HAMMOND
Amariah Hammond b. 18 Apr 1719 m. Mary Dudley b. 9 Aug 1723, often known as Polly. Amariah settled near Montville, Connecticut, where he was a farmer. Amariah received 60 acres of land from his father at or near what is now Montville. The deed, dated 5 Feb 1749, is found on page 176, Book 18 of the Town Records. He also purchased other lands in the vicinity. He sold lands there June 25, 1755, May 24, 1758, and May 22, 1760. Mary was a member of the North Parish (now Montville) church, of which Rev. David Jewett was pastor. The family was perhaps at Montville as late as 1762, as Amariah was appointed to be "Ensign in the 3d Regiment, 3d Company of Militia, in May, 1762." The record shows that he was in Capt. Zebulon Butler's Company in the Havana Expedition in that year (Col. Records Conn., Vol. 13, p. 452). It is probable that they removed to the vicinity of Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut, soon after 1762, and from there to the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, then considered a part of Connecticut. Mary is said to have died at Wyoming some years prior to Amariah’s death. Her father is said to have been killed at the siege of Louisburgh in 1749, and that Mrs. Dudley, her mother, removed to Wyoming with Amariah and Mary. It is said that Mrs. Dudley lived to be very old and that she was kindly cared for by her grandson, Lebbeus Hammond, after the death of her son-in-law. She is often mentioned in the traditional histories of Wyoming, although the name is given in some instances as "Granny" Headley instead of Dudley. Amariah was probably with Capt. Butler in the Wyoming troubles and undoubtedly met his death at the hands of an Indian either before the massacre or upon that fatal day. Chapman says he was killed by an Indian July 3, 1778, but his name is found on no tax list after August 1776. Amariah appears on a list of the taxable inhabitants in the town and county of Westmoreland, (Wyoming Valley of Pennsylvania and vicinity) State of Connecticut, 1776-80." "Kingston District Rate bill made on the August list, 1776." On this list are found "Amariah Hammond oe26-00-00, tax oe0-15-02," and his sons, "John Hammond oe30-00-00, tax oe0-17-06," and "Dudley Hammond oe21-00-00, tax oe0-12-03." On the list, for August, 1777, his name is not found, but four of his sons are on the list, viz: "William Hammond oe18-00-00, tax oe0-18-00; Lebbeus Hammond oe33-00-00, tax oe1-13-00; John Hammond oe28-00-00, tax oe1-08-00, and Oliver Hammond oe18-00-00, tax oe0-18-00." On the "Rate for Nov. 1, 1778, Kingston District," they appear with the same tax, except William, whose rating is cut down to oe11-00-00. (Wyoming Historical Society Collection, Vol. 5, pp. 211-219.) No list for 1779 is extant and on the list for 1780 no Hammonds are found. It is probable that all who escaped returned east and from there returned and traveled north on the Susquehanna River to what became Chemung County, New York. The name of Lebbeus Tubbs, whose daughter became the wife of Lebbeus Hammond, is found on all of the rate bills mentioned above, his rating being far in excess of that of any one of the Hammonds. Polly was enumerated in Newton, Tioga (that portion that became Chemung) County, New York in 1800 as a widow with one male under age ten (b. 1791-1800), two females under age ten (b. 1791-1800), one female of age ten and under age sixteen (b. 1785-90), one female of age sixteen and under age twenty six (b. 1775-84), and one female over age forty five (b. before 1755).

On the 27 Oct 1788 lot 113 of 1,000 acres was assigned to Lebbeus Hammond

Richmond Jones was born in Bloomfield, Essex Co., N. J., September 4, 1811. His great-grandfather Jones emigrated from Wales with his six brothers, and are supposed to have settled at different places in the United States. His grandfather, Elijah Jones, lived and was married in Norwalk, Conn., to Hannah Raymond, of a distinguished family; was a messenger of dispatches in the Revolutionary war for General Washington, and served until its close, at about which time he first settled in New Jersey; and subsequently, in the year 1798, came and settled in Newtown (now Elmira) with his family, which at that time and afterwards consisted of seventeen children, fourteen of whom lived to an average age of sixty-five years. The religious tenets of the family of Jones are Presbyterian, and its members have taken leading parts in establishing churches in that denomination; and particularly characteristic of the family is its uprightness, honesty, general intelligence, devout Christian principles, and liberal opinions on all matters relative to any enterprise tending to educate and elevate the rising generation, and to build up and improve the country, and a strong advocacy of temperance principles. Of this large family of children, the Rev. Simeon R. Jones, a very prominent clergyman, was eldest son, and was probably the first settled minister in Elmira. He lived to do very much good, and spent nearly his whole life in the Chemung valley, was chaplain in the war of 1812-14, and died at about the age of eighty-four. Joel Jones, father of the subject of this narrative, was third son of the family; was married before leaving New Jersey to Mary Munnward, a lady belonging to one of the most wealthy and influential families of that State; settled in Elmira in the year 1814; was a mechanic by occupation, and served as an elder of the Presbyterian Church for some thirty years. Died at the age of seventy-five, December 10, 1863. His wife died January 10, 1863. Mr. Jones spent his boyhood days mostly at school, in the best schools of Elmira. At the age of fifteen he became a clerk in the store of Joseph Viall, where he first became impressed with the idea of leading a mercantile life. At the age of twenty he established business for himself in Tioga Co., Pa., and also engaged largely in the manufacture of lumber, and dealing in the same at Daggett’s Mills, and at Wellsville, N. Y. Both in his mercantile business and lumber manufacturing he was successful. While at Wellsville he was in partnership with Mr. Bradley as lumber merchants, shipping to Albany, Troy, and New York. About the year 1849, Mr. Jones retaining his interests in Pennsylvania and New York, went to New York and opened an office as a jobber in lumber, which he continued for some three years, and returned to Elmira, where he has since resided, engaging still in the lumber business as a buyer and shipper. In connection with this business, he has engaged largely in real estate operations, mostly in the city of Elmira. Mr. Jones, although not solicitous of office, has been an ardent supporter of first the Whig party, and afterwards the Republican party, and is well read in all the current topics of the day. He is a man of strict honesty, of much consideration in the management of his business affairs, and prompt in the fulfillment of his least obligations. In the year 1843, October 24, he married Miss Sarah Ann, second daughter of Col. Ambrose Millard, Tioga, Pa. The family is of Scotch descent on her mother’s side (Gordon), and on the paternal side of English descent. They have two children, -Alice L., wife of Horace R. Hallock, of Detroit, Mich., and Millard R. Jones, a practicing attorney in New York. Mr. Jones had six brothers, one of whom -Isaac Ward -was prominently identified in New York as a grain and flour commission merchant for some twenty years, and was killed while attempting to pass from one car to another on the New Jersey Central in the year 1861, December 3 (History of Tioga, Chemung, Tompkins, & Schuyler Counties, New York).

John and Hannah Kelly are buried upon the farm where they resided. Some of the very oldest residents remembered two leaning markers on the the west side of Route 328 in the early 1930’s. The road has been widened twice and it is believed the burials are under the west side of the highway or the shoulder of the road. The State Line Hotel that still stands is on the west side of the road, then a house beside the hotel and north of the house about 100 feet would be the location of where John and Hannah and perhaps some other family members were buried.
