennie McKay and two children, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; Mrs. Emma A. and her husband Geo. H. Hobart, and one child, of Newaygo, Mich.  The eldest of these 10 children is 48 years old and the youngest 24 years of age, and a finer looking family of seven sisters are very rarely found.  All of this large family are well married and doing well.  They are highly respected in their respective places of residence, and show the result of careful training while young, and are a great source of comfort to their parents in the sunset years of life.  There were also present Mr. and Mrs. Dyer Weeks, of Westfield, a brother of Mrs. Cameron; Mrs. Sally Guernsey, of Knoxville, a sister of Mrs. Cameron, with other near relatives and friends of the family. Rev. F. F. Rice, of Havana, NY, was master of the ceremonies, and performed a most beautiful service so changed from the marriage ceremony of the Church of England as to be most appropriate to the occasion, and the marriage vows were renewed, the eldest son Hiram acting as groomsman and the eldest daughter, Cornelia as bridesmaid while the company all remained standing.  Then came the congratulations of all present, after which the company sat down to the table already groaning with a feast that would tempt the appetite of a king, and the plates were loaded with one delicacy after another till each guest, completely overcome, gave up the conflict and retired to the parlor.  Many fine presents were brought as tokens of remembrance of the occasion, among them being 87 dollars in gold.  During the evening many of the neighbors and friends in the village came in to offer their congratulations, and were served with refreshments. One after another the children and their families are returning to their scattered homes with the sad thought that never again in this life will the whole family be gathered under the home roof.  Very seldom indeed does such a large family live to see the golden wedding of their parents.  May father and mother, sons and daughters and grandchildren finally be gathered in that home eternal where naught can cause a sigh or a sorrow and where separation can never come.  Now and then.  (Tuesday, January 9, 1883, The Wellsboro Agitator, Wellsboro, Tioga Co, Pa.)
