BARNES John Barnes

89, died Thursday, June 2, 2011 in Wellsboro, PA. John was born January 31, 1922 in Philadelphia, PA. He received his undergraduate and Ph.D from Penn State University. He served in WWII as a navigator in the 95th Bombardment Group/3rd Air Division/Army Air Corp in the European Theater. He retired from DuPont Haskell Laboratory as the Director of Pathology in 1982. He enjoyed reading, gardening and stamp collecting.  John was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Sarah; his son, Whiteley; and his son-in-law, Steven Lewis. He is survived by his children, James (Linda) of Seattle, Washington; his daughter, Elizabeth of Wilmington, DE, Charles (Jennifer) of Wellsboro, PA, and his grandsons, Kevin and Chase Barnes.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 8, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church, 15 Gender Road, Newark, Delaware. BARBER Clayton L. Barber

Post Creek, NY: Clayton L. Barber, age 90, of Post Creek, NY, died on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Bath VA Medical Center. Clayton was born in Corning on June 2, 1921, to Frank and Bertha (Cease) Barber. He attended a one room school in Post Creek, and graduated from Northside High School. He worked for the railroad until he enlisted in the US Army in 1944. He served with the 880th Medical Supply Detachment in Pearl Harbor. Clayton worked for Hungerfords in Big Flats as a steel fabricator for 45 years. He was a member of the Big Flats American Legion, Crystal City VFW, and a bartender for the Big Flats American Legion. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, and fishing. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia (Robert) Robertson of Dundee; grandchildren, Yvonne Marie Kalakewich of Altay, Robert (Melanie) Robertson, II of Watkins Glen, Randy (Ellen) Robertson of Springvale, ME; great-grandchildren, Robert David Kalakewich of Altay, Ryan (Tina) Kalakewich of Montour Falls, Nathan Robertson of Watkins Glen, Nicole Robertson of Watkins Glen, Andrew Robertson of Watkins Glen, and Dustin La Rochelle of Springvale, ME; two great, great-granddaughters, Paris Kalakewich and Savannah Brown; many nieces and nephews. Clayton was predeceased by his son, Clayton Barber, Jr. in 1969, four brothers, Leon, Tom, Tuffy, and Frank Barber, and by three sisters, Ethel Rose, Margaret Ruggles, Leona Trabert. At Clayton's request, there will be no services. Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. BENNETT Robert Bennett

84, of Corning, died Monday, June 20, 2011 at Corning Hospital.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He retired as a carpenter for Streeter Associates in Elmira.  Survivors include his wife, Harriet; six daughters, Donna Warriner of Addison, Sandy Bennett of Lawrenceville, Pa., Sara Kerrick of Effort, Pa., Dawn Harris of Bath, Arlene Niess of Allentown, Pa., Virginia Wetherby of Wellsboro, Pa.; four sons, Lon Bennett of Keystone Heights, Fla., Clifford Bennett of Corning, Larry Roosa of Columbus, Ga. and Raymond Roosa of Covington, Pa.; two sisters, Jean Anderson of Himrod and Eleine Sapp of Masaryktown, Fla.; and two brothers, Lon J. BESSEY Richard Baskerville Bessey

