Last Will of James Dewey

Surrogates Court, Towanda, Bradford County, PA

Registered June 20, 1829

In the name of God Amen. I James Dewey of the Township of Ridgebury County of Bradford and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania being weak in body but of sound mind, calling to mind the uncertainty of life & knowing that it is appointed for all once to die, do make this my last will and testament, that is to say, first I resign my soul into the hands of Almighty God who gave it to me, and my body to the Earth to be buried in a Christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors and wheat little property or estate that I have left after all my debts are fully paid I give unto my beloved wife Patience, one equal third of the whole for her, to have and to hold for benefits and uses in her own proper person during her natural life and on her decease to be divided equally between my heirs; unto my four sons V.I.G. James Dewey Junr. Nathan Dewey Ebeneser Dewey & Hiram Dewey all the remainder to be divided into four equal parts except as is herein after specified that is to say, there must be deducted from the share of my son James for what I have already given him to the amount of eighty dollars, that is fifty dollars at different times and thirty dollars of accounts which I have settled for him, also to be deducted from the share of my son Nathan one hundred dollars for what I have afsisted him, furthermore I give to my two Daughters Polly & Sally each five dollars and to my wife’s Daughter Marian VanCamp one Dollar and I direct also that each member of my family shall, including the s’d Marion VanCamp retain & keep for their proper use, each their wearing apparel which has been prepared for them and commonly called their own. And I do appoint James Dewey Junr and Calvin West both of the Township of Ridgebury Count of Bradford and commonwealth of Pennsylvania to be my Executors and I do mow declare this to be my last will and testament signed and Dated this 6th April 1829- James (hisXmark) Dewey

sealed in the presence of Lemuel Hudson, I. Montange Green George Baldwin Abial Fuller-

Probate received and Letters testamentary granted to James Dewey and Calvin West of Bradford County Executors of the foregoing will this 20th day of June AD 1829 said estate exhibit a true Inventory and render a just account of their said administration according to law. Given under the seal of the Registers office this 20th day of June AD 1829.
