Memorandum of a few early events in my life to my children on my 64th Birthday. I was born in the    town of Sullivan, Chesire County, New Hampshire on February 22, 1804. My father's name was John    Haven and my mother Abigail Fay. I, with my father's family of six sons and one of two daughters    moved to the wilderness of Pennsylvania in early winter of 1815 when I was eleven years old. We    came on two sleds, one drawn by a pair of horses, the other by two heavy yoke of oxen. We found    good sleighing the whole distance. One horse team made the trip in fifteen days, but the oxen team    took eighteen days. My father and two brothers came the year before, summer of 1814, bought a    possession and built a log house. Chopped and cleared five acres and sowed wheat, it was about where   Charlie Smith's barn is now and on the little flat above the barn at the foot of the hill farther west.    This we harvested the first summer. Also chopped, cleared and sowed to wheat ten acres near the    Haven schoolhouse and as far south as a row of apple trees that Nahum Haven planted. Our nearest    grist mill was Long's Mill near Troy, PA., nine or ten miles distance. Nearly all the way was woods. I   commenced to chop and clear my farm when I was twenty years old and married Clarissa Dart,    formerly from Vermont, but then of Charleston, Tioga County, Pennslyvania, the 23rd day of    February 1826. Settled on my farm and here since. I have hauled wheat to Elmira, New York 20    miles and sold it at 0.62 to 0.69 cents per bushel to pay for land that cost in it's wild state at $3.00 per   acre. I have done nothing but regular farming: was never a speculator and consequently was obliged    to be economical and work hard as well as my wife and my family. I am 64 years old today and feel    my work is almost done. Signed 22 January 1868 by Charles Haven

  Luther E. Haven
  Editor Register:
I notice in the last issue of your paper an allusion by the Austinville correspondent to the honorable    and useful positions held by Deacon L. E. Haven in the Baptist church and Sunday school of that    place. Mr. Haven belonged to one of the oldest and most respectable families of Columbia township.    His grandfather, John Haven emigrated from Sullivan township, N. H., in the month of February,    1815, and settled in the wilderness about one mile from Austinville, then Morgan Hollow, in the    direction of Elmira. He brought his family and goods on two sleds. One sled was drawn by a span of    horses and the other by two yoke of oxen. The horses performed the journey in 15 days, and the oxen    in 18 days. Two sons, Nathan and Luther, preceded the rest of the family one year, and made a    clearing where the home was located. The family consisted of six sons and two daughters. One, a    married daughter, remained behind until 1837, in which year she settled near the rest of the family:    This was the mother of Franklin Baker, who resides one mile north-west of Austinville. The names of   five sons of John Haven were: Nathan, Luther, Carter, Royal and Charles. These all cleared and    occupied lands which were a part of, or contiguous to. The original tract upon which the family    settled. Charles, father of the subject of this notice, occupied the farm now owned by J. N. Aspinwall,    where all his children were born and reared. The names of these were: Luther, Oscar, of Elmira,    Aaron of Cranston, R. I., Frank, Susan, Mrs. I. S. Aspenwall, Caroline, Harriet, Mrs. Walter Gernert,   and Lydia, Mrs. J. P. Bullock. All are deceased except Oscar, Susan, and Aaron. Sept. 14th, 1859,    Luther married Martha, daughter of Rev. Joseph Beaman. His two daughters, Harriet and Fanny,    survive him. One son, Charles, died in childhood. Mr. Haven's tragic death, which was the result of    an accident Aug. 26th, 1897, while at work on a barn, spread a gloom over the feelings of many who    knew and respected him. His funeral was held at Austinville Aug. 28th, and was largely attended.    His pastor, Rev. S. G. Brundage led the service, assisted By Rev. T. Mitchell. T.M. (obituary).

  Mrs. Susan Aspinwall.
Mrs. Aspinwall died at Austinville, August 9th, 1903. She was the eldest daughter of Charles Haven,    deceased, and was one of a family of seven children, two of whom, Oscar and Aaron, remain. Her    birth occurred December 17th, 1835, consequently she was at the time of her death, 68 years, 8    months and 22 days old. She was united in marriage to I. N. Aspinwall, June 7th, 1855. A greater    part of the time since that, she has lived on the farm where she was born, tow or more miles from    Austinville. She became a member of the Columbia and Wells Baptist church in 1852. Mrs.     Aspinwall was one of the best christian workers, a woman of untarnished character, and was held in    highest esteem by all who knew her. Mr. Aspinwall has the sympathy of the community at large in    his great bereavement, and the more so as he left with no blood relatives to aid him in bearing the    burdens of life in his declining years. The funeral was largely attended, and was held from the Baptist   church and was held from the Baptist church at Austinville at 2 o’clock on the 11th inst. Rev. Barge    Gates, the young Baptist pastor, preached an excellent sermon from the text: “Be thou faithful unto    death and I will give thee a crown of life.” Other parts of the service were conducted by Rev. T.    Mitchell of Troy, who had known the deceased from her early youth. The interment was in the Besley   cemetery (Troy Gazette, Thursday, August 13, 1903).

