1 Stayed at Mrs. Caswell’s the night before. Taught school, had 26 scholars. Andrew came to see me. Went to Mrs. King’s and stayed all night- had a good time

2 Andrew and I went to the school house. He went down to the Piollet’s. Had 33 scholars. Went to Mrs. White’s. Julius Drake came down in the evening.

3 Went down to the Piollet’s in the morning. Andrew and Aunt Theresa there. Stayed there to dinner. Bought 2 pair of drawers for $1.25. Went to Mr. Morgan’s to supper. Went up to Mr. White’s at night.

4 Stayed at Mr. White’s. Did not go to Sunday School. Went up to the school house to meeting in the afternoon. So warm we did not have any fire.

5 Taught school. Had 37 scholars. Went to Allen Conklin’s at night.

6 Rained nearly all day. Had a full school. Julius Drake at school half day. Went to Abel Lent’s in the evening. Went up to the Lent’s.

7 Another rainy day. When coming to school, took the boat and rowed across the pond and back. Went to Mr. Bull’s at night.

8 Went to Mr. Lent’s at night. Albert down to Myersburg to singing school.

9 Went to Mr. Spencer’s. In the evenening Geo Spencer & wife came home. Also Henry & wife & Gab Sophia & Frank King. Had oysters and a good time.

10 Went down to Wysox. Had a letter from Uncle Alex. Went to Towanda. Lost my gloves and got a new pair. Went up to Mr. Lent’s. Mr. King’s young folks there. Came back and stayed at Mr. Spencer’s.

11 Rose at 8:30. Went down to Wysox to Sunday school. Came back to Mr. Spencer’s & stayed till night then came down to Mr. White’s.

12 Quite cold. Went to Mr. Webb’s at night – played blindfold.

13 Went to Mr. Green’s. Commenced snowing in the evening. Went up to Mr. Knight’s, the boys not at home.

14 Quite cold. Went down to Mr. Bustings. Very rough walking. Not much snow.

15 Very cold. Went to Mr. Knight to stay all night.

16 Alice and Frank not at school. Olive Patterson and Susie Davenport at school a little while, also Wilson Green. Went to Mr. White’s and down to Sam Owens to a sociable.

17 Went to Wysox. Stayed to Mr. Piollet’s to dinner. Came back to Mr. White’s in the afternoon. Read a letter from Libbie and one from mother.

18 In the morning went to Sunday School. In the evening went over to Shores Hill to meeting. Went up to see Marion a few minutes before meeting.

 

 

19 Not very cold. Rained quite fast in the evening. Went to Henry Spencer’s.

 

 

20 A little colder. Went to Mr. Drake’s. Preaching at the school house in the evening.

21 Quite windy. Found the fire out at the school house. Went to Mr. King’s. Julius Drake and John Hoaglin there in the evening.

22 Quite warm. Went to Mr. Lent’s at night. Very muddy. Did not go for prayer meeting.

23 Colder in the afternoon. Went to Mr. Spencer’s at night.

24 Went down to the office in the morning. Went up to Mr. Morgan’s to dinner. Stopped at Mr. Passmore’s on my way to Mr. White’s. Did not get any letters.

25 Mr. White not very well. Helped Elmer a little about the chores. Went down and drove to Sunday school for Mary. In the evening went up to the school house to meeting. Went up to Mr. Lent’s a little while after meeting.

 

 

26 Quite cold. Fire in the stove. Played ball at noon. Kept quite a number of scholars after school. Went to the Hoaglin’s.

27 Not as cold. Played ball at noon. Snowed quite fast for a little while in the afternoon. Went to Mr. Hartshaw. Went up to Mr. King’s in the evening. Rained about bed time.

28 Rained fast in the morning. Played ball at. Very muddy at night. Went to Mr. Bull’s. Played Blindfold.

29 Colder. After school went up to Col. Green’s to supper. Had a spelling school in the evening. Spelled the school clown. Went to Mr. King’s to stay all night.

30 Very cold. Not a very large school. Went to a candy party at Allen Conklin’s. Danced a little. Rode with Mr. King’s folks. Run the tire off and broke a whiffletree bolt. Got home at 3 o clock am.

31 Did not go down to Wysox as I got my letters last night. Went fishing for bait – and fell in the creek. Went up to Mr. Lent’s in the evening. Got home about 10 pm.

1 Did not go to Sunday school. Went to meeting in the school house in the afternoon. Came back to Mr. White’s after meeting. The minister there to supper, no one there in the evening.

2 Snowed quite fast in the afternoon. Went to Mr. Lent’s.

3 Not much snow nor very cold. Went to Mr. Allen’s.

4 Quite cold. Went to the Davenport’s, had a pleasant time.

5 Cold. Got to the school house at 7. Played ball with the boys after school. Went to Mr. Conklin’s. Came to prayer meeting in the evening. Company at Mr. Conklin’s, went to bed about 1 am.

6 Quite late at the school house. Cold. Snowed in the afternoon. Went to Abel Lent’s. Went to Mr. Lent’s in the evening.

7 Good sleighing. Went down to Mr. White’s to dinner. Went down to Piollet’s. Got a ride to Towanda. Came back to Mr. White’s.

8 Went to Sunday School in the morning. Went to Mr. Piollet’s. Had a sleigh ride with Heister. Mr. Piollet came up to the pond and brought me up. At Mr. Lent’s in the evening. Went to bed about 12 am.

9 Quite cold. Got to the school house in good season. Geo King called and invited me to a party at Mr. Bull’s on Tuesday night. Went to Mr. Bull’s to stay all night. In the evening went up and asked Abbie to go to the party.

10 At the school house in good time. Went down to Mr. White’s. Had his horse and cutter to go to the party. Had a good time. Bill $.31.

Got to Mr. White’s about 2 am.

11 Pretty cold. Got to the school house about 8. Quite sleepy in the afternoon. Susie Davenport out a few minutes before school was out. Went to Ira Bull’s.

12 Warmer. Went to Col. Green’s at night. Went down   to the school house in the evening but no meeting. Went to bed about 9 pm.

13 Thawing fast. Rained part of the time. Newton Drake brought an ax and I cut kindling wood enough to last the rest of the term. Went to Old Mr. Conklin’s

14 Stayed at Mr. Conklin’s till about 11 am. Joseph took me to Myersburg. Got some mail. Put in my books. Went to the office. Read a letter from Anna and a card from father. Went up to Mr. Morgan’s. Stayed till night. Went up to Mr. Lent’s in the evening. McCormick there.

 

15 Quite muddy. Did not go to Sunday School. Went up to the school house and built a fire for meeting. Not many out. Pratt Smith & Cinny Post at Mr. White’s in the evening.

16 Not a very large school. Andrew came to see me on his way to Towanda. Went as far as Mr. Spencer’s with him. Went to Mr. Spencer’s at night.

 

17 Cold. Went to Mr. Caswell’s at night. Ink froze in the school house for the first time this winter when there was a fire.

18 Quite cold. Had a pretty large school. Went to Mr. Lent’s. Barbary & Abbie at Spencer’s till in the evening. Promised to go there Sunday evening.

19 Rather late at the school house. Had a pretty good fire. Played ball at noon. Alice at school in the forenoon. Went home with a lame neck. Went to Allen Conklin’s.

20 Quite muddy. Went to Dayton Allen’s after school. Had a spelling school in the evening. Had a good one. Went to Mr. Allen’s to stay all night.

 

21 Had breakfast early. Rained hard until 10. Went to Mr. White’s. After dinner went to the office. Had a letter from father & a card about photos. Came back. Expected to go to Mr. King’s but it rained. Foggy. To have a frost - 21st may.

22 Warm & rainy. Did not go to Sunday school. Julius Drake down to Mr. White’s. I went up to see Abbie in the evening. Got back at 12:30 am. Very foggy. Alice fixed a tin pail on the stairs for me but I got in the window.

 

23 Muddy. Quite a full school. Went to Mr. Bustin’s. Played eucher with the boys. Getting colder in the evening.

 

24 Frozen quite hard. Went to Mr. King’s. Soph not at home till along in the evening. Had a good time. Mr. Layton & Hatti there in the evening.

