GAYLORD
Lemuel Gaylord b. 14 Feb 1765 Bristol, Hartford, Connecticut son of Aaron Gaylord and Catherine Cole removed with his parents in 1768 to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania. Aaron was killed in the Battle of Wyoming. Catherine with children Lemuel, Phebe, and Lorena returned to Connecticut. Lemuel served during the Revolution in the state of Connecticut (R3958). At age 22, Lemuel returned to the Wyoming Valley and resided at Plymouth. Lemuel was of Plymouth when in 1791 he purchased of Thomas MaCluer (McClure) land at Athens. Lemuel m. 1791 at Athens, Sylvia Murray b. 17 Jan 1769 daughter of Rev. Noah Murray and Mary Stowe. Lemuel and Sylvia resided there for a period of time. Lemuel was one of 53 persons on a list of settlers of the Susquehanna Company’s grant of Columbia Township dated 26 Dec 1786. The Susquehanna Company formed by Connecticut had claimed parts of Pennsylvania. Their Columbia Township embraced a portion of the present Columbia Township. There is no evidence that Lemuel resided there. In the 1790’s they left Athens and crossed the state line into New York State and traveled west through the Chemung River Valley until they arrived at Seeley Creek in what is now Chemung County, New York and traveled south through the Seeley Creek Valley where the Seeley, Smith, and a few other families had settled and located just over the state line in Pennsylvania on Seeley Creek in what is now Wells Township, Bradford County a distance of some twenty five miles from Athens. Their farm bordered New York state and was later known as the Pedrick farm. They had few neighbors, the Kellys living on the other side of the state line and the Miller family living in Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania and a few other scattered families nearby. Sylvia is related to have taught school to the children of these families in her home. They resided in present Wells Township, but appear on most early records of Tioga County. Lemuel was assessed in the “Glass Tax” which was a list (assessment) of lands, lots, buildings and wharves, owned, possessed or occupied on the first day of October 1798 within Tyoga Township, Lycoming County. Lemuel was assessed for one house and 100 acres. Lemuel appears on the 1800 taxable list of Tioga Township, Lycoming County, farmer, age 35. Enumerated in Tioga Township, Lycoming County in 1800 as Lemuel Gallord. They continued to reside where they had settled in the Seeley Creek Valley and were enumerated in Smithfield Township, Lycoming County (Bradford County had not yet been formed) in 1810 with one male under the age of 10, two males of age 10 and under age 16, one male of age 45 and up, one female under age 10, and one female of age 26 and under age 45. On 17 May 1811 Lemuel purchased (1:352) 99 ½ acres (deed mentions beginning at a tree on the eastern line of warrant 1411) situated on Hammond Creek from the William Bingham trustees, which adjoined their earlier purchase of 100 acres. Lemuel sold (1:352) this property in June 1813 to son Aaron Gaylord. Lemuel appears on the 1814 assesment list (completed 10 Mar 1814) of Athens Township with the notation he was living in the newly created Wells Township, with 1 house, 1 horse, 2 oxen, 2 cows, 25 improved acres and 75 unimproved acres. Lemuel appears on the first assessment of Wells in 1814, but not after 1814. They sold (2:13) their original purchase of 100 acres on 9 Sept 1814 to Solomon L. Smith of Elmira and left their home on Seeley Creek in Wells Township and removed to Hamilton County, Ohio. Eldest children Aaron and Laura remained in Bradford County. Lemuel and Sylvia resided sixteen years in Ohio and then removed to Marshall County, Illinois being some of the first settlers in what is now Roberts Township. Sylvia d. 20 Mar 1843. Lemuel was enumerated in the household of daughter Lucy and family in Marshall County in 1850. Lemuel applied for a pension 15 Sept 1851. Lemuel d. 17 Nov 1854 (ts) buried with Sylvia in Cumberland Cemetery, Wenona, Marshall County, Illinois.

In an address given by Ross G. Watkins at the Old Rutland Hill Church on August 16, 1942 he stated – “One item which has seemingly escaped attention was the coming of two Mormon Elders and their flock to the scene. They strewed the countryside with their propaganda and soon the excitement was intense. Then more of them came until quite a colony was formed. After a bit, some opposition arose and they, with some of the settlers who embraced their faith, moved to near Liberty, Pa, where they founded the village of Nauvoo. (Meaning the beautiful.) There, more persecution arising, they moved to Illinois and founded a city also called Nauvoo in the year 1839. During a riot in 1844, Joseph Smith, the leader and his brother were killed and the building of their temple was stopped. Then Brigham Young led them on to Utah. During their stay here it seems they occupied this farm as I remember it, they left four of their number, two adults and two children to mingle with the dust on that knoll up there. As long as George Tanner owned this farm, he kept some field stones in place to mark their final resting place and inplaying around the old orchard as children, my cousin and I came upon them and were told by the old folks why they were there. What their names were or where they came from is all conjecture now but perhaps some older and abler historian might be able to find out and if so, I would like to hear from them (History of the Old Rutland Church, Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Ross G. Watkins, 1942).
They embraced the Mormon faith as did the Enos Curtis and Ruth Franklin family and others in Rutland Township and removed west. Alpheus d. 25 Dec 1841 Morley, Hancock County, Illinois. Anna d. 5 Sept 1879 Springdale, Utah.

