Joyce,
I live near Baltimore, Maryland and during the last year Ive been repairing the Burnham Cemetery located in ArmeniaTownship, Bradford, Pennsylvania. When I first saw the cemetery in 1999, all of the gravestones had fallen over and most of them were broken and/or sunken inthe ground. I dug all of the gravestones out of the ground and righted the ones that were whole; the others were brushed off and reassembled on top of the ground where they had fallen.
There were eleven gravestones in the cemetery, but due to the effects of weather and time, some of the inscriptions were difficult to read. I inventoried the cemetery and typed the information into a MS Excel file. I found two gravestone bases without the gravestones and other evidence indicating there have been some removals from the cemetery. My 4thgreat-grandparents, Gosper and Betsey WHEELER Webler are interred at the Burnham Cemetery. Their gravestones were in very poor condition; I've temporarily removed them from the cemetery and Im having a new gravestone made for them.
During my visit to the cemetery this past Easter, I spoke with the property owner (Lauri Young) and she was very pleased with the repair effort. She is planning to install a simple fence around the cemetery to keep the cows out. Weve also been in contact with Jack Burnham who resides in Elmira, NY; he's a descendant of one of the early settlers on Armenia Mountain, Alba Burnam. According to the old records, the first burial in the cemetery was Celia Burnam (1812-1850), wife of Alba Burnam, but I have not found her gravestone.
The verse on the gravestone of Frances L.Russell reads:
Yet again Ive hope to greet thee
When the day of life is fled
Then in heaven with joy to greet thee
Where no farewell tears are shed.
I'll plan to send you the Excel file (cemetery inventory) in a couple of days. Let me know if this file type is OK, and if you'd like it in any particular format.
Sincerely,
This older reading of the cemetery includes one additional stone that
was legible earliler and no longer is.