25 Commenced snowing in the morning. Went to Mr. Lent’s. Stopped a few minutes to see them put up ice. McCormick there in the evening. Went to bed about 12. It snowed all day.

26 Arose at 7:30. Did not snow much in the night. Went to Mr. White’s at night. Went to Towanda and got some cards for the scholars. Found Supt Keeney at White’s when I came back.

27 Mr. Keeney at school in the fore noon. Cinny Post, Helen Gard & Nettie Passmore at school also. Jul Drake and Mr. Allen. The last day of my school this winter. Had a good spelling school in the evening. Alice & Hanora spelled the school down. Stayed at Drake’s.

28 Rode down to the depot with Julius. Rode back with Mr. White. Worked on my report a while. About 4 pm Alice, Joanna & I went to Mr. Conklin’s. Joseph took us over to Mr. Patterson’s. Got back about 2 am.

1 Got up at 8 am. Went up to  the school house to meeting at 2 pm. Stopped at Henry Spencer’s to supper. Went up to Mr. Lent’s. Mc there. Exchanged photos with Abbie. Got to Mr. White’s about 11 pm.

2 Commenced work at my report as soon as I got up. Finished it about noon. After dinner packed up my things and left them to be carried to the depot. Went up to Mr. King’s to stay all night. Ad Allen there also Mr. and Mrs. Harlow & Aunt Norra.

3 In the forenoon went to the woods with the boys to saw shingle bolts. After dinner went to the barn with boys a while and then started for Shore’s Hill. Stayed at Mrs. Shore’s, had a pleasant time. Marion played and sang quite well.

4 Went to school in the morning with Marion. At noon played ball. The ball struck my pivot tooth & knocked it out. Went to Towanda and had another one put in and a tooth filled by Dodson. $1.50 each. Went to Herbs to supper and to singing school. Went to Mr. Gard’s to stay all night.

5 Went to school in the morning. Played ball at noon. After noon Ad Allen came to school. At recess went to Mr. Smith’s. From there went round to James Gard’s to stay all night. Heard of Mr. Hoaglin’s death.

6 Went around and bid the folks good bye. Went over to the funeral. Rode up to the grave with Jo Conklin. It snowed very fast. Went to White’s to dinner. Went to Piollet’s. Bought my ticket but did not go home. Stayed at Mr. Piollet’s and played eucher, had a good time.

7 Helped to clear the snow off the depot. Went up to Mr. Morgan’s. Mr. & Mrs. Morgan went to Myersburg. Helped do up the chores. Stayed at Morgan’s all night.

8 Arose between 8 & 9. Went to Sunday school. Stopped at Mr. Piollet’s on my way back. Went back to Morgan’s to dinner. Gab there in the evening. Went to bed about 9 pm.

9 Went down to Piollet’s in the forenoon. Took dinner at Jo’s at 5:45. Took the cars for Owego. Had to ride from Towanda to Sayre in the mail car. Walked from Owego to Geo Griswold’s. Very blustery and drifting.

10 Started for home about 9:30 am. Got a ride more than half way. Stopped at Anna’s for dinner. Irvin brought me over. Lib at home. Dr. came in the stage.

 

11 Took the Dr. and Lib to little Meadows. Stayed nearly all day and Lib came back at night. Quite cold and good sleighing. Road by Geo Tallmadge drifted full.

12 Father went to Owego with Alex. I cut and drawed some wood. Blistered my hands. Quite cold. Andrew did not come home.  Had all the chores to do. Wrote to Abbie in the evening.

13 Went to the woods to chop. Irvin came along with Anna. Went down to Uncles and got my ?volin? hired to him for 8 months for 25 a month. Drawed wood in the afternoon. Went to L.M. for Dr. in the evening. Had Irvin’s cutter.

14 Took Dr. to L.M. Helped Andrew saw logs. Cyrus Wheaton payed me $200. Went to the store after tea. Bought a pair of gloves for $1.50.

 

 

15 Pleasant. Went to the church to build a fire but Mr. Macnab had one built. Text Rom 8:34. Anna stopped to dinner. The Dr. came in the afternoon. In the evening went down to uncles to meeting, text 1 John 3:1.

16 Commenced working for Uncle Alex. Took a note for $45 of Dr. against A. Graves and paid father $30 for Dr. and rec’d what he owed me. Chopped wood. Went up home in the evening.

17 Got up at 6 am. Thawing fast. Did up the chores. Went up to Tougheys and got the sled. Drew wood. Mary Bowen down. Ruth went up to our house. Did not go anywhere in the car. Greased my boots. Quite foggy.

18 Uncle Alex went to Towanda. I chopped wood at the door. A thunder shower just before dark. Went up home in the evening. Very muddy.

19 Very muddy. Showery. I cut wood at the door. Helped El shell corn. In the evening wrote to Alice.

20 cut wood. Uncle Alex did not get home till nearly dark. The mail did not come till 9:30. Andrew down. Colder in the evening.

 

21 Frozen quite hard but thawed out in a short time. In the forenoon cut wood & in the afternoon thrashed. In the evening went up to Newman’s to choir meeting.

22 The ground quite white but the snow soon melted. Went to church. Text John 3:10. Very muddy. No meeting in the evening. Went up home and sung.

 

23 Very cold and windy. Threshed in the forenoon and cleaned up in the afternoon. Up home in the evening. Lib home. Let her have $100 for the Dr.

 

24 Cold and windy. Cut wood at the door. Rec’d my __ of Uncle Alex and let him have enough to make $660. Andrew down in the evening.

25 Not quite so cold & Lib went home. Drew hay in the forenoon and in the afternoon split rails. Up home in the evening. Clara Bowen married today.

26 Warmer. Uncle Alex went to Owego. Took a calf. I went up and split rails till about 2 pm when it rained so I came down. Fixed the heifers manger and then sawed wood. Wrote to Marian in the evening.

27 Quite cold in the morning but muddy in the middle of the day. Split rails. Anna down in the afternoon. Irvin down in the evening a little while.

28 Quite a little snow. I finished thrashing. Very muddy. Went up to Newmans in the evening to choir meeting. Had all the maple sugar we could eat.

29 Frozen quite hard in the morning but very muddy through the day. Went to meeting. Text Is 17:6-7. No meeting in the evening. Went up home. Grandfather there.

30 Frozen in the morning. Cut a load and in the afternoon drawed out rails. Did not go any where in the evening. Very pleasant.

31 Frozen hard all day. Split rails in the evening. The girls and I went over to Miss Sparings exhibition. Nett there. I sat with her.

1 Quite pleasant, but cold. Cut hemlock wood in the wood in the afternoon and in the forenoon. Drew hay. Saw Will Hall a few minutes. Went up home in the evening.

2 Warmer. In the forenoon drew out rails. Pole etc. in the afternoon. Drew the hemlock wood up the bank. Went up to Anna’s in the evening.

3 Colder. Layed the line find between Alex and Beardslee’s. Last day of school. Received a letter from Alice.

 

 

 

4 Very cold. Cut wood at the door. Uncle went to Ed Tripp’s sale. Went up to Mr. Young’s to choir meeting.

5 Thermometer 8-10 degrees above 0. Went to meeting on  horseback. Ruth not well enough to go. Text 1 Peter 1:22. Meeting at Newman’s at 3:30 on account of Uncle Dan, text Rom 8:18. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

 

 

6 A little snow. In the forenoon drew a load of boards from Tripp’s on the bobs. In the afternoon took the wagon. Went up to Mr. Young’s in the evening and Irvin made a whip lash for me.

7 Quite warm. Split up the hemlock wood for kindling. Getting very muddy. Andrew down in the evening & I did not go anywhere.

8 In the forenoon drew manure. In the afternoon fixed fence. Frozen so I could not drive stakes. Rained some in the afternoon and quite fast in the evening. Ruth up to our house all night. I did not go anywhere.

9 Trimmed appletrees all day. In the evening Andrew and I called at Mr. McLaurie’s and went up and bought sugar for a party. Snow in the evening.

10 About a foot of snow. I drew up the hemlock wood. Andrew drew a log to the mill. Read a letter from Abbie. Went up home in the evening. Irvin & Anna there. Mother sugared off. Stopped milking the little heifer.

