Newspaper article: LIBERTY MAN IS STRICKEN IN
CAR - Follmer Artley pulls auto up to curb just as death overtakes him,
result of acute heart attack - Edward Maahs, 1140 Meade street collapses
immediately across street - occurrences attract big crowd. Hundreds of
people thronged on Market Street, between Third and Fourth Streets early
this afternoon, as one man died of a heart attack while sitting in his
automobile along the curb and another man suffered an attack directly across
the street and fell to the pavement suffering a deep gash across the left
temple. Both occurred within 20 minutes. Follmer Artley, aged about 34
years, a well known farmer of Liberty RD1 was the victim of the heart attack.
Witnesses said he drove up to the curb about 12:15 o'clock and began gasping
for breath. One passerby ran to notify Officer Harry Weisenberger who was
nearby, but by the time the policeman reached the scene Artley was dead.
His hand was still clutched on the steering wheel of his car. Weisenberger
immediately notified Dr. Robert C. Bastian, county coroner who arrived
on the scene shortly thereafter. He stated that the man apparently died
of an acute heart attack. Several cousins who live in this city arrived
before the body was taken to Page's Undertaking Parlors, and confirmed
the identity of the deceased. They said that he had been under the care
of a physician recently. While Artley's body was being placed in the Page
funeral car, persons began shouting from across the street that another
man had collapsed. The hundreds of persons who were jammed in the vicinity
of Artley's car surged across the street. Somewhere in the crowd were several
policemen and Dr. Bastian, who had to push their way rather forcibly before
they could reach the side of the second stricken man. They found Edward
MAAHS, of 1140 Meade Street, lying on the pavement bleeding profusely from
a gash across the temple. He was helped to his feet and taken in the police
ambulance to the emergency room at the Williamsport Hospital where it was
found that his injury was not serious. He said he fell to the ground when
he suddenly felt weak and that the wound on his head was caused as he struck
the pavement. He was removed to his home from the hospital in the police
ambulance.