McCLELLAND

John McClelland b. July 1754, related to be a native of Ireland, served in the American Revolution, m. perhaps Jan 1784 in the Shawangunk Dutch Reformed Church in Ulster County, New York, Anna Maria Weller b. 25 May 1760 (pension ) baptised 7 June 1760 Reformed Church, Montgomery, New York daughter of Hieronimus Weller and Elsie Bookstaver. Most of their children were perhaps b. at Harpersfield, Delaware County, New York. Settled in Columbia Township perhaps 1807-8 on Sugar Creek west of Columbia Cross Roads. Application for pension (W2833) dated 2 June 1821, d. 16 Nov 1821. Pioneer and Patriot Families by Heverly indicates he was 62 at the time of his death, but if he was b. July 1754 he would have been 67. Anna enumerated with son Peter in 1820 and 1830. Widow’s application dated 2 Nov 1838. Anna enumerated with son Peter in 1840. Anna d. 24 July 1842. Dates of birth for children from pension application of Anna.

My aunt, Barbara (Newell) Shamp, wrote the first version of our Newell-Elliott family history. Barbara was born in Columbia Cross Roads and lived there for several years before moving away. While writing the booklet, she interviewed McClelland, Furman and Gernert families that lived in the area.

Below are a few quotes from the booklet; my comments in brackets [ ].

One paragraph says "Daughter Margaret [McClelland], married James Morgan, son of one of the first settlers of the area, and later, John [McClelland] and his wife [Anna Maria (Weller) McClelland] would live with the Morgans until his death in 1820. He was buried in the cemetery near the creek. Anne Marie seems to have moved to the home of another daughter, Mary Ann or Eleanor Jane."

Another paragraph says "Anne Marie died July 24, 1842, but before her death there are records that show she applied for a widow's pension from the government because John had served in the Revolutionary War. The records state that she was confined to bed, ill, and unable to care for herself. She was buried beside John [McClelland]. The cemetery was washed away in a flash flood sometime later in the century." Paul Newell.

Patience Jane Franklin McClelland, one of the oldest, most widely known and highly esteemed    residents of this vicinity, departed this life on Friday, July 14th at the home of her daughter, Mrs.    Frederick Bohlayer, aged 90 years, two months and six days. Mrs. McClelland was born in Caldwell,    N. J., and was the daughter of the Rev. William and Elizabeth Dobbins Franklin. Her father was a    Presbyterian minister. He removed to Smithfield, Pa., and was pastor of the church there from 1829    until his death in 1834. She was married to John McClelland in October, 1845, and resided on a farm   situated on the road from Troy to Columbia X Roads, until her husband’s demise, residing since with    her daughter, Mrs. Bohlayer. To her were born four daughters, two of whom died in youth, and the    surviving ones are Mrs. Bohlayer and Miss Mary Elizabeth; also seven grandchildren survive. She    was the oldest member of the Presbyterian church in Troy, and although owing to the feebleness of    advanced years, being unable to attend the services, yet was her presence felt by her contribution in    the form of beautiful words of faith and well selected passages of scripture which it was her pleasure    to send to each roll call. Truly her life was a remarkable one. Nearing the century mark she could    look back over a long and useful life, one full of generous deeds and good works. With a fearless    courage, she surmounted every difficulty and all the trials and vicissitudes incidents to a devoted    christian life, and it might well be said of her: Surely a mighty one has fallen in Israel." Her genial    presence and wise counsel will be missed in the home which she has long adorned, but our loss is her    gain for she like Paul of old could truly say, "I have fought the good fight, I have kept the faith," and    who is there can doubt but she has earned the crown and received the welcome plaudit "Well done    good and faithful servant." The funeral was conducted from her late home on Monday afternoon    when a large concourse of friends gathered to pay their last tribute of respect. In the absence of her    pastor who is on his vacation, the services were conducted by her former pastor, the Rev. G. P. Sewall   of Aurora, N. Y., who spoke impressively of her devout christian character, choosing for his text the    appropriate words, "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth yea saith the spirit    that they may rest from their labors, and their works do follow them." The casket was covered with    beautiful flowers placed in loving rememberance by hands that had ministered to her so tenderly in    life. At the conclusion of the services the body was borne to the family plot in the cemetery at    Columbia Cross Roads, her four grandsons acting as bearers (Troy Gazette Register, Friday, July 21,    1911).
