1880 - Wellsboro Agitator
Golden Wedding Anniversary

Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Bowen
An interesting event near Knoxville--the 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. B. S. Bowen.  Correspondence of the Agitator.  Knoxville, January 16, 1880.--Last Wednesday evening, January 14, 1880, in the vicinity of Knoxville, Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin S. Bowen celebrated the 50th anniversary of their marriage life.  And of its kind this was one of the most pleasant and successful occasions we ever attended.  The invitations extended could only anticipate the presence of some of the nearest relatives; but this even meant a very large attendance.  But circumstances did not permit the attendance of all the parties invited.  Of the 10 living children, six only were present--three sons and three daughters.--Mrs. Ray, Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Heggie and Messrs. George, Frank and Emmer Bowen.  The rest were in the far West--John in Dakota, Samuel in California, Ezra in Montana, William in Nebraska.  But the brothers and sisters, the children and grandchildren, together with more remote relatives, swelled the number present to a large company. A quartet, and the Knoxville Brass Band and the “Whistling Nightingale,” furnished an abundance of music appropriate for the occasion.  Of course an anniversary of this character would be incomplete without the convivial element.  So that nothing might be lacking, due attention was paid to this part of the ceremony.  After the offering of the invocation by Rev. J. O. Jarman, all gladly partook of “what was set before them; asking no questions for conscience’s sake.”  Of the many tables set, one in particular deserves a passing remark; not so much on account of what it had thereon as on account of the company surrounding it.  At this table the bride and the bridegroom of 50 years ago were seated, together with a dozen of their associates, 14 in all, their united ages making an aggregate of 989 years, or averaging over 71 years.  But we can not fail to think of the wonderful changes their 50 years have wrought; how the almond trees have flourished meanwhile!  The company, then averaging 21 years, now have passed their three-score and 10; then full of life and vitality, now animation is gradually ebbing; then full of hopes and brilliant anticipations, now the setting sun is sinking fast.  And the only hope worth cherishing now is the hope of a blissful immortality. After the physical nature had been refreshed, then the emotional and the intellectual received due attention.  The best wine was reserved for the last of the feast.  Dr. J. C. Whitaker, of Elkland, brother to Mrs. Bowen, made a congratulatory speech, in which he begged permission to indulge himself in alluding a little to the circumstances of 50 years ago when he first came into the Cowanesque valley, which then appeared almost in its native wildness; when the chief occupants were the tall pines, the sturdy oak, the panther and the bear; when there were only six frame houses in all the valley from Lawrenceville to Knoxville; when Elkland and Osceola peacefully slumbered in the tranquil bosom of nonentity.  He then alluded to his first acquaintance with Mr. B. S. Bowen and to that gentleman’s marriage to his (the speaker’s) sister on the 14th of January, 1830.  The Doctor said on account of the part take by himself to bring about the consummation of this matrimonial relation he had abundant reason to be particularly interested on this occasion, and he hoped that neither his sister nor Mr. Bowen had ever been sorry on account of the service rendered them in this particular.  Addressing them more particularly, he said:  You have shared each other’s joys and sorrows; you have had prosperity and you have had adversity. Then appealing to the company present, he affirmed that kindness and hospitality always characterized the family, for which they shall have an abundant reward in the recompense of the righteous.  Then in a pathetic and characteristic manner the Doctor closed his remarks by alluding to Psalm, xxxvii, 37.-- “Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace.”  Dr. J. H. Haggie, of Osceola, read several letters and papers written for the occasion, and also made the presentation of gifts--a most elegant family Bible and a photograph album of the same description, and an old-fashioned purse with something therein that chinked as it passed from hand to hand; telling the story of a golden wedding.  Space will not permit the mention of all the presents in detail.  May the rest of Mr. and Mrs. Bowen’s life be of a golden hue!  Observer.  (Tuesday, January 20, 1880, The Wellsboro Agitator, Wellsboro, Tioga Co, Pa.)
