Merrill Family Cemetery |
|
NOTE: I also have considerable John / Abraham / Eleazer Merrill
(originally from Litchfield / Hartford, CT) geneaalogy commencing in 1500s.
Additionally, we descendants have an annual reunion in June (week prior
to Father's Day). Please contact me for further information.
I have several photos of the headstones in this cemetery. If
you would like a photo e-mailed, please contact me and I shall do my best
to oblige.
Cemetery Location: Litchfield Township, Litchfield Road, Bradford
County, PA
(Across from the "T" intersection of Sayre Hill Road and Litchfield
Road)
Approximately 15 minutes SOUTHWEST of Nichols, New York
Approximately 21 miles NORTHEAST of Towanda, PA (Bradford Co. Seat)
This cemetery borders the current landowner, Ms. Jean Minielly. The now Minielly residence was the original Solomon and Eleazer Merrill homestead in Litchfield Township. The cemetery is relatively hidden from the main road by a large meadow filled with buttercups, clover and timothy. It is surrounded by a rusty wire fence and carpted with daffodil greens, pine needles, and crunchy leaves. Most tombstones are over 150 years old and some are very hard to read. While I have examined every stone in the cemetery, some have toppled over, some have moved (throughout the seasons and years) and some appear to be footstones with no sign of any past headstone. In order to efficiently record the data, I have elected to present the information here in "rows" instead of headstones with footstones.

Correction to: row 12
Leslie, s/o SB & JC Benson should be DENSON. J.C.
DENSON was my aunt, twin sister of my paternal grandmother.
Information from Janet Dimmick McKnight.

Hi Joyce - last year you and
I were discussing the information on the Litchfield Cemetery in Litchfield,
PA. You so kindly uploaded my information to your site.
Our Merrill Reunion committe is in the process of attempting to have a memorial plaque of some sort created, and in doing so, we've researched some old cemetery "maps". There is one name that doesn't appear on my listing that you uploaded, as the headstone is broken and/or missing. That information is:
WILLIS WATKINS - son of William
& Elizabeth Watkins
died 4-16-1838
aged 12 years and 8 days.
According to the maps, it appears that this entry should fall right after "Abigail" in my Row "4".
I note that Janet Dimmick McKnight provided you with a surname spelling correction from "Benson" to "Denson". She is absolutely correct that "Denson" is the proper name. The headstone is in awful condition, but the maps definitely note "Denson" as the name in question.
Thanks, as always, for an awesome site. I wish I had the time to flip through the Bradford County information page by page, but I'm happy in knowing that each time I visit, I'll find more tidbits that I missed during the prior visit.
Thanks again!
Christine D. Beers
