Campaign: Chickamauga Campaign (1863)
Date(s): September 18-20, 1863
Principal Commanders: Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans and Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas [US]; Gen. Braxton Bragg and Lt. Gen. James Longstreet [CS]
Forces Engaged: The Army of the Cumberland [US]; Army of Tennessee [CS]
Estimated Casualties: 34,624 total (US 16,170; CS 18,454)
Description: After the Tullahoma Campaign, Rosecrans renewed his offensive, aiming to force the Confederates out of Chattanooga. The three army corps comprising Rosecrans’ s army split and set out for Chattanooga by separate routes. In early September, Rosecrans consolidated his forces scattered in Tennessee and Georgia and forced Bragg’s army out of Chattanooga, heading south. The Union troops followed it and brushed with it at Davis’ Cross Roads. Bragg was determined to reoccupy Chattanooga and decided to meet a part of Rosecrans’s army, defeat them, and then move back into the city. On the 17th he headed north, intending to meet and beat the XXI Army Corps. As Bragg marched north on the 18th, his cavalry and infantry fought with Union cavalry and mounted infantry which were armed with Spencer repeating rifles. Fighting began in earnest on the morning of the 19th, and Bragg’s men hammered but did not break the Union line. The next day, Bragg continued his assault on the Union line on the left, and in late morning, Rosecrans was informed that he had a gap in his line. In moving units to shore up the supposed gap, Rosencrans created one, and James Longstreet’s men promptly exploited it, driving one-third of the Union army, including Rosecrans himself, from the field. George H. Thomas took over command and began consolidating forces on Horseshoe Ridge and Snodgrass Hill. Although the Rebels launched determined assaults on these forces, they held until after dark. Thomas then led these men from the field leaving it to the Confederates. The Union retired to Chattanooga while the Rebels occupied the surrounding heights.
Result(s): Confederate victory
Regimental History
OHIO
THIRTY-THIRD INFANTRY
(Three Years)
Thirty-third Infantry. - Cols., Joshua W. Sill, Oscar F. Moore; Lieut.-Cols., Frederick J. Lock, James H. M. Montgomery, Joseph Hinson; Majs., Joshua V. Robinson, Ephraim J. Ellis, Benjamin F. Barger, Thomas Sikes. This regiment was organized at Portsmouth, from Aug. 27 to Oct. 11, 1861, to serve for three years. It entered the service with an aggregate of 839 men and joined the forces of Gen. Nelson at Maysville, Ky. Its service was somewhat varied during the first year, but it was in no actual engagement until at Perryville, where it went into the fight with 400 muskets and lost 129 men killed and wounded, 25 of whom were buried on the field. It took part in the battle of Chickamauga, going into action with 343 men, and losing in killed, wounded and missing, 168. It fell back with the main army to Rossville and Chattanooga and was cooped up in
that beleaguered city until Nov. 24, when it participated in the battle of Lookout mountain and lost heavily. It then rejoined its division and took part in carrying Missionary ridge, losing in that brilliant affair 31 men out of 200 engaged. The regiment then veteranized and after being furloughed home joined Gen. Sherman's forces on the Atlanta campaign, participating in the battles of Resaca, Cassville, Kennesaw mountain,
Peachtree creek, and Jonesboro. The aggregate number of officers and men killed and wounded in this campaign was about 170. The 33d followed Hood as far as Villanow, Ga., in his mad movement toward Nashville, after which it accompanied Sherman in his march to the sea and the campaign through the Carolinas. At Bentonville, N. C., it suffered severely, paying there its last tribute to the cause of the Union. It then made the triumphant march through the Confederate capital to Washington, where it participated in the grand review; was then taken to
Louisville, Ky., and mustered out on July 12, 1865.

WHITEHALL, MONTANA
Lewis & Clark passed through here in August 1805, the first white men to see this area once covered by a lake. The creek just south of here, named Panther Creek by them, was one of the routes of the Minnetaree Indian Tribe had recommended that the expedition take westward. The large Jefferson River, openness to the south and with Sacajawea looking for her people for them to get horses from, encouraged them to proceed on up the river.
Whitehall, named after a stage station that was located north of here, became a reality in 1890 when the Northern Pacific built their railroad from Logan to Butte. A depot, roundhouse and the like were needed to keep helper engines available to push trains over the Continental Divide. The Yellowstone Trail for car traffic kept the coast to coast route going through Whitehall and now with the trains gone it is Highway 90 that keeps the route alive.

She was born 09 Oct 1892 in Spooner, Washburn, WI, and died 22 Nov 1986 in Olympia, Thurston, WA, USA.
Notes for GUY STANLEY WINKLER:
GUY STANLEY WINKLER 1891-1973
Guy lost his father when he was 5 yrs. old. He and his mother moved around while she worked as a maid. When he was about 7 she left him in a home for children while she worked. She later returned to find out that he and the other children had been sent out onto the streets in Spokane, WA. to beg for money. She was horrified and never let him out of her sight again.
He went to school in Spokane and played baseball. There is a picture of him with his teammates. He went to Gonzaga for a short time and they offered him a position in the mathematics department. He instead taught himself to become a civil engineer, which is what he did for most of the 49 yrs. that he worked for the Great Northern Railroad. He started out as a chain man and he and your great-grandmother lived out in the woods in a tent when they were first married in 1922. They moved around in MT.
until my sister Betty was born in 1928.
He was a very special person. Strict but not quick to temper. I recall him putting shaving cream on my face and pretending to shave it. I use to sit for hours and just watch him. Sometimes he would take me to his office on Saturday and he would give me paper and pencils and rulers and a compass to play with. He took me to the park to play and I would climb on the huge stone camels that sat in front of the museum. This was at Volunteer park on Capitol Hill in Seattle. The museum is still there but the camels have moved inside.
We also used to feed the pigeons at a square in downtown Seattle near the railroad station. We would buy a small bag of popcorn and sit by a statue. This is probably gone now.
He loved to go out in the woods and pick wild huckleberries and wild blackberries. He always had some pails in the back of his work car. He made his crew pick berries sometimes too, much I'm sure to their chagrin, but he also helped them, loaning them money when they were
broke or getting them out of trouble so as not to lose their job, with no expectation of return or thanks.
He belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Spokane and although he was not active in the lodge activities for many years he held certain values close and lived his life (I believe) according to those rules.
He knew the value of a dollar, having lived through the depression and
cared for his mother until her death in 1925. He didn't believe in giving
lavish presents or spending money on frivolous things. At Christmas I was
given one nice gift and a stocking with nuts, candy and maybe an orange
or apple. I never felt underprivileged in my life. He didn't try to keep
up with the JONES. We always had a car, clothes, food and a warm safe place
to live.
