SNYDER
John Snyder first appears on the 1830 assessment list of Wells, enumerated 1830 census of Wells, age 40 and under age 50 with a wife and young daughter. On the 1834 assessment list of Wells he is listed as “removed.” John Snyder again appears on the 1838 assessment list. On the 1839 list he was a non resident and does not appear on the 1840 assessment list.
Jacob Snyder first appears on the 1833 assessment list of Wells. On the 1837 list he transfered his interests and removed from the township.
SOUTHWORTH
The names of William and Barbara Southworth, Silas and Phila Southworth, and Sylvanus Southworth appear on the 1783 membership list of the First Baptist Church of Wantage, Sussex County, New Jersey. Later, the names of Joseph and James Southworth. On the 1797 list of the same church appears Elder Silas and Phila Southworth, Sylvanus Southworth.
Lois Southworth was a member of the Baptist Church of Chemung located at Wellsburg, Chemung County, New York. Lois wife of Sylvanus Southworth d. 8 June 1829 71y (ts) Coryland Cemetery. An entry in the church record between 5 June and 1 Aug 1829 states “Lois Southard deceased.” Her Will dated 22 Mar 1828 Southport, Tioga (that portion that is now Chemung) County, New York named daughter, Mehetable Garner and her children, Charlotte, Julia, Abigail, and Lois; daughter, Elizabeth Hazen; granddaughters, Sally Corwin and Lois T. Cooley; great grandson, Isaac T. Corwin. Executors, Increase Cooley and Mehetable Garner. Witnessed by Silvenus T. Snell, and Jesse Hallack. Proved 27 Oct 1829.

John Pierson Strong b. 9 May 1787 New York state son of John Strong and Susan Pierson m. 28 Dec 1811 Ann Burt b. 11 Apr 1795 Warwick, Orange County, New York daughter of Belden Burt and Sarah Hathorn. John was a carpenter and joiner, resided several localities in New York, including Bridgehampton, Long Island and Orange County. In 1818 purchased land at Great Bend, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania where he erected a sawmill, grist mill and carding machine. The family then removed to Smethport, McKean County, Pennsylvania and in 1828 to Wells. They settled in central Wells at Judson Hill. John first appears on the 1829 assessment list. John received a patent on 16 Dec 1831 for 400 acres of previously vacant land that was surveyed 30 Aug 1831. This was a rectangular tract east of the Seeley Creek Valley at or near Bald Hill, extending from the state line south through present Farm View Road. John received another patent of 336 acres on 27 Sept 1832 that had been surveyed 25 Aug 1832 and this was in the northwest quadrangle of Wells. There is no indication that the family resided on either tract. John acquired considerable wealth, d. 23 Jan 1855 67y 10m 13d (ts). Will of John (Bradford County probate 996) requested “body be interred in the burying ground at French Mills” which later became Mosherville. Wife, Ann, choice of horses, one good buggy wagon, harness, two good cows, wearing apparel and jewelry, 1/3 of farm of 300 acres; children, James P., Belden B., Thomas A., George W., Mary Ann; grandchildren, Thomas H. DIED. STRONG – In Wells, Pa., Oct 7th of old age, Mrs. Ann Strong, aged 86 years. Born in Orange Co., N.Y., came to Pennsylvania 62 years ago, was a member of the Protestant Methodist church over fifty years. She was the mother of eleven children among whom are J. P. Strong of Columbia X Rds (The Northern Tier Gazette, Troy, Pennsylvania, Thursday, October 13, 1881).

