Obituary of Charles Joseph Hancock
Added by Trauma 42 on 31 Dec 2006
Charles J. Hancock has been successful and progressive in business.
Death is result of long illness. Prominent in the work of his church.
Charles Joseph Hancock , one of the most progressive of Elmira's businessmen,
died at 12:10 o"clock this afternoon at the family home, 505 William Street.
Mr. Hancock had been in ill health several months but had not been confined
to his home until the past six weeks. The decedent was born in Rochester
sixty years ago and after completing his education in the schools in that
city he engaged in the retail shoe business there until he removed to Elmira
about 18 years ago. Mr. Hancock purchased the former Charles Pearce bakery
business on East Water Street, which was located opposite the Hotel Rathbun.
He remained at that point six years and his business, having outgrown the
location, he purchased the M.M. Conklin bakery business which was formerly
located on the corner of Lake and Fourth Street, where he continued six
years until he erected the modern baking plant at 409 Madison Avenue in
1909.
Mr. Hancock was one of the progressives in his line of trade and his
trade was increased in a remarkable manner until it stands among the leaders
in the bakery business of the Southern Tier Counties, the trade in nearby
counties being a valuable asset in the business. As a man , Mr. Hancock
was liberal and fair minded, square in his business dealing and devoted
his life to his home, his church and his business and also found time to
assist in extending help to those in misfortune. Mr. Hancock was a member
of the board of trustees of the First Methodist Episcopal Churh and the
president of Newtown Chapter of the Brotherhood of that church, in which
he was most enthusiastic and one of the dependable leaders.
The decedent is survived by his widow, a daughter, Miss E. Louise Hancock
and a son George Sidney Hancock all of this city: a brother, John Hancock
of Rochester. Also four sisters, Mrs. Frederick Hawkins and Mrs. Frank
Plummer, Mrs. A. Hampton, Mrs. Charles Crouch, all of Rochester. The funeral
will be held at the famiy home on William Street, Monday at 2:30 PM. Burial
in Woodlawn cemetery.
Charles Joseph Hancock died Jul 17 1915. You can just see him , with
a magnifying glass, standing on the steps of the new bakery.
