Cynthia Melissa Fuller , March 1, 1850- March 20, 1923, dau. of William James Fuller and Cynthia M. Graves Fuller, Ridgebury, PA. Chattie later married a Mr. Brown. Julia was Chattie's little sister, and this was her first diary. Chattie's Diary is in dark italics, and Julia's, for the same day, is in the lighter colored text.
This diary is particularly poignant and emotional as it includes the death of Chattie's older married sister and the conflict with the brother-in-law over custody and care of the sister's young daughter. It gives us a look at the difficult episodes of life that are so often shielded away from us. It is my belief that history should be presented as it is and not sugar coated. In our generation we have to deal with many difficult issues, and it is important for us to understand that none of our problems are new or unique or in any way unusual. Our thanks to the submitter for allowing us to print this diary in its entirety. JAN. 1: Rose at four. JAN. 2: Rose eerily. Made beds picked up the clothes and did the washing. Got breakfast and help get supper. Phine Gusta and Edith are sick. Belle is here yet. Retired eerily

JAN. 3: Rose early expecting to go to Waverly but was disappointed, so I staid at home. Got breakfast washed dishes Ironed. Cleaned my brown dress to have my Photo taken Went down to Aunt Julia’s Belle Gusta and I

JAN. 4: Rose early. Went down Got breakfast, and got ready to go to Waverly Pa PA Belle and I went PA Belle and I had our Photo taken. Got me a collar some Buttons for a Basque. Ruffling &Edging. I went to Mr. Snook and had five teeth out gave him $1.20 one dollar & twenty cents

JAN. 5: Rose at six, came down Got breakfast before Belle and Gusta came down, mopped, did the ironing swept the floors. Made some Jell-cake. Got supper washed the dishes. Belle is going home Saturday Sewed the Buttons on my wrapper. Retired early

JUL. 12: Staid up with Phine again last night no one has been here since Sunday until to day Pa & Ma came over, and the Doctor is here. Dr. Clark came while he was here but went away again. He was to come Monday but did not.
JUL. 13: For the first time in my life have I been insulted. Oh! God have mercy on that person I pray. Except for Phine’s dear sake would I stay I will trust in God through Christ to deliver me and protect me from harm
JUL. 14: Was up again last night I am so worn out I scarcely know which way to turn or what to do Dr. Goodman came on the cars. Was here to supper. He went away about nine oclock to take the cars but soon after came back and said the train had left him. How glad I was. I look at it as the hand of God.
JUL. 15: Lay down awhile and did not get up until Addie and Gusta came. Burge has been mad all day about something. I believe I know. But I will not say. Indeed I know but too well thank God Gusta did come. She is just in time for me.
JUL. 16: Rose from my bed and watched over Phine until Gusta had breakfast ready. After we had got breakfast and got the work did Pa came, and soon after Mr & Mrs ……. came over to see Phine a few moments. Pa went home and I sat up with Phine
JUL. 17: This morning I set …. and baked bread as Gusta would not do it for me. Phine is worse than ever to day. She told me I must take good care of Eda always and to bring her up to mind at the word. The Doctor told her she would be able to go home tomorrow or next day and she is bound to go now.
JUL. 18: Was up alone to night with Phine. Burge laid in the log part and slept. I could scarcely pacify Phine all night last night she was bound and determined to go home. The Doctor promised to come to day or tomorrow he has not been here to day but I hope he will come tomorrow, for she is much worse now.
JUL. 19: Sat with Phine again she is light-headed all night. so determined to go home she got up on the floor and put on her skirt said she was going home a foot Burge went over and gotEda but it did not seem to pacify her. Gusta went back with P.A. and Eda. I was up with her tonight
JUL. 20: Got breakfast for Burge and I. About ten our folks came over after Phine and I. She has been worring all the morning. She is out of her head yet and was until our folks came and said they would take her home with them when they went. Burge would not help lift her in the wagon so Ma Pa and I did it alone
JUL. 21: Mrs Woodard and Mifs Smith were there but they would not lift a finger to help us. She took two naps coming over ate some and took her medicine. It was about two when we reached home. She died last night about twenty minutes past twelve. I believe she is now at rest with God in whom she trusted and in who’s care she entrusted her babe.
JUL. 22: To-day is sad lonesome sorrowful day. Sorrowful because one of our member is gone never more her earthly friends can behold her. But we hope to meet her where we may ever be at rest Where we may not be afraid to converse with each other
JUL. 23: This day we buried our loved sister. He got a horse and Buggy and took the Baby away from us and went alone. How awful it did look. He said he would not bring her back to our house and he ordered me to pack up her things before the funeral so he could take them with him but I would not do it. He kept her away until almost dark and then brought her back God have mercy on his poor soul