She was a very estimable lady, of about fifty-five years, and a member of the Methodist church in the town. GOFF
Solomon Goff b. c. 1764 enlisted at East Haddam, Connecticut during the Revolutionary War. He is perhaps a son of Solomon Goff, but further research is needed. In the Early History of Berlin, Vermont by Mary Green Nye, 1795 is the first year that names were listed in the Town Meeting Record Book of persons taking the Freeman's Oath and among the names was Aaron Goff (father of Bethuel Goff who also removed to Wells Township). A footnote appended to the record of 1797 gives a list of names from the former town clerk as having taken the Freeman's oath prior to 1797, which had not been recorded, and included Solomon Goff, which is perhaps the Solomon Goff b. c. 1740 and possibly the father of Solomon b. c. 1764.
Solomon had a wife, Huldah b. c. 1776 (age 44 in 1820) baptised 20 Jan 1800 Eastbury, Connecticut. Removed in the spring of 1800 from Eastbury, Connecticut to Fabius, Onondaga County, New York and was enumerated there in 1800 with one male under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74), one male over age forty five (b. before 1755), one female under age ten (b. 1791-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1756-74). Enumerated in Fabius in 1810 with one male under age ten (b. 1801-10), one male of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), one male of age forty five and over (b. before 1765), four females under age ten (b. 1801-10), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1795-1800), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1766-84). The History of Tioga County, Pennsylvania, 1897, states that Solomon Goff settled north of Roseville in 1815. In Mar 1818 (pension application), resided Tioga County, Pennsylvania. Related to have removed to Wells from Sullivan Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania between 1818 and 1820. Sullivan and the future Rutland township, which had not yet been created bordered each other in Tioga County. Solomon does not appear on the 1816, 1817, 1818, 1819 or 1820 assessment lists of Jackson Township, which included part of the future Rutland Township. Solomon does not appear on the 1818 or 1819 assessment lists of Sullivan Township. The deposition for a pension would indicate he lived in Tioga County in 1818.

on this 8th day of July 1833, before me, the subscriber a Justice of
the Peace for the said County
of Medina personally appeared Solomon Goff, a revolutionary pensioner,
who on his oath declares that he is the same person who formerly belonged
to the company commanded by Captain Reed in the Regiment commanded by Colonel
Butler in the service of the United States; that his name was placed on
the pension rolls of the State of Pennsylvania, from whense he has lately
removed; that he now resides in the County of Medina in the State of Ohio
where he intends to remain, and wishes his pension to be there payable
in future. The following are his reasons for removing from the State of
Ohio - that having two daughters who had married & removed to said
County of Medina, he has removed also into said County for the purpose
of residing near them; also that he beleives that it would be easier to
support himself in the State of Ohio, than it was at the place where he
formerly resided in the State of Pennsylvania.

SOLOMON BATTERSON is to-day one of the most substantial and prominent stockmen of Larimer County, having acquired his large property with the help of his brave and energetic wife since their advent here some twenty-eight years ago. He came to Livermore in 1870, his only capital being two good wagons, harness, five horses, eight head of cattle and $65 after the expenses of the trip were paid. He paid $40 for a stove in Cheyenne, and the remaining $25 went for groceries and other provisions. He had his gun and it played a prominent part in their struggle during their first years of western life. He is a great hunter and a good shot, and has traveled all over the mountains of this state, killing deer, and would take the venison by wagon to Greeley or Cheyenne, selling it in a short time, but it would take about six weeks to make the trip and get home with the provisions, clothing, etc. He tanned the hides and then helped his wife convert them into buckskin suits. During this time she made butter for sale and kept such boarders as could be found in that locality, visitors to the mountains and people who were traveling through. By their untiring zeal they have acquired a considerable fortune, but the habit of industry still clings to them and to-day she has the best garden on North Park road. Mr. Batterson was born in the town of Hume, Allegany County, N. Y., August 26, 1830, his parents being Henry and Hannah (Goff) Batterson, of the same state. His grandfather came from Pennsylvania and settled in New York state, where the father was for some years a farmer. He then went to Cleveland, Ohio, where he was in the same business for twelve years, and from there went to Chicago. After a short time he settled on the Illinois River in Cass County, in the "Pecan Bottom," about fifteen miles northwest of Springfield. Later he moved to Chatfield, Minn., where he died. He married Hannah Goff, whose grandfather served in the Revolutionary war. She died in Illinois. They had three sons who grew to manhood: William, now a resident of Minnesota, and a soldier in the Civil war, from that state; Solomon, whose history is given in this sketch; and Horace, who was burned in the Chicago fire. The parents of Mr. Batterson moved to Cleveland when he was two years of age, and there he received his education in the public schools. When he was fourteen they moved to Chicago, and he worked out on the farm, first for Amos Deck, for four years, receiving $13, which was good wages for that time. The following four years he worked for Josh Morris. He remained at home until he was twenty-two and then went to Rockton, Winnebago County, and stopped at Harrison, Ill., on the Sugar River. He remained here two months, and then went to Fort Atkinson, Winneshiek County, Iowa, from there to New Oregon, same state, where he lived for five years. Going back to Harrison, Ill., he bought teams, wagons, etc., and in the fall set out for Necedah, Wis., to take up land. As he was not favorably impressed with the country, he went on through LaCrosse, and located ten miles from Owatonna, Steele County, Minn., where he engaged in farming for eight years. While living there the massacre of Blue Earth County occurred, and he moved his family to Riceville, Iowa, and from there to Algona, on the Des Moines River. However, not liking it there, he moved to Clear Lake and rented a farm of Judge George Frost and farmed for three years. The next two years were spent in teaming and railroading, and in 1870 he brought his family and teams, and drove his cattle through to Colorado. They had started for California, but stopped at the old Sherman place, near Fort Collins, to look around for a week, and then came to what is now Livermore Park, in August of that year, to locate. He homesteaded one hundred and six (Portrait and Biographical Record, Denver and Vicinity, 1898).