former President of the Corning Incorporated Foundation, age 90, died peacefully June 18, 2011 surrounded by his loving family.  Richard was born August 7, 1920 in Passaic, NJ, the son of the late John Mack Bessey and Grace Baskerville Bessey. He attended schools in Nutley, NJ, and was graduated from Bay View High School in Milwaukee, WI. He received a BA degree (Journalism) from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Bessey and the former Patricia Lewis were married on October 22, 1950 at the First Methodist Church in Champaign, Illinois.  The couple has two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah Diane and Mark Benjamin of Brighton, NY, and Melinda Carol and Kenneth Ginter of LeRoy, NY. There are five grandchildren: Richard Mark Benjamin of Chicago, Ill, Daniel Gregory Benjamin of Brooklyn, NY, Brian Nelson Bradford of Chevy Chase, MD, Andrew Lewis Bradford of San Diego, CA, and Kathryn Rose Bradford of E.Amherst, NY. Bessey served as a news reporter on the Cortland, NY Standard and the Binghamton NY Press before joining the editorial staff of the News-Gazette, a Champaign-Urbana, IL. daily. He worked in Champaign-Urbana for several years as a staff writer, Assistant City Editor, and Sunday Editor. He was a veteran of military service in World War II and spent a year in Japan with the U.S. Army of Occupation. He was on the Public Relations staff of Eighth Army Headquarters in Yokohama. In 1957, Bessey joined the Public Relations Department of Corning Incorporated, initially as a product publicity writer. He subsequently was appointed Supervisor of Product Publicity and then Supervisor of Corporate Information. In 1965, he was appointed Assistant Director of the Corning Incorporated Foundation. Bessey subsequently served as the Foundation’s Executive Director and as Foundation President and a member of its Board of Trustees.  A longtime participant in community activities, Bessey held terms as a president of the United Way of Southeastern Steuben County, president of the Southern Tier Library System, and president of the Advisory Council of the Steuben County Office for the Aging. For more than 25 years, he was on the Board of the Bethany Village in Horseheads and served as Board secretary. He was a founding Board member of the Market Street Restoration Agency and a member of the Agency’s Design Review Committee. He served several years as secretary of the Intown Futures Organization. He was on the Board and served a term as chairman of the Community Foundation of the Elmira-Corning Area. He served on the Board of the Greater Corning Area Chamber of Commerce. Bessey served as a Trustee of Alfred University. He also was on the Board of the College Center of the Finger Lakes and the New York Association of Independent Colleges. For several years he was on the Board of the Corning Community College Development Foundation and was Board President when he retired.  He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Corning Museum of Glass. He also was a longtime Trustee of the Rockwell Museum. For an 18-month period, he worked as Interim Director of the Rockwell Museum and was elected a Trustee Emeritus. Bessey was a member of the Corning Rotary Club and helped produce the club’s newsletter. He was a recipient of the Paul Harris award in July 2008. Professional affiliations included Sigma Delta Chi, national honorary journalism fraternity, and the Public Relations Society of America. He was a member of the Contributions Council of the Conference Board, a national business research organization. He was cited for service on the faculty of the Board’s Contributions Management Institute.   Bessey also served on the national Advisory Council of the Business Committee for the Arts. He authored a series of nominations which led to national awards in recognition of Corning’s corporate contributions to the arts.  Bessey was the recipient of several awards for his civic activities. He received the Chairman’s Award for volunteer efforts on behalf of the Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber also presented him its Citation for Community Service and its Outstanding Performance Award.  The United Way named Bessey to its Hall of Fame. He was presented a Community Service Award by the Steuben County Office for the Aging. He was honored with an Arts Partnership Award by the ARTS of the Southern Finger Lakes.  A supporter of organizational collaboration, Bessey played an active role in the merger of the four United Ways serving Corning, Elmira, Bath and Hornell into the United Way of the Southern Tier.  He also was a member of the Task Force which led to merger of the Corning and Elmira community foundations and was a founding Board member of the Steuben Senior Services Fund.  During his 12 years as president of the Southern Tier Library System, Bessey had a key part in the development of the joint city-towns library organization in Corning, and in obtaining public and private funding for construction of the current library building.  Richard was an active member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Corning for 50 years and served on numerous committees. BLACK Robert Joseph Black Jr.