11 Quite cold. Uncle Alex and I went to a sale. Bought a plow. Very squally in the afternoon & quite cold at night. Quite good sleighing. Did not go up to choir meeting.

12 Thermometer about 10 deg above 0. Quite good sleighing & pleasant. Went to meeting. Text Ps 119:19. No meeting in evening. Went up home & wrote to Abbie after I came back. Andrew and Dimon at uncles.

13 Thermometer 6 deg above 0 before sunrise but quite warm through the day. In forenoon drew hay. In the afternoon drew out rails. Mattie over in the evening. Wrote to Lib and Alice.

14 Frozen a little in the morning but thawed very fast through the day. Drew out rails and wood. Mary Bowen here to dinner. Went up home in the evening. Rec’d a letter from Marion. Lightning in the evening.

15 Warm. A little rain about noon. I drew out the scattering manure around the barn. Ruth up to our house to stay all night. I did not go anywhere in the evening.

16  Frozen some & I cut wood at the door. Went up home in the evening. Our folks went over to Frank’s in the afternoon.

17 Commenced snowing in the morning and snowed all day (about 6 inches). I cleaned the calf pen. Washed the brass harness. The Dr. out. I let him have $500.

 

18 Warmer. The snow nearly all went off. I sawed hemlock wood. Went up home and from there over to Anna’s to choir meeting. Had a good sing.

19 Quite warm. The girls and I went to meeting. Text Prov 4:7. Roads beginning to get hard. Dimon down and took El riding. I went up home. Mattie and Florence at Uncles. I went over with them and heard frogs for the first time.

20 Rainy in the forenoon. I greased the wagons etc. In the afternoon sawed wood. Ruth went up to our house to stay all night. A thunder shower just at night.

21 A little colder. I fixed the line fence next to Beardslee’s. In the evening went up home. Concluded to have a party Thursday night.

22 Very muddy. Uncle Alex went to Owego with McCormick. I fixed fence for side of the road. In the evening went over and asked Alice to go to the party.

23 Rained all day. In the morning took a cow up to our bull. Fixed fence, got wet through. Did not think to go to the party but creek folks came about 9 pm so we went. Had a good time. Got home at 3:15 am.

24 Quite sleepy. Got up at 5:10. Fixed fence. At night took up our folks mail. Found Andrew had left. Mother rec’d a letter from Lib.

25 Fixed fence in forenoon. Had a diarrhea. Commenced snowing at 10 am. Cleared the brush off the orchard. Fixed wheel on the plow. Went up home quite sick. After I got back Charles came about 10 pm. Snowed fast.

26 About 1 foot of snow. We did not go to meeting, I went up home. Did not feel very well. Father went to meeting. Came down to do the chores. Read most of the evening. Borrowed 1 dollar of mother.

27 In the morning drew hay. In afternoon went up & got stake cut and split it up. Got a paper of nails and went up home and calked my boots. Thawed quite fast through the day.

28 Frozen hard enough to bear up a horse quite well. Snowed some nearly all day. I sawed wood. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

29 Thermometer at 28. Did not thaw much all day. Mother & Irvin & Anna here. I cut wood. My 28th birthday. Cold in the evening. ?Buck? sits up with Mrs. Beardslee tonight.

30 Frozen hard in the morning but thawed quite fast through the day. I sawed wood. Wrote to Marion in the evening. Mother went after Andrew today.

1 Frozen some & the ground still covered with snow in the morning but nearly bare at night. Sawed wood and made a water trough. Went up home a while in the evening.

2 Chilly. The snow did not melt much. I finished cutting wood. Went to preparatory lecture. Went up to Newmans to choir meeting. Juliet Bales and husband at Mr. King’s.

3 Frozen hard. Very pleasant. Communion today, quite a large attendance. Charles preached, text Luke 23:26. Minnie Pieronett at church. I went up home in the afternoon. Andrew down in the evening.

4 Uncle Alex and Charles went to Montrose. I sharpened posts for fence & staked fence below George’s. Went up home in the evening. Grandfather there.

5 Warmer. Worked at the board fence around the calf lot. Father traded horses. Shoemaker here. Went up to Newman’s and got some sugar. Alex & Charles got home about 6 pm.

6 Uncle Alex took Charles to Owego. I drew the manure from the calf pen with Mosby. Went up home in evening. Did not get back till after Alex came.

7 Finished board fence. Thermometer 29 degrees in the morning. Had a sugar party at our house in the evening. I went down & got Nett. Did not get home till 4. Let father have $100.

8 Arose at 5. Laid over some fence. Went up home a few minutes in the evening. Went to bed early.

9 Very warm. I plowed. The horses worked well. Went up to Mc Laurie’s to choir meeting in the evening.

10 Warm. Thermometer in the sun over 100. Went to meeting. Text 1 Tim 1:16. Sabbath school organized. In afternoon went to Red. S.H. to meeting with mother. Text Rom 3:31. Came home by the creek. In the evening took a cow up to our bull.

 

 

11 In morning finished plowing corn ground. At noon went to McLaurie and got a load of hay. Commen-ced plowing potato ground. Our folks went to Towanda. I went up home and helped mother do the chores then came here about 9.

12 Finished plowing potato ground. Quite warm. Anna & Theresa came home in stage. I went up home in the evening. Our folks sowed old fallow to oats.

13 Broke up in the forenoon. In the afternoon plowed the garden etc. Went up home in the evening. Very warm.

14 Drew manure up on the ground by the shamrocks. Father & Andrew went to Towanda. I helped do the chores and I stayed all night. Quite warm.

15 Finished drawing manure and sowed oats. Went up home to help mother. Father & Andrew came at 8. The directors got a ?monsuit-wesel? up to Mr. Young’s.

16 Sowed oats below George’s. Went over on Fessenden Hill in forenoon after young cattle. Went up home in evening.

17 Went to Sunday school & meeting. Text Jas 4:7. Meeting at 3:30 at White school house, text Mat 9:16. Went up home in evening. Wrote for lesson leaves and sent $2.25 to pay for them.

18 Uncle Alex went to Owego. Father also went and got Lib. I borrowed $5. of Andrew. I went up home in the evening. Ruth up there all night. Quite cool.

19 Cool. Plowed in the forenoon. In afternoon. Went up to Newman Bowen’s to a Crystal Wedding. Gave Mary a sauce dish. Went up home in the evening.

20 Plowed in the forenoon. In the afternoon it rained. I fixed back buttery. After rain drew out manure. Did not go anywhere in evening.

21 Very cool. Finished bricking up in forenoon. In afternoon plowed a small field back of Geo’s for oats.

Quite muddy. Went home in the evening. Mixed shampooing stuff and used some of it.

22 Put a postal card in the office which John supposed to send. Also one for Andrew. Plowed back of barn. Drew manure & sowed oats back of George’s. Rec’d lesson leaves. Up to store for butter tub.

23 Light frost in the morning. Sowed hay seed in the morning. Furrowed potato ground and commenced planting. Col. Piollet and Dorrance up to stay all night.

24 Very busy before meeting. Went up home to dinner. All of us children there. Rode over to meeting with Dimon. Rode up home with Irvin in the evening. Quite warm.

25 Rained nearly all the forenoon. I carried rubbish out of the cellar. Sorted potatoes etc. In afternoon drew manure, very heavy shower. McLuaurie girls down in the evening. I went up home with them.

 

 

 

26 Cold and misty. I drew manure. Aunt Theresa went up to our house. I went up home in the evening.

27 Finished drawing manure on corn ground. In the afternoon planted potatoes. Little heifer had a calf today. Up home in the evening.

28 Finished planting potatoes. Sowed peas etc. Harrowed on corn ground. Towards night Lib and mother down here. Went up home & Andrew and I  skinned one of friend Oliver’s yearlings.

29 Planted sweet corn early. Rose potatoes etc. Finished harrowing & marked corn ground. Mosby fell down with me and hurt my knee. 89 degrees in the shade 108 in the sun. Dr. came out and got Lib.