AUG. 12: Rose early, and prepared to go to Smithfield with Pa. We met Mr. Webb so we did not have to go to the Center. We went over to Mrs. Jone’s Found Mrs. Jones and Hubert at home but Stella & Mr. Jones had gone away. Had my ring wished on.
AUG. 13: Rose and help do up the work. Washed and dressed Edith Last night I got letter from Stella. Help get dinner and do up the work and wrote a letter to Emma Reyman
AUG. 14: Rose and got ready for school. Burge had to play up nuisance and take Eda off. He took every-thing even to a rag. He told me he would rather be in his place than mine if called upon to leave this world May God have mercy on me
AUG. 15: Staid to Mrs. Griswalds’ last night with Martha Stone. P.A. brought me up and when we past them Mrs. Griswald called to me and wanted me to come there all the week. Went back there again to night. Retired late
AUG. 16: Rose early and made bed and prepared for breakfast. We went up to the school-house and after school went up to Mrs Catchpole’s to stay all night. Acted as if they were tickled to pieces to think I had come there
AUG. 17: Rose quite early and about eight oclock started for school. After school was over I went to Sate Hanlon’s and old Mrs Hanlon went to work and got supper for me and I did not know of it until after I had eaten with Sate. She seemed quite disappointed and reckoned I would not cheat her again
AUG. 18: Went over to prayer meeting and after it was over had an invitation to go to their Sabbath school Picnic next Thursday Went home and found Edith there. He had brought her back
AUG. 19: Heard last night Ed Herman was dead and buried also that Mrs. Aber was dead is buried to day. Mrs Ferris & Mrs Brees were here to day. Received a letter from Emma telling me that she and Lomas were married the 1st of July. She to a Mr. Coffrin and he to Esther Annis. She said I must stay as I now was till I find some one as good as she has got. How can I tell
AUG. 20: Found out that Burge had to carry Edith and top his Tobacco. He could not cradle oats except when she was asleep. She would not stay with Mrs Wands a minute He brought her home sick Went to meeting to-day there were thirty-three persons present
AUG. 21: Rose early and prepared for my last week of school. HE went off to South Creek this morning, but said not a word about taking Edith with him. P.A. brought me up. Pa is so lame he can hardly get up or down. Went to Mrs. Green’s to night
AUG. 22: Rose made bed ate my breakfast and went up to school. After school went down to Mrs. Rightmire’s. They teased me and urged quite hard that I should go with then to the Picnic
AUG. 23: Rose made bed. Ate my breakfast and went up to the school-house and after school went over to Mrs. Webb’s. Just as I turned the corner Mrs. Squire’s called to me. I went down and found Aunt Lib down there. After she went a way I went up to Mr George Webb’s and there met with another invitation to go to the Picnic by he and his wife also. But I think I had not better go.
AUG. 24: Rose and went down to Mrs. Squires. Found the Director did not wish me to teach so Mrs. S- fixed Minnie to go with me to the Picnic. I went and had a first rate time. We went with Mr. Webb’s people. Retired early.
AUG. 25: Rose early. Mr. Wood took us to school on the account of the rain. Came after us at night It has rained all day long. Mrs. Squire’s is very kind to me. Am welcome any time. Retired late
AUG. 26: Last day of school It rained until noon Mrs. Squires Mr Allen and Pa were here this afternoon. Pa brought me some tickets to give the children. They seemed real pleased with them. Ma and Edith came up to Sarahs. Went home after supper
AUG. 27: Rose quite early , and went out help milk cows while Gusta got breakfast. Towards night Burge came and said he should take Eda off one week from to day to stay alone with him
AUG. 28: Rose early. Just day the thrashers came here but I had to do a great Big washing They finished thrashing about the middle of the afternoon and went down to Mrs. Herman’s
AUG. 29: Quite pleasant again to day. Pa is so lame he can hardly walk The boys went up to help Mr Hall thrash. Went to work and cleaned a room up stairs and swept the Hall and clothes press
AUG. 30: Had to do another big washing to day and help do up the work in the house Pa works around a little but not much yet. It is quite warm to day
SEPT. 1: Did a large ironing to day besides other work. Washed dishes Made beds, swept the floors, skimmed the milk. Milked the cows or help do it. Retired late
SEPT. 2: Had to work to day like a good fellow baking, mopping, washing and other things besides. It was quite pleasant all day Heard that the raising of the Soldiers Monument is to be the fourteenth of this month.
SEPT. 3: Rose and help milk. After breakfast put the house in order and got ready and went to church. Burge came to take Eda off. When I went out to milk he took her up to Mr. Hall’s kept her to after dark then told them he had made me cry long enough so he would bring her back
SEPT. 4: Rose and after milking and helping do the work I did out a washing. Got supper and after we had eaten went out and help the boys milk the cows
