The Brooks Family Reunion
The fourth annual reunion of the descendants of Joseph Brooks was held at the old Brooks homestead in Leona, now occupied by Z Y Bailey, Sept 2, 1905, where a cordial reception was extended to all.

The gathering, though not as large as usual, was nevertheless quite well attended despite the threatening rain. There were between 60 and 70 present. At noon a bountiful dinner was served after which the meeting was called to order by the President, W W Brooks. An interesting program consisting of recitations and music, was well rendered. We make special mention of Mrs. W H S Loller who favored us with three selections.
Adjourned to meet the last Saturday in August 1906, at Alparon Park, Troy, Pa.

Brooks Family Sixth Reunion
The sixth annual reunion of the Brooks family was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Rundell in Canton, August 23rd. About seventy were present, together with a few invited friends. After dinner all were seated on the beautifully shaded lawn and enjoyed the program.

The address of welcome was given by Lee Brooks, Esq., of Canton and Mr. W W Brooks of East Troy, responded. Songs, instrumental music, recitations and remarks by different members followed. The day was one of enjoyment, several being present for the first time since the association was organized. The secretary reported that since the last meeting there have been two births, four marriages and three deaths.

The presence of Ruggles Brooks was greatly missed, he having been present at every previous reunion, and for a time was President of the Association. As the day was waning and clouds overcast the sky, all left for their homes thanking the host and hostess for a very happy day.

The next reunion to be held in Troy, August, 1908.

In the dining room the president, Lee Brooks called a business meeting, and gave a short address dwelling principally upon the thought: “Pride of Ancestry”. An interesting letter was read from Philander Brooks, whose home is in Washington, only four miles from the Canadian boundary.  The history of the Brooks family was read by the secretary.  A vote of thanks was extended to the historian, Mrs. Solon Brooks of Elmira, for her untiring efforts in compiling this work.

Since the last meeting there has been two marriages, five deaths and five births. Since our last reunion we have to record the death of five of our members, earl L Brooks, eldest son of Ambrose and Mary Brooks of Corning, Susie Brooks Campbell, secretary of this association and daughter of the late Ruggles Brooks of Alba, Susie Brooks Hubbard of Wetona. Brooks Reunion
The 11th annual reunion of the descendants of Joseph and Martha Brooks met at the pleasant home of Mrs. Nancy Brooks at Saco on Wednesday, August 28. Owing to the inclemency of the weather there were not as many present as usual. After the hostess and family had bid all a most hearty welcome and all had renewed old friendship after the separation of the past year, we were invited to the grange dining hall where the Ladies Aid Society of the town served a fine three course dinner to over 40. When all had been served and in the absence of the president, the vice president Robert Kier, presided in a very pleasing way. The meeting opened with prayer by Frank Brooks. As the secretary was absent there were no reading of the minutes. There have been four deaths since the last reunion, no marriages or births. At a late hour all departed for their homes with the wish that all who were present could meet on the first Wednesday of August 1913.

Fifty years of life have left us

Fifty years we’ve bourn life’s burden,
Fifty years we’ve traveled on.

Fifty years of lights and shadows,
Numbered with the many past.
Years are flying fast, and sometime
One will come and be the last.

Fifty years of disappointments,
Fifty years of toil and care—
We are growing old together,
Fifty years of whitening hair.

Fifty years of joyful labor,
Nearer to that restful shore:
Fifty nearer to that meeting,

Brooks Bailey, son of Z Y Bailey, died at his home in Leona at 10 o’clock last Friday. His death came with crushing weight upon his parents, sister and grandparents.

He was in the eleventh year of his age. Possessed of a rare and lovely nature, he was a favorite with all who knew him. Of him it could be truly said, he was good and his ways were manly. He was sick only a few days, yet all that medical skill and tender nursing could do, proved unavailing. His suffering was intense, but he bore them with remarkable patience and bravery. The funeral took place from the house Sunday afternoon. At his funeral flowers and tears, with the large attendance, testified how he was esteemed.                      H B Troxell

The Leona church and Sunday school assisted in performing the last sad rites for Brooks Bailey on Sunday the 10th mst. He was the only son of Z Y and Isadore Bailey, of Leona. Brooks was a loving and sprightly boy of ten summers, his father’s hopes and mother’s joy. He was a punctual and faithful attendant of the Sunday school and church, and with frank and manly qualities endeared himself to all of his acquaintances. He died of measles. A short time before his death he asked his attendant auntie if she heard those bells ringing. She replied that she did not. He said, “They are right here in the room” Undoubtedly angels were there to waft him to his home beyond the skies, where, free from pain, he sings praises to God and rejoice forever. (Pencil date of 1892)

Rutland Man Celebrates 90th Birthday (Yr unknown)

Amos Sargeant celebrated his 90th birthday at the home of his niece Mrs. J C Forrest, near Wellsboro, on July 2. He was born in Springfield, moving to Shunk, Sullivan County, when that place was but a wilderness. He was but a boy but helped his father cut the logs and build the house. In 1865 he married Melissa Stout- living at Shunk about eight years then moving to Rutland Township where he was active farmer until the death of his wife in 1926. Since then he has made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Pearl Forrest, of Columbia Cross Rds. Mr. Sargeant is one of Tioga County’s oldest residents. He is very active and in good health. He works in the garden and walks daily. The day he was 90 he walked nearly ten miles in about four hours.  He is the only one left of a family of eight children- living to be the oldest of the family.

GENEOLOGY

OF THE
Brooks Family
Transcribed for Tri-Counties Genealogy and History
by
Lynne Bergquist Howell

1765 – 1913

Dear Joyce:

Hi!  I found the Brooks Family Reunion page on the Tri-counties site, and I would like to add the little “Brooks Family Geneology” to the page http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/families/brooksreunion.htm

The little book was a gift given to me by my grandmother, Helen May Campbell Lyon (2 Nov 1903 – 5 Nov 1985).  She is a descendant of the Brooks family.

This short book was printed by THE TROY GAZETTE-REGISTER about 1913.  I believe it was compiled by Mrs. Solon Brooks of Elmira, NY.  The family history was first read to the family at a Brooks Family Reunion in 1908, and there was a donation taken up in 1911 to print the book.

I have attempted to keep the book true to form; therefore, I have left all spelling and factual errors in place including the misspelling of genealogy on the cover.  Though the book has few actual dates in it, it does give locations and has been a great resource in my research.  The original format is sometimes difficult to follow, but with perseverance the information can be sorted out by the reader.  I hope to forward an annotated copy of the book with some corrections and an index in the future.  I also hope to send some scanned photos of Brooks family members to put with the page.

If any Brooks descendants wish to contact me, they can do so at LBergquistHowell@gmail.com.

JOSEPH BROOKS

JOSEPH BROOKS was born in 1765 at Haddam, Connecticut, and lived at that place until forty-one years of age. He was a sea-faring man.