30 Very warm. I commenced planting corn. Decoration day. I did not go anywhere in the evening.

31 Pleasant. Went to S.S. & church. Text Acts 26:17-18. Meeting in afternoon at White S. house. Not many out on account of a shower. Text Rom 3:22. Went home in evening.

1 Quite cool. I drew off old rails etc. in forenoon. In afternoon finished planting corn. Did not go anywhere in evening. Mrs. Dowe paid int. on Britts note.

2 Frost in the morning. Planted potatoes, beans etc. Went up to McLaurie’s and got some hay. Went up home in the evening.

3 Uncle Alex & the girls went to Owego. I helped Aunt T. in flowers & laid over some fence. Rainy in afternoon. I stayed at home in evening.

4 Fixed fence in forenoon. Saw Burt Green. In afternoon put ashes & plaster on the corn. Andrew and I went to L. M. in the evening. Put up some oats for Dr.

5 Fixed brush & rail fence most of the day. Shower in afternoon. Put hinges on cellar door. Mel Owen here. Read a letter from Abbie. Up home.

6 Fixed fence. Very heavy shower in the afternoon. Very warm. Mother and Andrew went to Owego. Went up home in evening. Paid Andrew $5 & mother $1.40. Got hat, pant, stuff etc.

7 Very warm. Went to S.S. & meeting. Text John 6:28-29. Meeting in afternoon at W. Bordens. Text Rom 8:3-4. Went home few minutes in evening. Andrew & Dimon down in evening.

8 Cooler. I broke up for buck wheat. Went over to George’s in evening to get a drink of cider.

9 Hot. I fixed up the privy in the forenoon & staked fence along the road. In afternoon fixed brush fence. Showery. Went up home in evening. Horses up in the McCul’s lot.

10 Cool. Uncle Alex went to Owego. I laid up the wall back of the house. Did not go anywhere in evening. Alex did not come home.

11 Quite showery. I cleaned grass out of the walks & put up a leach. Alex got home before dark. I went up home in the evening.

12 Showery in the forenoon. I fixed fence up the hill by the road. Andrew down to the office in the evening. I did not go anywhere.

13 Very cool. I put up twine on the corn. Ground and planted over what corn did not come up and what the crows pulled. In the evening we went up to McLaurie’s. Andrew & Dimon there.

14 Cool. Went to church & S.S. Text Mark 4:28-29. The girls & Andrew & I went to Red S. House in P.M. Text Ezk 1:13-14. I went home in evening.

15 Pleasant. I cut brush at lower end of the pasture. After supper planted corn for fodder. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

16 Cloudy. I hoed in the garden in forenoon. In afternoon shingled the privy and fixed the roof. Rainy in the afternoon & evening. I did not go anywhere.

17 Showery in morning. I split wood and piled it under the house. Went up home in evening.

18 Cool. In morning piled wood. Worked on the road. In the evening went up home. Irvin & Anna over. Ruth & El went over to George’s.

19 Uncle Alex went to Owego with Cain. I sowed buck wheat. Drew some rails to put on fence. In evening took the lineback heifer up to our bull. Had a hard time.

20 Cool. Worked on the road by George’s. Did not go anywhere in evening. Florence & Mattie over but I did not see them. Went to bed early.

21 Cool. Went to church and S.S. Quite a good number at S.S. Text Ps 52:8. Meeting at the White S. House, text 1 Cor 1:17. Not many there. Went up home in evening.

 

22 Quite warm. Uncle Alex & Aunt T. went to Binghamton. I mowed grass by B.S. Shop. Had early potatoes & Alex did not get home.

23 Warm. Ther. 85 degrees in shade. I laid over fence, put up grass, cleaned out spring, piled wood etc. Uncle came about 8. Andrew down & had a good sing.

24 Worked on the road. Stirred hay over at noon & got it in at night. Went up home in evening. Ruth & Aunt T. went to Wysox.

25 Cut grass near wagon house. Hoed sweet corn etc. Up home in evening. Quite a heavy shower.

26 Stirred over grass in forenoon. Quite heavy shower at noon. Afternoon worked on the road. Very heavy shower about 4:30. Did not go anywhere in evening.

27 Quite foggy in the morning. I started for Wysox at 10:30. Arrived at Mrs. White’s at 2:30. In the evening got Abbie and called at Mr. King’s. Went to Mr. White’s to stay all night.

28 Very warm. Therm 92 degrees in shade. Went up to S.S. at 10. After dinner Alice & I went up to Mr. Lent’s in evening. Got to Mr. White’s about 2 am.

29 Started home about 6. Did not get home till almost noon. Eat dinner at home. Went down and found James at Uncle’s. Got the hay in just before heavy thunder shower. Andrew & I took McLaurie girls to L.M.

30 Mowed small hill with machine. In afternoon cultivated corn. Read a letter from Dr. & Lib. Went home in evening.

1 Very warm. I mowed a little while in the morning and then hoed corn the rest of the forenoon. P.M. raked & put in three loads of hay. Hawley helped us. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

2 Cooler. Took little heifer  up to our bull. Hoed corn in forenoon. P.M. drew two small loads of hay then cultivated potatoes. Wrote to Alice in evening.

3 Cool. Uncle & Charles went to Owego. I mowed a little. Made a coop for the turkey and plowed out potatoes. Em Himble up to school. I asked Julia McLaurie to go to 4th over to Treadwell in evening.

4 Rained in the morning. A little showery all day. I had beans, got in hay etc. Went down to Harry Barnes in  evening, Had supper & fire works, had a good time. Got round about 1 am. Rec’d $5 of Alex on wages.

 

5 Cool. Revived early in morning. Uncle & Ruth went to reunion. We went to S.S. & church. Text John 6:55-59. Meeting in P.M. at White S.H. The text Rom 8:19.  At Alex in evening, he did not get home.

6 Warm. I mowed over by George’s in afternoon, hoed potatoes and raked up hay. Alex came home about 6. Up home in the evening. Father took Sam and $200 and gave Abel back his horses.

7 Hot. Finished mowing that lot in forenoon and drew in in afternoon. Hawley helped us. Raked up hay at night. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

8 Hay got wet in the night. Hoed potatoes a while and then stirred up the hay. Got in 2 loads and part of the rest put up when it rained very hard. Line backed heifer was to bull again. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

9 Worked around in forenoon. Stirred up hay, ground sections etc. P.M. mowed below the oats, cocked up the rest of the hay. Wrote to Marion in the evening.

10 In the forenoon James & I worked on the road. In P.M. opened part of the hay just before a heavy shower. Put ashes on corn. Andrew down in the evening, had a good sing.

11 Rainy. Split wood etc. Took Aunt T & Ruth up to Mr. McNab’s. P.M. fixed water trough. Went after folks, Julia Mc rode home with us. Uncle Alex got 2 small pigs.

12 Showery. Attended S.S. & church, not many out. Text Rev 10:6. Went up to Anna’s to dinner. Ruth and El drove over the carriage to Red S. H. Text – Eph 6:10. Write to Libbie in evening.

13 Showery till middle of afternoon and then cleared off. Worked around water trough, shook out hay, sprouted potatoes etc. Went up home in evening.

14 Mowed in the barn lot in forenoon. In afternoon made a stack and got in hay below the oats. Did not go anywhere in the evening.

15 Mowed sidehill by barn in afternoon. Got in what mowed yesterday and cocked up what mowed this forenoon. Nowhere in evening. Very warm.

16 Cloudy. Plowed out potatoes and hoed them. Did not do anything at haying. Went up home in evening. Ruth and McLaury girls there. Ruth stayed all night.

17 Pleasant. Uncle Alex went to Owego. Mowed the rough piece in barn lot. In afternoon drew in hay & raked and cocked what we cut in A.M. Up to store in evening. Read a letter from Alice.

18 Finished mowing rough piece. I drew in four loads and cocked what was down. James very tired. Went up to McLaury’s in evening to sing. Andrew, Anna etc. there. Walked over with Alice.

19 Warm. Went to S.S. and church. Text 1 Peter 5:7. At H meeting at White S.H., Andrew, Ruth and I went over to Treadwell’s in evening to sing. I stopped at  home to dinner, also Anna & Irvin. Father’s 82 birthday.