85, died peacefully on June 8, 2011. Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa. Bob was a wonderful man loved and respected by all. Bob was born in Rochester, NY to Robert and Alice Nash Black (deceased). Bob graduated from Trumansburg Central School in 1941 and Ithaca College in 1947. Bob served with the army Air Corp in WWII. Bob married Alice VanWormer (deceased 1992) on June 29, 1947. They had three children, John (deceased), Valerie (Milt) Emery, Michael (Brenda Williamson) and two Granddaughters, Jodie (Cale) Bodine and Autumn Emery (Duane) and great-granddaughters Isis Barber, Sasha Bodine and Delaney Bodine and by his companion Peppie the Papillon. Bob married Beverly Williams Klinko (deceased 2008) in 1996. Bob & Beverly enjoyed being active through golf, travel, sporting and dance activities and the NY Yankees. Bob was predeceased by his brother Lawrence (2008) and he is survived by his sister-in-law, Corrine Black, and their family; as well as numerous nieces and nephews from Alice's family. Bob started Black's Heating and Plumbing in the 50's and expanded to own and operated three coin Laundries (one in Sayre, PA), and an appliance store. He worked at Cornell University as a Facilities Manager for Campus Life for ten years until his retirement. Bob was a master carpenter. He created many wonderful homes and projects for his family and others to enjoy. Friends & neighbors near his Florida home will remember his willingness to help with many projects from carpentry to plumbing and more. Bob was an active member of the Trumansburg and Oak Run (Ocala, FL) Golf Clubs for many years. He was an avid reader and enjoyed using the Libraries. BOTSFORD Frank

Frank Botsford, 88, of 339 S. Williamson Road Blossburg, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011. Mr. Botsford was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Mary Jane; his parents, Margaret and Frank Botsford; sister, Marian Schlappi and brother William Botsford.  Frank was born in Towanda, Pa. on November 22, 1922. He graduated from Canton High School in 1940 and served five years in the U.S. Army before and during W.W. II.  He received a B.S. degree from Mansfield State College; a M.S. degree in School Administration from Bucknell University and an advanced supervisory degree from Bucknell University and George Washington University.  Mr. Botsford is survived by sisters-in-law, Eloise Botsford, Rochester N.Y. and Audrey Myers, Blossburg; nieces, Evelyn (Tony) Adams, Rochester N.Y., Jennifer Botsford, Manassas, Va.; Margaret Evens, Manchester Center, Vt.; Sharon (Robert) Stackhouse, Troy, Pa.; nephews, Norman (Jetty) Botsford, Edmond, Okla. and John Schlappi, Ralston.  Mr. Botsford was a long time principal of Liberty High School; he was always exceptionally proud of the achievements of the students and staff of the school.  He was most pleased with the tribute in the school annual that stated simply that he was our teacher, our leader - our friend. BRESEE Dr. Clyde W. Bresee

died on Saturday, July 16, 2011. He was 95.  A lifelong resident of Bradford County, and of Athens since 1949, he was a professional educator, licensed psychologist, author and advocate for education and social justice. He was also a musician of unusual talent and expressiveness. In all phases of his life, whether as a musician, author, educator or counselor, his concern for people and their condition and circumstances was foremost. A man of strongly held views and beliefs, he was an activist and advocate for people in need throughout his life.  Clyde Bresee was born on the family farm on Ghent Hill in 1916, a son of Chester and Ruth Bresee. When he was five years old, his parents relocated to James Island, S.C., where his father managed a large Charleston dairy operation. Plans to buy the James Island dairy operation fell through as a result of the Great Depression and the family moved back to Ulster township in 1931 when he was 15. He graduated from Ulster High School and began his higher education at Mansfield, graduating in 1937 and earning a Master's degree in biology from Penn State in 1942. His first job was at Ulster High School, where he taught English and mathematics until 1943. He married Elizabeth Barner, also a teacher, in June of 1941. They were married for 69 years until her death in January of this year. He is survived by his daughter Catherine Shannon and her husband Robert; son Jerome Bresee and his wife Cheryl; brother Bruce Bresee; and sister Jeannette Post. In 1943, Clyde Bresee was drafted into the Army and volunteered for the Medical Corps. He trained as a combat medic with the 10th Mountain Division – the "ski troops"– at Camp Hale, Colorado before being selected for Officer Candidate School at Carlisle Barracks, Pa. World War II ended while he was still in "OCS," and he served out his commitment as a hospital administrator in Hawaii. While in the Army, he wrote to his wife Elizabeth every day. An edited collection of these letters is held by the Denver Public Library as part of their 10th Mountain Division collection. These letters provide a daily record of the training at Camp Hale, then some of the toughest military training in the world.  After the war, he returned to teaching and joined the faculty at Athens High School. In 1953, he became a guidance counselor and began studies at Cornell University under the GI Bill. He was awarded a Ph. D. in counseling psychology in 1956 and later taught graduate classes at Cornell for 13 years. He originated the guidance program at Athens Area High School and directed it until his retirement. In these sequential roles as an educator and counselor, he touched and affected many lives. Following his retirement, he became a tireless volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, serving on the board of directors and later as president of the Valley affiliate chapter. He was one of the chief fundraisers for the local chapter and oversaw the building of several new homes for families in need of adequate housing.  His second career as an author led to the publication of two books centered on the James Island area where he spent his childhood. "Sea Island Yankee" is a memoir of that place in those times, and received strongly positive reviews. The New York Times review declared, "Mr. Bresee is a writer of distinction from whom we must hear more." His second book, "How Grand a Flame," provided the historical background for the James Island plantation that his father operated.  As a musician, Clyde was a Valley institution. Organist and choir director at the Athens United Methodist Church for over 30 years, he also organized, directed and accompanied the Athens High School boys' singing group "The Lancers." This group had their origin in the old Athens "Main Building" high school, and provided music for school and community functions for more than a decade, making several television appearances on local stations. He lost count of the number of weddings for which he provided the music.  Most of all, he was a counselor and friend to those in trouble or in need. His help would manifest itself in ways both small and large. It might be meal or an extra sweater for a student without adequate food or clothing, a letter of recommendation for a needed job or college admission, or personal involvement in the lives of people struggling to cope with serious problems. He loved people, and spent his life helping those in need. The final phrase of a letter of commendation presented to him upon retirement from the Habitat for Humanity board recognizes him for "...providing wise advice, counsel and personal assistance to so many whose names will be forever unknown to most of us."  Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20 at the Athens United Methodist Church.  Calling hours will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Athens United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity or the Southern Poverty Law Center. Jay E. BROWN Aaron “John” Brown