SEPT. 5: Got up went out and help milk and Gusta got breakfast. Help do up the morning work and then went to ironing. Help get dinner and supper and wash the dishes and help milk
SEPT.6: Addie brought me a letter from Belle. Had a small washing to do for Edith. Mrs Brees came here and brought dinner for the men that are at work in the tobacco. Uncle Dave is here to work for Pa
SEPT. 7: Got the work out of the way quite early Mrs Brees came here again before I got the dinner going hardly After dinner she helps in the tobacco. Help get supper and then help milk
SEPT. 8: Mrs Stevens brought Mrs Brees’ provisions up here for us to get dinner for the men. said that Mrs Brees wanted her to but she was going up on the hill visiting so we got dinner for six men and a boy
SEPT. 9: Rose early and help milk as usual then went to work and did up the morning’s work and got dinner and after we eat Pa and Ma got ready and about four oclock they started for Quarterly meeting upon Thompson Hill
SEPT. 10: Rose and got breakfast while the boys milked. He came here while we were eating but would not eat with us but after I went down cellar Gusta said he set down in my place to eat. He cut the boy’s hair for them
SEPT. 11: Yesterday he asked me to be his, or the next thing to it & Phine has not been gone hardly two months Oh! what did he care for that dear girl. Did the washing to day besides other work
SEPT. 12: Rose and help get ready to go to Waverly. Ma Pa and Edith and I went We had Eda’s Pictures taken. Got Ma and I a Black dress three pair of stockings a box of cuffs and collars
SEPT. 13: Worked all day quite hard Tried to get us some Hats yesterday but could find none that suited me so did not purchase. The boys got Or Cooper’s platform wagon for us to go to Smithfield tomorrow
SEPT. 14: Rose early and started for Smithfield to the raising of the soldiers’ monument. But it did not amount to much. After part of the Performance was over Mr. Jones’ people went home and we went them & from there home
SEPT. 15: Rose and help get breakfast and do up the work then went to washing He came here pouting around for a while and then went off. It rained so he could take Eda Help get supper and do the work
SEPT. 16: Mr & Mrs Sisson staid here last night. They went away after breakfast. Rinsed the clothes and hung them up Help do the Saturday’s work and get our meals and wash the dishes
SEPT. 17: Today he came and took Eda away over to South Creek and no one to take care of her but him. It is perfectly awful his usage of that innocent child. He must answer for it at the last great day.
SEPT. 18: Did out a large washing after breakfast and the work was did, no I did not wash because we had men to wait on. Burge had to carry Eda and cut tobacco. Brought her to his mothers to night
SEPT. 19: Went off before day Magg would not go with him so he had to leave the Baby there. Uncle Dave talks of moving down in the other house until Mr Stevens moves out Worked all day at some thing or other
SEPT. 20: Uncle Dave intended to move to day but Mr Stevens said they were going to move next week so he thought he would wait until then. Gathered some Butternuts this week
SEPT. 21: Did out a large washing this day and then got ready took Mrs Hermans dress home and then went up to Centerville went to the Office and got Eda’s Photo then went to Mr Ferris’ and staid until the boys and Gusta came
SEPT. 22: Yesterday Ma went down to see if Mrs Wans would let Eda come up a little while but she said Burge did not want her to go out of the house. She hung tight to Ma’s neck and cried all the time when Ma got up to go home Mrs Wans took her out of Ma’s arms by force
SEPT. 23: Burge brought her back yesterday and said she might stay that day. He came after dark ordered Ma not to put her to bed (For she was asleep) so ma dressed her feet again put her cloak on and then set her on the floor till most nine oclock and then said he would leave her until tomorrow morning if some of us would take her and put her to bed. P.A. went down the road after a cradle he had used of Pa’s and he gave P.A. a box in which was a Breast pin that was Phine’s and on opening it found it contained a letter telling me to meet him to Mr Halls and go with him & be Eda’s mother saying it was Phines request. Friday night he denied it. But I know it was not her choice in the light he views it. Oh! God may it never be
SEPT. 24: He came here to day and prayed on ask the privilege to do so afterwards we had a talk and then he left Eda again for two weeks
SEPT. 25: Prepared for the first day of school on Green Mountain. They did not hear of it so I did not have but six scholars to day. After school went down to Jerome Evan’s to stay all night
SEPT. 26: Rose and made a bed and after breakfast I went to the school-house and built a fire. Had eight scholars to day. After school went back to Mr. Evan’s and staid all night again
SEPT. 27: Made a bed. Went up to school, kindled a fire. Had ten scholars Swept the floor. After school went up to Harvey Fay’s to stay with Anna. Retired quite late
SEPT. 28: Made bed went down to the school-house and kindled a fire Have twelve scholars. I have partly made my over-skirt to my black dress. Went to Mr Fay’s again last night