20 Cloudy & hot. Drew in hay in forenoon and in afternoon. Plowed out corn. Did not go anywhere in evening. A few light showers in the afternoon.

21 Cloudy in morning. Hoed most of forenoon. Alex went to Towanda. In afternoon finished mowing in barn lot. Went up home in evening.

22 Cut the grass back of oats. In afternoon drew in the hay in the barn lot. Went up home in evening. Charles came just as I got back.

23 Cut grass on side hill in the afternoon. Drew in hay back of oats and raked and cocked that on side hill. Went up home to see about selling Charlie.

24 Wrote to Charles to tell him he could have Charlie. Alex went to Owego. Cut the rall by horse barn and drew in off the hill. Raked and cocked what cut in forenoon. Nowhere in evening.

25 Pleasant. Mowed back of George’s in afternoon. Hawley helped up get in hay in the lot by horse barn and over by George’s. Cocked up what was not fit to go etc. Went to McLaury’s in evening.

26 James helped do the chores. Went to church & S.S. Abbie L. here. Text 1 John 5:4. Went to Red S.H. to meeting. Did not hear text. Rained a little. Went home in evening.

27 Cloudy. We hoed corn in forenoon & in afternoon. Got in what hay we had down.

28 Finished hoeing corn and plowed out part of the potatoes again. It rained so we had to stop. Up  home in the evening. Little heifer had a calf. I stayed all night. Rec’d a letter from Marion.

29 Picked stones in forenoon & in afternoon. Finished mowing. Geo Griswold & Julia, Maria & Mary at Uncles.

30 Picked stones in forenoon & in afternoon. Finished haying. James time out tonight. I went up home to the ready to start for Elmira in morning. Rec’d $4.59 of Alex.

31 Started for Owego at 4:30. Andrew took me to Crawford’s. Walked to Owego from there in 2 hrs 7 min. Bought a locket. In time for train. Dr. and I went to Horseheads to see Ball play.

Aug 1 Rainy. Went down town in afternoon. Got my boot mended. Also 3 royal

2 I went to 2nd Presbyterian church with the Soltbens. Quick & heavy shower in evening. Went to the Baptist church.

3 Came to Owego on the morn. Took dinner at the Ahwaga. Had to walk home. Stopped at Julia’s, Maria’s, Mary’s and Anna’s. Stayed at home all night.

4 Got up early and went down to Alex. Picked stones back of George’s. Charles came after after we were in bed.

5 Pleasant. I helped our folks. Haying got along well.  Had Skip to rake with. Drew in 8 loads.

6 Cut swale grass for bedding in forenoon & in afternoon. Hoed potatoes.

7 Alex went to Binghamton & back. I drew in swale grass & finished hoeing potatoes and then drew stones. Looked like rain all day. Up home in evening.

8 Drew stones. The girls went up to see Aunt Betsy. Called at our house etc.

9 Went to meeting & S.S. They concluded to buy the melodian for $25. Text 1st John 3:5. P.M. meeting at Red S.H. text Jude 1:21. Andrew down in evening.

10 In the fore pulled the peas etc. P.M. went up and got the sled and drew out wood. Ruth up to our house. Alex went up in the evening. Florence and Mattie over. A light shower.

11 Pleasant. I drew out wood in afternoon. Drew in grass from pea ground, fixed fence, greased wagon etc. Mother and Andrew down in evening.

12 Drew out wood. Very warm. Ruth up to our house. Our folks finished haying. Quite a shower in the evening.

13 I went to Owego with Ruth’s furniture. Got back at 7:30 P.M. Charles not at home. Stopped a few minutes at Aunt Susan’s. Cool.

14 I drew out wood. John Victor & Louis Piollet came up, also Victor Wiceman. We went over to George’s in evening.

15 The boys started back in the morning. I fixed the brush fence & hunted cattle in afternoon. Drew out the last of he wood up home in evening,

16 I went up to church & S.S. Alex did not go. Text Prov 3:9-10. Took up collection to pay for melodion. Raised $13.64. Meeting at White S. H.. A good number out. I went home in evening. Dimon came down with me.

17 I cut rowen in front of shop. Cut this as put up grass. Charles came about dark.

18 Uncle & Charles went oven to peat swamp. Helped them off. Cut oats by hemlock trees. Cut rowen by the wagon house. Up to Mr. Young’s in the evening.

19 Charles & Ruth went away. I drew out rails. Cocked up the grass near the wagon house.

20 Very warm. I finished drawing out rails. Bound up nearly all the oats by hemlock so to draw in the rowen.

21 Warm. Worked in the garden. Cut small piece of oats back of Geo’s. Finished binding & drawing I oats by hemlocks. Shower in the evening. Went over to Sidney’s after force pump. Stopped to singing school.

22 Split up maple log at the door. Got some stringers and made a bridge across the creek to go up to the barn. At home in evening.

5 In the evening Clifford, Andrew & I went up to Dunham’s to a dance. Not many there.

6 Went to Little Meadows to Orrin’s exhibition. Em Kimball invited us to a party at their house next Tuesday evening. I asked Nett to go with me.

7 Up home a while in the evening. Went home about 11. Andrew out to South Owego to singing school.

8 Went to S.S. & church. Mr. Billsby preached. Meeting at White S.H. at 3 P.M. Went and took Emma Kimball riding and stayed awhile afterwards. Got home about 11.

9 A party at Geo Tallmadge. Clifford went but I did not. Only a few there. I went to bed about 7.

10 Cleaned up oats etc. Andrew and Irvin went to Owego with pigs. Warren Young came out with them and went down to the party with us. I went for Nett Dennison. Had a good time. Home about 2 am.

11 In the evening went to Harry Barnes to a dance. I took Emma Kimball. Andrew took Edna Garfield. We had a first rate time. I got home at 4:15. The night was quite cold.

 

12 Rather sleepy. Drew wood, covered the potatoes, drew leaves etc. In the evening settled with Alex. Went home. Went to bed about 10.

13 Cold. Worked around in afternoon. Made a fence around the barn. Left Uncle Alex. Went up to see Anna. Went home, packed my trunk etc. Went to bed about 2 am.

14 Andrew took me to Owego. Took 12:28 train. Had to wait 2 hrs at Sayre. Walked to Athens. Arrived at Ulster at 4, got a ride part way. Met Mr. Dixon. He brought up my trunk.

15 Cold in the morning. I went to church. Warmer in afternoon. Text Gen 35:11. Read and slept in afternoon. Went to bed about 9.

16 Not very cold. Commenced school. Had 33 scholars. Went to Mr. Lewis’. In the evening went to see a steam mill run and helped carry off the lumber. Went to bed about 9.

 

17 Got up about 7. Rained some all day. I went to Mr. Lewis’. So rainy there was not any singing school. Wrote to Andrew and sent it to the office.

 

18 A little cooler but did not freeze any. Had one new scholar to day. Went to Mr. Lewis’ at night. Went to bed a little after 8, not much like one week ago tonight.

19 Frozen quite hard but pleasant through the day. Went to Mr. Lewis’ at night. Had chestnuts, apples & cider in the evening. Went to bed early. Very pleasant in the evening.

20 Snowed quite fast nearly all the forenoon. Not very cold in the afternoon. Went to Mr. Lewis’ at night. Commenced a letter to Anna at the school house and wrote to Lib & Uncle Alex in the evening.

21 Cold. I rode to Towanda with Mr. Dixon. I got my boots mended for $1.28. Bought a package of stamped envelopes and mailed my letters. I saw Mr. Young and several others that I knew.

22 Cold but got warmer towards noon and snowed in the afternoon and turned to rain in the evening. I went to Methodist meeting at 2:30. Wrote to Emma Kimball in the afternoon and evening.

23 Warm & muddy. Rained nearly all the forenoon. Some of the time quite fast. 39 scholars on the roll, 37 present. I went to Mr. Pearsall’s at night. Sent my letters to the office by a man going to Towanda.

24 Cold and windy. Kept several scholars after school. Went to Mr. Pearsall’s. Went to singing school, had a very good time. Very cold in the evening.

25 Cold but pleasant. I went to Mr. Pearsall’s at night. After school, wrote part of a letter to Andrew. Mr. Dixon brought up a letter from him inclining one from Lib. Mr Cordner asked me to go there net week.

