ELSTON HILL CEMETERY
The Elston Hill Cemetery is located in the northwestern
part of the Town of Van Etten, Chemung County, New York, on an extremely
narrow, crooked and steep dirt hill known as the Elston Hill Road.
It is a town highway originating on the McDuffy Hill Road (County Route
#48) and climbing Elston Hill to its summit, continuing into Tompkins County.
The small burial site is situated in the west side
of the road, 1.3 miles from McDuffy Hollow. Measuring about 40 feet
in depth and 50 feet in width, the plot could contain as many as 25 graves.
Sunken spots and stubs of markers are mute evidence of “forgotten” grave
sites. There is no fence. Eight small trees, two of them apple,
grow on the cemetery ground. Tiger lilies abound.
The following record was made by Doris and Joseph
Boyd on July 9, 1975. Data in brackets does not appear on the tombstones,
but has been added for interest. Likewise, the surname has been added
for wives, sons and/or daughters for the sake of clarity.

Two fieldstone stubs with no data |
On the transcription for the cemetery there is a stone listed W_?_ H Jane, 7/7/1843 - 3/18/1855, 11yrs, 6m,11d. Daughter of John and Susan _? I believe the stone is for Jane Welsh, daughter of John and Susan Welsh. They are my ggggrandparents. They are in the 1850 Census in Painted Post, Steuben County, with a daughter Jane 7 years old. In the NY State Census in 1855 they are listed in Big Flats, Chemung, NY, without Jane. John's will names all other children found in Census Data. I don't know if this is helpful but I will pass it along.
Great site. Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Lori Semashko
