Woodin Burial Site
Read by Joseph and Doris Boyd.
Read on October 22, 1979.
Typed by Ruth BRYAN Coffelt of Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania.
If three graves constitute a cemetery, then the site
of the interment of individuals in woods can rightfully be called the “Woodin
Cemetery”. It is located in the southern part of the Town of Van
Etten, Chemung County, New York, and no roads or paths lead to it.
The trio of lonesome tombstones is difficult to find, especially in the
summer months when the bushes and trees are leafed out.
They stand on the east side of the Rumsey Hill Road,
some 200 feet off the dirt highway in a sparse woods on the edge of a shallow
gully. They are in a row and there is no fence around the graves;
nor is there any indication of unmarked graves.
A woods road enters the trees at a point about 1/10th
of a mile south of the Rumsey Hill Road and the Jay Rumsey Road.
It is necessary to follow this faint, rough passageway for 200 feet, then
turn right, or south, through the trees and high grass for about 150 feet.
The tombstones are only 2 ½ feet high and difficult to see until
the seeker is quite close to them.
The data on the markers was copied by Joseph and
Doris Boyd on October 22, 1979. Data in brackets does not appear
on the memorials, but has been added for interest.