26 Thanksgiving. My fire went out in the morning. Sent my letter to the office. Went to Mr. Dixon’s to dinner. Kept several scholars after school. Went to  Mr. Pearsall’s at night.

27 Windy. At the school house early. Warm in the afternoon. I went to Mr. Dixon’s at night. Wrote a letter to Clifford. Kept several scholars after school. Did not get the house swept till dark.

28 Frozen some, but not very cold. Started for Towanda on foot but got a ride with Mr.

?Leions? Called on Dorcas, saw Mary in town and walked over with her. She took me up to Mr. King’s. I asked Soph if I might come to see her. Went back to Mr. Morgans. Gab & Soph there grange. 

29 Helped Mr. Morgan do up the chores. Went to meeting. After dinner Mr. Morgan brought me as far as I come on the Ulster road. Got to Mr. Dixon’s just before dark.

30 Very cold. I had 8 new scholars making 50 in all. It snowed some in the forenoon. I went to Mr. Cordnar’s to stay all night. Had plenty of apples and cider. Had a shirt and pair of cuffs washed at Mr. Dixon’s.

1 Cold. I went down for my dinner at noon. They had the singing school in the school house. I rec’d a letter from Lib. Decided to commence school earlier. Went to Mr. Cordnar’s

2 Warmer. Got to the school house early. Every scholar on the roll present (51). I was very tired at night. Went down to dinner in the evening. Mr. Cordmar & I went up to John Sinclair’s.

3 Did not freeze any. Got a whip. My fire went out. Had one new scholar. Warm all day. Went to Mr. Cordmar’s. John Sinclair’s wife there.

4 Quite cold in the morning but thawed through the day. I kept several large girls after school. Rec’d a letter from Anna and from Em Kimball. Went to Cordmar’s. Wrote to Anna & Irvin in the evening. Quite cold.

5 Cold. Went up to Mr. Dixon’s. Helped draw wood. Wrote a letter to Uncle Alex. Fixed a rubber for blackboard. Helped cut wood to last over Sundday. In the evening went to Ulster with Dixon. Rec’d a letter from Alex and mailed mine.

6 Warm and rained a little nearly all day. Mr. Dixon & I went to the school house to meeting. The rain turned to snow in the evening. Went to bed about 9:30.

7 Not very cold and quite muddy at night. Had 2 new scholars. Did not sweep the school house at night. Went to Mr. Moore’s

8 Cold all day. Did not get to the school house very early and found the fire nearly out & the house to sweep. Played ball at noon. Went to John Sinclair’s to supper. Went to singing school in the evening & up to Mr. Moore’s

9 Cold. My fire went out. Wrote to father at noon. Dark when I left the school house. I went to Mr. Moore’s to stay all night.

10 Did not get up very early. Not very cold. Played ball at noon. Got a chance in the forenoon to send father’s letter to Towanda. Went to Mr. Moore’s. Wrote to Emma Kimball in the evening.

11 Sent Em’s letter to the office by Mr. Moore. Kept Aggie ?Clock? After school. Went to Mr. Dixon’s after school.

12 Cold. Went to Ulster with Mr. Dixon. Too late for the train. Walked to Towanda. Went in the jail. Rec’d a letter from Sophia. Met Mr. White’s folks. Went over home with them.

13 Went down to the brick to meeting. Went down to Mr. Piollet’s to dinner. John took me about a mile above Towanda. Drove up to Mr. Morgan’s a few minutes. Got to Mr. Dixon’s about 6:30.

14 Rained in the night. Cold in the morning and getting colder all day. I had 54 scholars. 3 new ones. Went to Mr. Kennedy’s. Wrote to Lib in the evening.

15 Very cold. I played ball at noon. Had a number of scholars after school. Singing school in the evening. I paid 75¢. Company at Mr. Kennedy’s. Did not go to bed till after 12.

16 Not quite so cold, but still quite cold. Played ball at noon. Went to Mr. Kennedy’s at night. Wrote to Andrew in the evening.

17 Went to Mr. Kennedy’s at night. Was going to write a letter but Sarah had the pen and I did not.

18 Cold. Wrote to Mary Morgan before school. Sent it to Towanda by Mr. McMorran. Went to Mr. Kennedy’s. Emma at home.

19 Went to Towanda with Mr. Kennedy. Went over to Mr. Dixon’s to fix up. Saw Philemon Arnold. Got back about dark. Did not get any letters.

20 Snowed some nearly all day. I went up and opened the school house but did not go to meeting. Company at Mr. Kennedy’s in the afternoon and evening. Did not go to bed till nearly 12.

21 Cold. Got to the school house early and built a fire the went to Mr. Dixon’s and changed my clothes. Had 1 shirt, a handkerchief and 1 pair stockings washed. Went to Mr. Gilmour’s at night.

22 Windy. Got to the school house early. Quite full school. Did not sweep the house at night. Went to bed early. Not very cold.

23 Mild. Got to the school house early. Swept. Had a bad headache. Went home with the scholars. Went to bed 8:30. Debate at the Pail Factory but did not go.

24 Not very cold. Got to school house about 8. Swept out the house. Had a little head ache. Went to the Howie’s to supper. Took the 8 o’clock train for Elmira. Got there a little after 9. Rec’d a letter from Alex.

25 Christmas. Quite cold. Went down town with Dr. in the morning. Went to Mr. Stephen’s to dinner. Went down to Mr. Cooley’s and called on Ella Harris. Went down to fire in the evening.

 

26 Not very cold. Went down town with Dr. in the forenoon. Came down to Ulster in the evening. Got up to Mr. Howie’s a little before 8.

27 Pleasant & quite warm. Went to church and went home with Mr. Dixon. Thawed quite fast in afternoon. Did not go to bed till 10.

28 Rainy. Did not have as many scholars as usual. Went to Mr. Moore’s to stay all night. Rained fast in the evening.

29 Had breakfast before light. Very muddy. Quite small school. Got colder towards night. Singing school in the evening. Frozen hard.

30 Cold. Small school. Sarah Ann Lewis married today. Went to Mr. Moore’s. Sung some in the evening. Very cold.

31 I Think the coldest morning this winter. Had a good deal of trouble with the fire in the morning. Had quite a full school. Went to Mr. Moore’s.

Happy New Year. I taught school. Had a little over 30 scholars. Quite cold in the evening. I went to Mr. Moore’s. Finished making out my first month’s report. Went over to Mr. Dixon’s in the evening and changed my clothes. Mr. Moore’s folks in bed before got back.

2 Hail & coarse snow in the morning. Had breakfast before light. Went down to Ulster in the morning and got an order. The treasurer in Towanda. Rec’d a letter from Em and from Susie H. Went to Towanda on 10 oclock train. Got my money on order. Got my boots fixed. Went over to Piollet’s. Heard that Uncle Alex died last Thursday. Went up home with Jo Piollet.

3 Helped do the chores. Lib and I went down to Uncle Alex and then I took her up to Mr. Young’s to see Anna’s baby which was born last Wednesday night. I went to meeting. Communion today. Went down to Uncle Alex in the evening.

4 Took care of the horses. Took Piollet’s horses down. The Dr. came about 9:30. The funeral at 11. I drove Piollet’s team to the funeral and carried Aunt Theresa, Ruth & Ella. Went down to diner. After dinner we looked through the safe. Andrew and Father down.

5 Snowed some. Father & I went down to Uncle Alex. Piollet and I looked over the papers again. Found several more than last night. Went home after dinner. Started back at 3:15. Got to Piollet’s 6:15. Got supper there. Took the train and came to Ulster. Got to Mr. Dixon’s at 9:15.

6 Arose early. Went to the school house and then built a fire and went up as far as Mr. Moore’s and McMorran then back and over to Vandykes to let them know I was back. Had quite a full school. Very cold. Went to  Mr. Pollock’s at night.

7 Not quite so cold. Snowed a little in the night. Got up early. Had a good school. Kept several scholars after school. It commenced snowing about 3 in P.M. Went to Mr. Pollock’s.

