Williams House in 1907
The 1907 Directory lists this building as Williams House. A 1914 Advertisement for Welch House enables us to date that as the later name for the same establishment.
Welsh (Welch) Hotel stood on the south side of Main Street across from the Van Dyne Building. In the view blow it shows at left background.

Hello Joyce,

First I wanted to compliment you on your work on the Tri-Counties website. You have done a marvelous job putting everything together.  It has been particularly useful to me since so many of my ancestors on the Williams side lived in Elmira, NY, Troy, PA, and Bloss, Tioga Co., Pa beginning before 1850 and continuing until today, with my aunt by marriage, who currently lives in Gillett, PA.

My 2nd great grand uncle, Benjamin Williams operated the Williams House in Troy for several years.  I am not sure of the exact years that he owned and operated it.  However, I do know that he was evidently a resident of Troy at least between 1899, and 1906, as his daughter Katherine graduated from Troy High School in 1899 and his other daughter Louise graduated from the same school in 1906.  I found a record from the 1904 Troy Register that his brother, and my 2nd great grandfather, Llewellyn Williams visited him and his family and stayed at the Williams House in January and February of that year.

I saw Benjamin's name one of your web pages (I believe it was the 1907 list of businesses which had hotels listed).  However, I noticed that there was no picture of the hotel.  Some months ago, I happened to find a couple of post cards on eBay that showed the Williams House.  I thought you might be interested in scans of these in the hopes that they could get posted on the web site at some point in the near future.  I am attaching the two scans to this email.  Hopefully, they will be of sufficient quality for your use.

Thank you for your time and again for your diligence on the Tri-County site.

Sincerely,
David E. Williams