Jonathan Sturdevant b. 4 Feb 1760 Fredericksburg, Dutchess County, New York, served in the American Revolution (pension file W2675) in a Company commanded by Captain Townsend of the Regiment commanded by Colonel Graham, New York line. In 1795 member of Kent and Fishkill Baptist Church at Farmer’s Mills in what is now Putnam County. He preached with such fervor and success that his ordination was unanimously called for. A man of “sterling integrity, zealous of the cause of Christ, strict in discipline, and beloved of the church (History of the Seneca Baptist Association). He became pastor and labored until April 3d, 1802, with much success; then the church, failing to raise the money promised him, voted to discharge him from the pastorship, giving him an opportunity to labor in another field. He still continued to preach some part of the time until November 7th, 1807, a period of twelve years (History of Putnam County, New York). Enumerated in Dutchess County, New York in 1800 with one male under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-90), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1775-84), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74), one male over age forty five (b. before 1755), one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-1774) and two females over age forty five (b. before 1755). Mortgage dated 29 Apr 1809 Dutchess County (Liber 13:495) named wife Elizabeth. Jonathan was a Baptist minister and preached the first sermon of the Second Baptist Church of Hector. Jonathan m. 3 Feb 1824 in Hector (2)Pegga Ann Thorne, b. 1780, widow of Benjamin Crandall who is related to have d. 23 Aug 1816 Hector by whom she had eight children. Pegga was enumerated in Hector in 1820. Jonathan was enumerated in the 1825 state census of Hector with four males and four females in the household, one of the females married and under the age of forty five, one of the females unmarried and over age sixteen and under age forty five, and two females unmarried and under age sixteen. These were children of Peggy’s first marriage in the household. Jonathan was enumerated in Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1830 with two males under age five (b. 1826-30), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1801-10), one male of age sixty and under age seventy (b. 1761-70), one female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). Jonathan first appears on the 1832 assessment list (compiled fall of 1831) of Wells Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania and is distinguished from his son Jonathan who is refered to as Jonathan Jr., and who was also in Wells. On 4 Sept 1832 Jonathan appeared at a court in Elmira, New York, aged 71 years, 4th of February last, made the following declaration in order to obtain a pension: That on or about the 15 Mar 1788 he enlisted for nine months in the company of Captain Elijah Townsend in Colonel Grayham’s regiment, served the term and was discharged about the middle of December following. In the spring of the next year, 1779, he enlisted in the same regiment for nine months but in the company of Captain William Caulkins, served said term and was discharged the forepart of the winter following. In the spring of 1780 he enlisted for another term of nine months. He further stated he was born in the town of Fredericksburg in the County of Dutchess and State of New York on 4 Feb 1761 that he has a record of his age in his bible that when he enlisted he resided in the place of his nativity. After the war he lived there until about the year 1810 when he moved to Seneca County about 25 miles north of his present residence where he lived a short time when he moved to the north part of Elmira, his present residence. On 24 Apr 1833 Elijah Sturtevant of Catlin in Tioga County (that portion that became Chemung County), aged 67 years the 2nd day of next month stated that at the commencement of the Revolution he resided in Fredericksburg with his parents and continued to live there and that his brother Jonathan, who is an applicant for a pension, served under two enlistments. Signed Elijah Sturdivent. Jonathan was inscribed on the roll of New York at $80 per year to commence 1 Nov 1833 with arrears of $240 to 4 Mar 1831. On the 1834 assessment list of Wells (compiled fall of 1833) Jonathan had transferred his real estate to Aaron Bryant. On the 1835, 1836, and 1837 assessment lists, Jonathan had a sawmill. Jonathan does not appear in Wells after the 1837 assessment list. Jonathan removed to Elmira, New York where he continued to minister. Jonathan was an 1840 pensioner (census), age 79, in Elmira, New York engaged in manufacturing/trade with one female of age fifty and under age sixty enumerated in the household. Will of Jonathan dated 10 Feb 1841 Elmira probated 26 Mar 1841 named wife Peggy Ann and brother Elijah. Jonathan d. 3 Mar 1841 81y 1m 1d (pension and ts) Horseheads, buried Maple Grove Cemetery, Horseheads, New York. His brother Elijah resided Catlin, Chemung County, New York. Peggy was enumerated in Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1850, age 68, residing with a daughter and grandchildren. On 4 Aug 1853 Pegga Ann Sturtevant, aged 72 of Elmira, appeared in Chemung County court for the benefit of a pension, and stated: widow of Jonathan Sturtevant, that they were married 3 Feb 1824 in the town of Hector, Tompkins County (that portion that became Schuyler County) by Elder King a minister of the gospel and that before her marriage her name was Pegga Ann Crandell, and that her husband died in the town of Elmira 8 Mar 1841. Pegga signed by mark. On 4 Aug 1853, Amanda Parker, aged 50 years, resident of Elmira, appeared in court and stated she was a daughter of Pegga by her first marriage to Benjamin Crandell and that Jonathan died 8 Mar 1841. On the same date Archibald Crandell, aged 49 years, resident of Elmira, also appeared and stated son of Pegga and her first husband Benjamin Crandell and that Jonathan died 8 Mar 1841. “Pegga Ann Sturtevant” was inscribed on the roll at the rate of $80 per year to commence 3 Feb 1853 certifificate of pension issued 10 Oct 1853. On 31 Mar 1855 Pegga appeared at a court in Chemung County, aged 74 years, resident of Horseheads, that she was married in 1822 or 1823to Jonathan Sturtevant, that he died 6 Mar 1841 town of Horseheads then Elmira, and makes application for bounty land. She signed by mark. Archi L. Crandell and Betsey Crandell appeared and he testified that he was present at marriage of Pegga and that he was present at death of Jonathan Sturtevant 6 Mar 1841. Jesse Sturdevant died quite suddently of heart disease at his home near Job's Corners in this township last Saturday evening. He was taken sick while sitting at the super table and expired almost immediately. Mr. Sturdevant was a veteran soldier and a member of Deming Post, G.A.R. of this village. He was in town a few days before his death and seemed to be enjoying his usual health. He was a brother of Wm. B. and Thos. B. Sturdevant, former residents of this village and A. B. Sturdevant of Elmira (Millerton Advocate obituary).