8 Not snow enough to make very good sleighing. Got my supper at Mr. Pollock’sand went down to Towanda on the train. Went over to Piollet’s. Stopped at Mr. Morgan’s. Mr. Piollet’s boys out riding.

9 Stayed at Mr. Piollet’s till after dinner then went up to Mr. Morgan’s. Stayed there till after dark then went down to Piollet’s and took the train for Ulster. Stopped at Mr. Howies all night. The thermometer about 3 degrees below zero.

 

10 Very cold. About 14 below zero. Did not go to meeting. Stayed at Mr. Howie’s till about 3:30 P.M. then went up to Mr. Dixon’s.

 

 

11 Cold. Got a good fire at the school house early. Had a full school. Went to Mr. Vandyke’s to board. Andrew came up to see me about 7. He brought Aunt Theresa to Towanda. We sung and had a good time in the evening.

12 Cold. Andrew & I took care of the horses & then went to the school house. Had a full school. Andrew stayed till recess in forenoon. Singing school in the evening, the last one. A large crowd. I went to Mr. Vandyke’s.

13 Not very cold. Hail and Rain in the morning. Had a full school. Forbid whispering. Rode down hill two or three times at noon. Quite windy at night. Went to Mr. Vandyke’s at night. Went to bed about 9. Sewed 2 gallow buttons on my pants.

14 Cold and very windy. My fire nearly out. A full school. Rode down hill at noon. Rob Watson & some one else at school in afternoon. Went to Mr. VanDyke’s.

15 Cold. Had a full school. Choosed sides in the afternoon. Bob Watson, Will Gibson, Iola ____ at school. Went to Mr. VanDyke’s. Went over to Mr. Dixon’s in the evening and fixed up.

16 James Sinclair and I went to town. Rode with Mr. Nobles. I bought a cap for $.75, a lamp for $1.50, a box of collars and a box of paper. Came back to Mr. VanDyke’s.

 

17 Cold. Went to Towanda to meeting with Mr. VanDyke’s folks. Came back there to dinner. Stayed there till after dark and then went to Mr. Dixon’s to stay all night.

18 Snowed some all the forenoon. Enough snow to make very good sleighing. Had a new scholar (Amanda Lewis). Tonight makes two months. Stayed after school and ruled a sheet for next month. Went to Mrs. Howies.

19 Cold. Had a full school. Commenced my 3rd month. Wrote to mother after school. Went to Mrs. Howie’s. Went to bed early.

20 Cold. A full school. Sent my letter to the office by John Howie. Sprained my wrist at noon. Kept some after school. Went to Mr. Kennedy’s. Went down to the Pail factory to debating school. Got back about 12.

21 Not quite so cold. Had a full school. Kept Wall Lewis after school to spell. Went over to Mr. Dixon’s to dinner. Went to Mrs. Howie’s to stay at night. A donation at Ulster, but I did not go. Did not feel very well.

22 Rainy in the morning but soon turned to snow. Cleared off towards noon and thawed some. Had 51 scholars. Went over to Mr. Dixon’s and dressed up after school and then went to Mrs. Howie’s. Wrote to Susie Harris and Aunt Theresa in the evening.

23 Went to Towanda in th morning. Got a ride from Myer’s mill. Went over to Wysox. Got an Order to send for the Presbyterian for Libbie. Went to Mr. Morgan’s to dinner. Went up to Mr. Spencer’s to stay all night. Went up to Mr. Lent’s in the evening.

 

24 Stormed a little most all day (snow). Stayed at Mr. Spencer’s till nearly noon. Went up to Henry’s and Mr. Bull’s. Came back to Mr. Spencer’s to dinner. He came and brought me as far as Bill Lent’s. I crossed on the ice and came up the R.R. track to hemlock run. Got to Mrs. Howies at 5:30

25 Cold & windy. Went to the school house and built a fire and went to Mr. Dixon’s and changed my clothes. Had 50 scholars. Went to Mrs. Brook’s at night. I commenced reading David Copperfield.

 

 

26 Very cold. Got to the school house early. Had a full school. Wrote to Andrew after school. Went to Mrs. Brooks after school. Henry Heath up with his wife in the morning.

27 Cold in the morning but grew milder in the afternoon. Had 48 scholars. Kept quite a number after school. Went to Mr. Dixon’s. Mr. Irwin’s folks and Howie’s there. Went to bed about 2.

28 Very hoarse all day. Rained and hailed part of the day. Had a full school. Went to Mrs. Brooks’. Went to bed early and slept all night.

29 My fire nearly out. A little colder than yesterday but not very cold. Very hoarse. Rec’d a letter from Andrew saying that Uncle Alex sale was Tuesday. Went to Mrs. Brooks’ at night. Mr. & Mrs. VanDyke & Susie there. It snowed very fast in the evening.

30 I did not feel very well. Went down to Mr. Dixon’s and dressed up. Tried to get a ride to Towanda but could not. After dinner went down to Ulster. Rec’d a postal card from Andrew. Came back to Mr. Dixon’s and stayed all night.

Jan 31 Snowed some in the forenoon. Mr. Dixon started home with me a little before noon. We went through Sheshequin. Got home about 5. Went to meeting in the evening. Lottie Manning went home with us.

1 Cold. I went down to L.M. and invited a few up to our house in the evening. Stopped to see Aunt Theresa. John Dacy dead. Mr. Dixon & I went to Mr. Young’s, down to L.M. etc. I went for Emma Kimball & Andrew for Julia McLaury in the evening. We danced. Got around home about 3.

2 Went down to Uncle Alex sale. I acted as Clerk. Mr. Dixon went home without me. We got through selling about dark. I was very tired. Went over to Treadwell’s a little while.

3 Rained in the forenoon & thawed very fast. I went down and coppied the result of the sale etc. Went home to dinner. About 4 started for Wysox with Piollet. The road full of slush and water. Got to Piollet’s about 7. Stayed there all night. We played eucher. Went to bed about 12.

4 Stayed around the store till noon then went up with Mr. White. Took dinner there then went up to school. Went to Mr. King’s to stay all night. Sophia not at home. Very cold and windy.

5 Stayed at Mr. King’s till afternoon. Went out and stopped at school. Went down to Mr. White’s to stay all night. Alice and I went up to Mr. Lent’s in the evening.

6 Stayed at Mr. White’s till nearly noon. Wrote to Aunt Polly, cousin Thomas & sent an Order for the Presbyterian for Lib. Went down to Piollet’s to dinner. Went to Mr. Morgan’s and from there to Towanda. Looked at inventory of Uncle Alex things. Went up to Mr. Dixon’s. Had to walk. Very cold.

 

7 Cold. Did not get up very early. Went to meeting at the church. Read nearly all the afternoon when I was not asleep.

8 Cold. Got to the school house early. The scholars not very early. Had 44. Went to Mr. Clough’s at night. A cold night.

9 Very cold. The coldest at the school house of any day this winter. Had 45 scholars. Two new ones (Rob Watson and Will Gibson). Went to Mr. Clough’s. They met at the school house in the evening and organized a debating school.

10 Cold but not so cold as yesterday. Wrote to Andrew. Went to Mr. Clough’s.

11 Snowed very fast in the forenoon. The heaviest fall of snow we have had this winter. Did not have a very large school. Went to Mr. Clough’s. Pleasant but cold.

12 Very cold. My fire nearly out. Not a very full school. The snow drifted some in places. I expected to have a spelling school tonight but was so bad going I did not. Kept several after school. Went to Mr. Dixon’s and changed my clothes and got supper. There went to Mr. Clough’s to stay all night.

13 Very cold. I went to Towanda and attended the teachers association in the forenoon. Took dinner with Mr. ____ at the Institute. In the afternoon stayed around town till night. Saw Mary Morgan & Mr. Morgan. Rode up part way with John Sinclair then walked to Ulster. Rec’d a letter from Susie Harris & 2 valentines. Rode up to Mr Clough’s with Dixon.

 

14 Cold. Did not get up very early. Not feeling very well. Went to meeting at the school house. In the evening went over to Mr. Dixon’s to stay all night. Stopped a few minutes at John Howie’s

 

15 Cold as usual. Mr. Keeney visited the school about the middle of the forenoon. I went to Mr. Dixon’s with him to dinner. He came back and stayed the afternoon. I went to Mr. Heath’s to board.