DEC. 23 & 24: Ma finished my cloak for me while I was getting ready and after dinner PA Ett Addie Gusta and I started for Smithfield in the sleigh and up by Mr Klines’ shop …. Owens horses ran away and came up behind us and just as I looked around they turned out up the road. One horse just grazing my cloak as he passed. It split the end board of the rear seat right off apart of it and also a part of the board on the side of the Box. We came over to go to meeting but the sleighing has all gone off. We staid to Aunt Hatt’s last night. About noon we went over to Mr Jones to get a wagon but could not get it so we went as far as Uncle Arnold’s and got his Democrat. I think the young folks acted most awful cool. I know I have done nothing to deserve such treatment at their hands but so it is with the world now, you know not who to call friend. But I wish I knew what they meant by it. Perhaps sometime I shall know

DEC. 30: Rose early and puttering around all day at first one thing an then another preparing for New Years. Pa and Ma went up to Aunt Eunice’s to day and stayed all day . Addie is with us again to day
DEC. 31: Rose quite early. Eda is down to Mrs Wans or Swan’s whatever her name is. P.A. and Addie went down to get her to come up here but the old rip would not let her come.They came back and Pa went down but he could not get her either. After breakfast Ma Gusta and I went down there to see her. We staid until he came back from the store where he had been trading and then we came home
