LIVINGS

Joseph Livings b. c. 1766 New Jersey son of Richard and Rachel Livings is related to have m. Mary Beers, known as Polly, b. 17 Sept 1774 Orange County, New York daughter of Timothy Beers and Susanna Randall and she had m. Phineas Tompkins, Jr. It is doubtful that Polly was the mother of the children of Joseph Livings and certainly not those born prior to 1820 since Phineas was still living and enumerated in Orange County. New York. Phineas was enumerated in Warwick, Orange County, New York in 1800 with one male under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74), two females under age ten (b. 1791-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74). Phineas enumerated in Warwick in 1810 with two males under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). Phineas enumerated in Goshen, Orange County in 1820 with one male under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), one male of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one male over age forty five (b. before 1775), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1805-10), one female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1795-1804), one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), and one female over age forty five (b. before 1775).

Joseph Livings served in the War of 1812. Joseph first appears on the 1829 Wells assessment list. Enumerated in Wells in 1830 with one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of age sixty and under age seventy (b. 1761-70), two females of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one female of age twenty and under age thirty (b. 1801-10), and one female of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90). If Mary Beers was still his wife her correct age would have been fifty and under sixty. Children Timothy, Charlotte, and Elizabeth appear in the “poor children” list on the Wells tax assessment lists, Joseph unable to pay for their schooling. The name of the mother of the children was not always given in the assessment lists for the compilation of “poor children,” but in a few instances they were, and her name was given as Mary and once as Polly, Polly being the nickname for Mary. If Mary Beers was the mother of these children she would have been about fifty one years of age when Elizabeth was born. Possible, but since the age of the wife of Joseph in the 1830 census enumeration was b. in the 1780’s, if the census enumeration was correct, they may have had another mother with the name Mary. On the 1834 assessment list Joseph had transfered property to John Barnes, but remained in the township. Joseph last appears on the 1837 assessment list of Wells. Joseph was enumerated in Southport, Chemung County, New York in 1840 without a wife in his household, she perhaps deceased. Joseph was enumerated in Big Flats, Chemung County, New York in 1850, residing with daughter Charlotte and her family. Joseph removed with his married children and their families in 1853 to Whiteside and Rock Island Counties, Illinois. Joseph’s brother Daniel L. Livings and wife Mary Ellison also located there in 1853 where their daughter Margaret Livings and husband William Austin resided. Joseph is related to have d. 1857 Rock Island County, Illinois.