90, of Shunk, PA (Fox Twp., Sullivan County) died on Monday, June 6, 2011 at his daughter’s home in Muncy. Aaron Anson Brown, “John” to family and friends, was born on December 15, 1920, in Shunk PA, one of eight children in the family of the late Hurley and Blanche (Bartlow) Brown.  He served our country with the U.S. Army in Alaska during WWII and was a member of the Mildred American Legion.  John enjoyed his life’s work in the logging industry.   He and his brother Tuff harvested timber with teams of horses for several years.  He also operated a farm in earlier years.  In 1964, he married Joann (Miller) May Brown in Shunk.  John was a devoted husband and father who will be always remembered for countless hours of guidance and encouragement he gave them.  He especially enjoyed times spent with family, hunting, fishing and gardening.   Surviving are his children;  Mary Combs of Ithaca, NY, Lynn May of Philadelphia, NY, Linda (Ken) Hartman of Candor, NY, Ethel (Karl) Bruns of Dushore and Hazel (Dana) Tome of Muncy, 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, two brothers; Clarence “Tuff” Brown of Canton and Kenneth (Marlene) Brown of Grover, many nieces, nephews and cousins.  In addition to his beloved wife Joann who died on March 9, 2011, John was predeceased by a son, Elic M. May, a grandson, Michael May and five siblings, Letha Brown, Elizabeth Brown, Jesse, Elwood and Ellis Brown.  A graveside service and full military honors will be held 9 a.m., Thursday, June 9th, at the Brown Cemetery in Shunk. CADY Donald E. Cady

94 of Cortland, N.Y. died July 28, 2011. He was born July 7, 1917 in Sherman, N.Y., the son of Grace Legters and Herman Cady. He was a graduate of Sherman High School, Class of 1934. Donald married Maxine Wallace on Aug. 25, 1940. During WW II, he served in the Army Engineers in both the European and Pacific Theaters from 1943 to 1946. He was a manager of several GLF/Agway stores in Pennsylvania and New York.  He is survived by his son, Wallace, and wife, Sandra, of Towanda, and daughter, Bonnie, and husband Tom Basl of Deerfield, N.Y.; four grandchildren Sherilyn Cady and husband Tony DeHart of Vestal, N.Y.; Becky Cady and husband Jeff Wright of Apex, N.C..; Derek Baker of Deerfield, N.Y.; and Sean Baker of Brooklyn, N.Y. Also surviving are six great grandchildren: Ciara, Serina, Luke and Logan DeHart of Vestal N.Y. and Abby and Evie Wright of Apex, N.C. CLARK Wayne T. Clark