James Sturdivant died at his home on Judson Hill, Wells township, April 26th, from effects of a parylitic stroke. He was born in Rutland township, Tioga county, in 1841, was a resident of this place for thirty years, and was mail carrier between Edsalville and Snedikers twenty years. He enlisted in the formation of the 12th regiment, Pennsylvania Reserves, served three years; and was honorably discharged with his Company. He served in over thirty engagements. Mr. Sturdivant was an upright, honorable citizen, an affectionate and kind father, and is survived by his wife and one son, Leon, of this place. The funeral was held on Sunday, April 29th, at Judson Hill M. E. church. The members of the G.A.R. were present in a body. There were many beautiful flora offering (Troy Gazette Register, May 2, 1900).

Ben Sturdevant, who was killed at Lawrenceville by the cars Monday afternoon, was an old-time resident of this village, and the news of his violent death was a shock to the community. But little is at present known as to the cause of the accident, but it is understood that in an attempt to board a moving train he was thrown under the wheels (Millerton Advocate obituary).

Mrs. Sabrina Smith died Friday afternoon at 5:25 o'clock at the family home on the Bird Creek road in Wells Township, Pa., aged eighty-nine years. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Carrie Eaton, Mrs. John Balmer, Miss Anna Smith, all of Pine City; Mrs. S. P. Goodwin, Mrs. Emma Criss of Millerton, Pa.; a son, John Smith of Pine City; a brother, M. D. Sturdevant of Mansfield, Pa. The funeral will be held at the family home Monday at 1 o'clock. Marvin D. Sturdevant, 80, died Wednesday November 7, 10 p.m. at his home in Lambs Creek, following an illness of several years. Mr. Sturdevant’s death occurred eleven days after the death of Mrs. Sturdevant. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Sturdevant and was born in Jackson Township May 20, 1954. (it says 1954 in article but should be 1854). When a young man he was married to Miss Ella Henderson, who died October 27, 1934. He spent his entire life in Tioga County, most of the time in Covington and Richmond Townships. He was a member of the Methodist Church and Tioga Valley Grange of Mansfield. Unselfish, genial and friendly, Mr. Sturdevant made hosts of friends, who esteemed him for his true Christian character and upright business dealings. His survivors are nephews and nieces. The funeral was held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the home, the Rev. Douglas W. Baylis, of the Mansfield Methodist church, officiating. Interment was in Prospect Cemetery. The pall bearers were James Searles, Ed Fuller, Willard Fralic, Charles Howe, Sharon Davis, and W. B. Smith. (handwritten on article 1932)

at Hartwood Church in Feb 1863 and confined at Libby Prison for about 2
months. Pardoned and returned to regiment until Feb 1864 when discharged.
Henry Sturdevant of Nebraska, is visiting his brother, James A. Sturdevant
of Wells, his native home, from which place he has been absent for the
past thirty years. Mr. Sturdevant is prospering in his western home
(Troy Register, Thursday, February 5, 1903).

(Coryland News) Friends of this place received the sad news of the death of Alden Swayze, Sr., at his home in Canton. Mr. Swayze was almost a life resident of this place until a few years ago when he sold his farm and moved with his son, A. Swayze, Jr., to Col. X Roads, later he moved to Canton. The deceased is about 75 years old and is survived by his esteemed wife, three sons and one daughter. The funeral will he held at Col. X Roads Wednesday afternoon (Troy Register, Thursday, March, 19, 1903).