 

16 Cold. Rode to school with Mr. Heath. Got there about 7. After school Mr. Clough came and took me to Ulster to vote. I came back to debating school. Wrote to Emma Kimball & rec’d a letter from Uncle Henry Merrill. Went to Mr. Heath’s after debate.

17 Not quite so cold. Did not get to the school house very early. My fire out. Went to Mr. Moore’s to supper. Had a spelling school in the evening. Not a great many out but we had a good time. Went to Mr. Heath’s after spelling school.

18 Cold. Got to the school house about 7. Had a good fire. Wrote to Andrew and sent it to the Office by Rob Moore. A very pleasant day. Kept some scholars after school. Whipped Claude Vincent. Played the fife for theme to drum in the evening.

19 Not quite so cold. Rode up to Mr. Heath’s after school with Henry. Looked like a storm in the evening.

20 Went to Towanda. Rode to Myers Mill with Mr. Heath. Rode over to Wysox with Mr. White. Got 2 speakers in town. It commenced snowing about 9 and snowed all day. Stopped at Mr. Morgan’s & then went up to Mr. King’s. Stayed there all night.

 

21 Not very cold. Stayed at Mr. King’s till after noon. I asked Sophia to go up home with Gab, Mary Morgan and myself next Friday. She promised to go. Gab brought me part way up to my school. Stopped at Mr. Morgan’s and wrote to Andrew. Mailed it in Towanda. Came up to Mr. Dixon’s. Stopped at Mr. VanDyke’s a few minutes.

 

 

22 Not very cold. Had 43 or 44 scholars. Went to Mrs. Gibson’s at night. Commenced making out my second months report after school. Went to bed about 9. It thawed a good deal through the day.

23 Warm. Had 40 scholars. Kept some of them in part of the noon time for not getting in sooner at recess yesterday. Julia Clough at school in the afternoon. Very wet. Bad walking at night. I went to debating school. Boarding at Mrs. Gibson’s.

24 Still thawing. Had 44 scholars The last day of my third month. Not quite as bad going as last night. Went to Mrs. Gibson’s. Will Gibson went to a party.

25 Warm and foggy. Rained a very little in the morning. Not a very full school. Kept several scholars after school. Went to Mrs. Gibson’s at night. Rained hard after school when I was going to my boarding place. It turned cold about dark.

26 Frozen quite hard. Had quite a full school. Went to Mrs. Gibson’s after school. In the evening went to Oak Hill to debate. It snowed in the evening. Rec’d a programme of Head’s Exhibition.

27 Snowed some. Cold and windy. After dinner went to Ulster. Rec’d a postal card from Andrew. Bought a new pair of rubbers. Ate supper at Mr. Clough’s. Went back to Mrs. Gibson’s to stay at night.

Feb 28 Cold and windy. I did not  hardly go out of the house all day.

1 Snowed fast. I went over to Mr. Dixon’s and changed my clothes. Had 29 scholars. Went to Mr. Wm Lewis to board. Snowed some nearly all day. Rained some in the evening Wrote to Mary Morgan in the evening. Went o bed about 8.

2 Not very cold. My fire did not start very well. Had 42 scholars. Went to debating school in the evening. Had a good time.

3 Neither very cold or warm. Had 45 scholars. Expected to have a spelling school in the evening but it commenced snowing about noon and snowed all the afternoon and evening. Had the scholars practice their pieces in the afternoon. I went over to Mr. Vincent & John Howie’s to see if I had a letter. Stayed at Mr. Lewis’

4 Not very cold but not thawing much. Went to Mr. Lewis’. Went down to Ulster to the Office but did not get a letter. Rode back with Mr Vincent.

5 Did not thaw much. Had school out at 3 and went to Ulster and took the train for Wysox. Arrived there at 4:30. Went to Mr. Morgan’s for the evening. Took the horse and cutter and Mary and I went up to Mr. King’s. None of the young folks at home but Sophia.

6 Thawed considerable. I stayed at the Morgan’s till after noon and then went to Mr. Piollet’s. They went to the grange and Hilster and played eucher and then I read. Did not go to bed till 12.

 

7 Colder. I did not get up very early. Went to the brick church to Sunday school and meeting. It was communion. Saw Abbie Lent. Came back to Mr. Piollet’s to dinner and stayed all night. It snowed about a foot in the afternoon and evening which makes a heavy body of snow on the ground.

 

8 Arose at 6. John took me to the bridge in a cutter. About 1 foot of snow. The train was ½ hour late in starting. Got to Ulster a little before 8. Walked up as far as Mr. Clough’s and then got a ride with Mr. J. T. Howie. Had over 30 scholars. Went to Mr. Dixon’s.

9 Went to Mr. Dixon’s to supper. Went to debating school. Went to Mr. Gilmour’s to stay at night.

10 I had a spelling school in the evening. Went to Mr. Piollet’s.

11 Thawing considerable. I went to Mr. J.T. Howie’s to stay at night. Wrote to Sophia King and went down and put it in the Office.

12 Not feeling very well. Got very tired. Went to J.T. Howie’s.

13 Went to Towanda. Walked down to the R.R. track. I got some cards printed to give to the scholars. Bought two pairs of drawers for $.75. Came back to Mr. Howie’s at night. Mailed a letter to Andrew. Thawing fast. Did not feel very well. Went up to John Howie’s in the evening.

 

14 Thawing and foggy. I felt very bad all day. Did not go to meeting. Had a terrible head ache. Went to bed early.

15 Felt very bad. Had over 40 scholars. The roads very full of water. Foggy in the morning. Layed down in the school house and slept nearly an hour after school. Did not eat any dinner and scarcely any supper. Went to bed early

16 Pleasant over head but very bad walking. I felt a great deal better. Had about 35 scholars. Mrs. Sinclair at the school in the afternoon. Went to Mr. Vincent’s. Went to debating school in the evening. Growing colder.

17 Quite cold. I felt about the same. Had a full school. Went to Will Howie’s to board. Rec’d a letter from Em Kimball. Rec’d an invitation to a party at Will Howie’s tomorrow evening. Went to bed early. Very cold in the evening.

18 Cold. Had a full school. Went to Mr Dixon’s after school. Got my supper and dressed up and then went to the party. Had a very good time but was so hoarse that I could not hardly speak loud. Went to bed about 3. Stayed at Will’s.

19 Not so cold. I got up about 10 minutes to 8. Got to the school house and had a good fire when school called. Had a full school. Was very hoarse and got tired by night.

20 Snowed in the forenoon enough to make some sleighing. I went to Ulster and stayed around there till nearly 4 P.M. Rode up with J.T. Howie. Stayed at Will’s. Quite cold.

 

21 Cold. I did not go to meeting but stayed at Will’s all day. In the evening went over to Mr. Dixon’s and stayed all night.

22 Cold and pleasant. Did not have a very full school on account of a birthday party. Went to Mr. Gilmour’s. The thermometer said to have been from 7-10 below this morning.

23 Cold. Not a very full school. Went to Mr. VanDyke’s. Worked on my report after school. Went to bed about 9.

24 Rather late getting started. Cold. Had a full school. Stayed and worked at my report after school.

Diary writer = George Fahnestock Dewing, b. Apr 26, 1846 in Warren Township, d. there Mar 24, 1917. Married Abigail G. Lent Mar 22, 1876 in Wysox.

 

He was a school teacher for the 1873-1874 school year around the Wysox area. (it was a 4 month Winter School)

His work for Uncle Alex was in Warrenham.

His 1875 school year was on Moore’s Hill in Ulster.

Home is his parents house in the same location as on the 1858 Beer’s atlas.

When he is home, church is the Warren Presbyterian Church. He and his whole family joined Jan 9, 1859. “

Can you change that to read “When he is home, church is the Warren Presbyterian Church. His father Andrew, and uncles Alexander and Edward Dewing were founding members on Oct 13, 1840.

After this diary ends he becomes the owner of Alex Dewing’s farm which is still in the family today. Andy & Sally Dewing live there currently and make maple syrup under the name Dewy Meadows Maple Farm.