89, of Lawrenceville, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at The Green Home.  He was the husband of Doris Clark, and then Lucy Clark who died Nov. 27, 2010. Wayne was born May 28, 1922, in Westfield, the son of the late Stephen and Ruth Tubbs Clark.  He was a retired inspector with Corning Glass Works and a United States Army veteran serving during World War II.  Surviving are sons, Donald Clark of Corning, N.Y., Richard (Tammy) Clark of Enoree, S.C.; daughters, Gloria (Roger) Proctor of Corning, N.Y., Debbie Smith (Everett Southard) of Lawrenceville, Alisa (Harry) Fedoriw of Beaver Dams, N.Y.; step-sons, Gerald D. Makin of Corning, N.Y., Robert W. Reese of Painted Post, N.Y, Stryker B. Reese of Lawrenceville; step-daughter, Beverly A. Reese of Corning, N.Y.; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. DETRICK Donald J.

Wellsburg, NY: Donald J. Detrick, age 85, of 14 Main St., Wellsburg, NY, died July 16, 2011 at Elcor Nursing Center, Horseheads, NY, following a long illness. Born June 7, 1926 in South Waverly, NY, he was the son of Howard and Alice Munn Detrick. He was retired from Leigh Valley Railroad, General Electric, and the Elmira Heights School system. He enjoyed watching NASCAR, NFL football, and college football. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. Don was a WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy. He is a member of the American Legion Post #154, Elmira Heights, NY. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Detrick; and brother, Lyle Detrick. DROHAN William C. "Bill" Drohan

94, died peacefully on July 11, 2011 at his home at Arbor Ridge.   A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 3:00PM Friday July 15, 2011 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Father Paul Dechant, O.S.F.S. officiating. Inurnment will be beside his wife at Mount Saviour Monastery's Oblate Cemetery in Pine City, New York.   A native of Yonkers, New York, Bill was the son of the late Susan Frances Cunningham Drohan and William Drohan. He graduated with a BS Degree in Ceramic Engineering from Alfred University in Alfred, NY. He served his Country during World War II as a Lieutenant Commander with the US Navy in the Pacific Theatre. In addition to his wife and parents, he also was preceded in death by his sisters Anna Drohan and Madeline Holland, and infant brother Thomas Drohan.  He began his career in sales and marketing with Corning Glass Works(Corning, Inc.) After 36 years of being with the company, he retired as General Manager of Scientific Laboratory Glassware Division in Corning, NY.   He married the love of his life, the late Elizabeth Grace O'Brien April 28, 1951. She died October 24, 1989. A devout Catholic, he was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kernersville, NC, and an Oblate of Mount Saviour Monastery in NY.  He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and most recently great-grandfather. A man of kindness and peace, he always tried to exemplify the Catholic values of unconditional love and generosity.  He was a loving father to William C. Drohan, Jr. of Seattle, WA, Susan F. FULBROOK Francis G. Fulbrook

