Hannah Astwood
Stephen Freeman, born approximately 1620, probably in England, arrived in New Haven, Connecticut, about 1635, bought a "home lot", and married Hannah Astwood, daughter of Captain John Astwood and his wife, Martha Carter. Stephen Freeman and his father-in-law, John Astwood, removed from New Haven and became two of the "Seven Pillars" (founders) of Milford, Connecticut.
John Astwood returned to England as the representative of the Connecticut Colony to the court of the King of England. John died in Aberthy, England, and his will mentions his mother and brother, both living in Aberthy, England. For more about John Astwood, see Appendix B.
Stephen and his wife, Hannah removed from Milford, Connecticut, and became among the first settlers and founders of what is now Newark, New Jersey.. A map of the "Town of New Ark in the State of New Jersey", shows the property of Stephen Freeman. For more see Appendix B.
The family moved West and North in the State of New Jersey, living for several generations in Morristown and other locations in Morris County, New Jersey.
There has been speculation that Stephen was a son of Edmund Freeman, a passenger on the Mayflower, but there is no evidence to prove this connection.
The History of New Haven Colony, History of the Town of Milford, Connecticut, the History of Newark, New Jersey, the History of Morris County, New Jersey, and the records of the First Church (First Presbyterian Church) of Morristown, New Jersey, are the sources of the family origins until after the Revolutionary War. From 1790 onwards, the Federal and New York State Census records have been used to follow the family.

Freeman and Hannah Astwood will contact me and add to the history of this
family of early settlers of Connecticut, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Hi Joyce,
The Freeman genealogy that I submitted to you should go into the Chemung Co., NY, (Chemung and Elmira) and the Bradford Co., PA, (Canton) sites.
Samuel Freeman and his wife, Margaret McCutcheon, moved from West Milford, NJ, to Chemung about 1850. Several of their children were born in Chemung. Walter S. Freeman, born in Chemung, moved to Bradford Co., PA, where he married Cora Ethel Bailey. Most of their children were born in or around Canton, PA. My siblings were born in Elmira, NY, or in Tioga County, PA. I was born in Alpine Junction, NY, and grew up in Tompkins County, NY, (Freeville and Ithaca).
I'm happy that you have the snow out there. I live here on the Pacific Coast because I do not care for cold weather and snow. I will take the rain any day.
