Dunham & Whalen Reunions
Of Warren Center, Pa.

Compiled by Lyle D. Rockwell, 201 Pleasant St., Athens, Pa. 18810 [lylerock@chilitech.net]

Compiler’s Notes:

The first Dunham & Whalen Reunions were held in 1905. This statement is based on the information that the last reunion was held in 1940 and was the 35th Reunion. These reunions were for the Family of Levi and Sallie Whalen Dunham of Warren Township, Bradford County, PA. Levi Dunham, born abt. 1820, died February 22, 1876, was a son of Elijah and Temperance Curtis Dunham. Sallie Whalen Dunham was born abt. 1831, died August 1, 1878, and was a daughter of Henry and Louisa Whalen of Warren Center. Levi & Sallie’s family home was where the present State Game Lands are today (2007), and just north of the Irish Cemetery between Cadis and Warren Center.

It seems that after Dr. Sydney Dunham died, the interest soon faded, and the reunions were no long held.

Photo of Bertha A. Dunham, daughter of Levi and Sallie Whalen Dunham, born March 24, 1863, died January 1, 1922, wife of Warren T. Brainard. Their child, Jesse A. Brainard, married Frances Theresa Dewing, and their children are Margaret, Laura, Theresa, Beatrice, and Albert. Theresa is the mother of Lyle D. Rockwell.

A note in the reunion book states that there were ten Dunham brothers who originally left England for the United States. Three were listed: Elijah, Orin, and Lorin Dunham. The other seven aren’t mentioned.

Mrs. Laura (Brainard) Allyn of Warren Center had the records of the Dunham & Whalen Reunion records in her possession, but only from the 20th annual reunion until the last one in 1940. It is from these records that this document has been compiled from.

Note from 1929 reunion:

Emma Camp was appointed to write a history of the families.

Note from 1934:

Dunham Genealogy being worked on 2 or 3 years by Mr. & Mrs. Earl Davis (in charge of Library) in Long Beach, Calif.

The Dunham and Whalen families met at the home of Jesse Brainard and family for their 30th annual reunion on August 17, 1935. A long picnic table was erected on the lawn and was seated to capacity. Sometime after 1 o’clock, the meeting was called to order by Dr. Dunham, the president. The minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary, Gertrude Dunham, and received approval. A reading was given by Gertrude Dunham: "How to Kiss deliciously." Comments and promises to practice up were heard among the crowd. Dr. Dunham gave an interesting talk on topics close to his work. After a bit of urgent persuasion, the "Tug-O-War" between the Dunhams and the Whalens was under way. Alas! The descendants of those gallant "Ten" Dunham brothers have let their number and strength die out. The Whalens are the victors. Numerous and interesting family pictures were on display at the Brainard home. The reunion ended up by singing old time songs around the organ. The Brainard family hosts to the 1935 30th annual reunion deserve hearty and unanimous thanks from those present. The same officers were elected for the 36th reunion.

The 31st annual Dunham and Whalen reunion was held at the Ladies Aide Hall Aug. 15, 1936 at Warren Center, Pa. Dr. Sydney Dunham, their life-long president and organizer and the one person in the whole reunion who has never missed a meeting, presided at the business meeting. The Dunhams and Whalens are getting to be a terribly noisy crowd when they ought to keep still and listen to their president, who has never failed them in all the past 31 years. Amid all the noise, it was decided to have both a treasurer and secretary. Mrs. Allen was named treasurer and Mrs. Viola Nichols the secretary. Dishwashing was brought up next. Reunion, wash the dishes or be quit and dignified about it and let the ladies of the aide do it. Reunion ladies decided to wash the dishes and if you listened to the rattle of the dishes, you knew they must be clean! The next question before the now partly scattered group, "Where Shall We Meet Next Year?" One lady over at the dish pan who had caught the comic side of the events spoke up with a touch of humor in her voice, "Up at My House!" Thus, amid perspiration and soap suds, the Dunham and Whalens had found a happy place to meet for their 32nd annual reunion at Mrs. Viola Nichols. Happy Reunion! Signed, Gertrude Dunham, Secretary.

A ballot was taken which decided we would try to have another one. Milton Bowen was elected president, and Mrs. J. A. Brainard, secretary. Four cents was left in the treasury. Mrs. Brearley gave me a slip with the expense on it, but I must have lost it out of the book, as I could not seem to find it.

When the descendants grew too numerous, they were held at the Warren Center Grange Hall throughout the late 1950s.

Joyce Tip Box -- December 2007 -
If you are not navigating this Tri-Counties Site via the left and right sidebars of the Current What's New page you are doing yourself a disservice. You can get to any place on the site easily by making yourself familiar with these subject and place topics. Try them all to be as familiar with the site's 16,000 plus pages as you can. Stop groping in the dark and take the lighted path. That's also the only way you'll find the search engines for the site or have access to the necessary messages I may leave for you. Make it easy on yourself.
