White-Stone
A large company of ladies and gentlemen gathered at the residence of Mrs. S.
B. White, in this village, last Thursday afternoon to witness the marriage
ceremony that was to link the fates and fortunes of Miss Lillie White, of
Wellsboro, and William A. Stone, Esq., lately of this village and now of
Pittsburgh. The occasion was a most interesting one. The contracting
parties made their appearance at the appointed time unaccompanied by bridesmaids
or other attendants. The impressive marriage service of the Episcopal
Church was pronounced by Rev. Dr. Breck, Rector of St. Paul’s Church, the bride
being given “to this man” by her uncle, Laugher Bache, Esq. If we knew
what sort of a dress the bride wore we would describe it for the benefit of our
fair readers; but as we have very slight knowledge on that subject, we can only
say she was most becomingly dressed and looked beautiful--as all brides should.
The house was tastefully decorated with plants and cut flowers; the table, laden
with a profusion of the delicacies of the season, was a most appetizing marvel
of beauty, and the multitude of rich and costly presents displayed were enough
to excite the envy of every spinster present. Among the wedding gifts a
very handsome silver tea-set, presented by the members of the bar of this
village, was conspicuous, and was a most graceful reminder of the fact that the
bride was a daughter of the late Judge White and the happy groom was lately a
practicing attorney in Wellsboro. The newly married couple left on the
evening train for their future home in Pittsburgh, followed by the good wishes
of hosts of friends. It is safe to say that every guest present will long
remember the event as a pleasant and most suspicious wedding party. May it
prove the first step in a long wedded life of happiness and prosperity for Mr.
and Mrs. William A. Stone! (Tuesday, October 8, 1878, The Wellsboro