87 of N. Wilbur Ave., Sayre, Pa. and formerly of Nichols died at his home with his family at his side Tuesday morning, Aug. 16, 2011. Affectionately known as "Frank" by his family and friends, he was born on July 11, 1924 in Bronx, N.Y. a son of the late William E. and Florence (Swager) Fulbrook. He was a graduate of the Glassboro High School in Glassboro, N.J. Following graduation served his country proudly with the United States Army during World War II and was one of the first men landing on Omaha Beach. Frank was a member of the Nichols American Legion and the Skiff-Bower VFW Post No. 1536. As an active member of the Nichols community Frank was involved with the Friends of the Cady Library and was member of the former Nichols Ro-ki club where he served as president. Many will remember seeing Frank at the Western Auto he owned and operated for twenty years in Nichols. Following his retirement, Frank looked forward to fellowship with the Romeo Club: "Retired Old Men Eating Out" Frank is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlotte (Slim) Bussard Fulbrook; his children: Frank J. Fulbrook of Camden, N.Y.; James E. (Debbie) Fulbrook of Fairfax, Va.; William Donald (Nea) Fulbrook of Havelock, NC; Geraldine Fulbrook-Hanna of Acton, Mass.; Kathryn (Arnold) Berger of Litchfield, Pa.; Walter (Anna) Bussard of Barton, N.Y.; Jesse Ray (Ann) Bussard of Horseheads, N.Y.; eighteen grandchildren, sixteen (and counting) great grandchildren; his sister Barbara Prus of Milford, Del.; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive. GEISS Watson Geiss

90, of 8 Circuit Drive, Elmira, N.Y., formerly of Sayre, died on June 6 at the Robert Packer Hospital, located In Sayre, Pa.  Watson was born in Sayre, Pa., on May 27, 1921, the son of the late Elmer and Madeleine Robinson Geiss.  Watson grew up in South Waverly and was a 1941 graduate of Sayre High School. He was a WWII Navy veteran, having served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters. He was retired from J. C. Penny and was working at the Horseheads Do-It Center at the time of his passing.  Watson is survived by his sons Jeffrey of Sayre, Matthew of Kingston, Pa., grandchildren Scott and Penny Geiss of East Smithfield, Pa., Michael and Tammy Geiss of Waverly, Maryanne Geiss of Waverly, Tabatha Geiss of Binghamton, N.Y., seven great-grandchildren, two brothers Robert of Waverly, Earl of Merced, Calif., Sisters Patricia of Shady Cove, Ore., Marie of Burlington N.C., and Nancy of Clarence, N.Y.  Watson Was predeceased by his son George Geiss; his brothers Elmer (Chubby), Edward, Paul; and his sister Marion.   The funeral will be private. GORTON John N.

Age 89 of Elmira, NY. He was born December 3, 1921 in Ridgeberry Hill, PA son of the late John N. and Nettie (Bush) Gorton and died Thursday, August 4, 2011 at home after an extended illness. He was predeceased by his wife Emma and daughter Patricia Morris, both in 2007. He is survived by his daughter Eileen Gustin of Elmira; son and daughter-in-law John P. and Tina Gorton of Westmoreland, NH; son-in-law Roger Morris of N. Tonawanda, NY; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Mr. Gorton retired from Bendix and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. GROSE Duane P. (Peter) Grose

age 86, of 381 E. Main St. PO Box 193, Laceyville, Pa. died at the VNA Hospice Unit of C.M.C. Hospital in Scranton, Pa. early Saturday morning, Aug. 20, 2011 after a long illness. Peter was born on Sept. 19, 1924 in Skinners Eddy, Pa., the son of the late Raymond C. and Nina Durling Grose.  Growing up in Laceyville, Pete was a graduate of the Laceyville High School class of 1943.  After his graduation from high school Peter served his country in the US Army Infantry Division during World War II from 1943-1945 in North Africa and later Italy where he was wounded in action earning two Purple Hearts, one decorated with an Oak Leaf Cluster, and also earning a Bronze Star.  For many years Peter was employed at the Skinners Eddy Creamery, which later became Bradford County Creamery. He was also employed at the Sylvania (GTE) of Towanda, Pa. and retired in 1981.   He was a member of the Skinners Eddy United Methodist Church, the Rought Hall Post No. 510 American Legion of Black Walnut, and the Disabled American Veterans. Peter was an avid sportsman which included activities such as trapping, fishing, and hunting. He also enjoyed gardening and working with his beef cattle on his farm on Shannon Hill near Meshoppen. He took great joy with carpentry skills building his own cabin and also doing various home improvements. Peter is survived by his wife the former Mae Shannon with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary whom he married on June 23, 1946. Pete is also survived by his son Colin and his wife Tootsie Grose of Laceyville, Pa., his grandson Douglas and his wife Ji Hyun Grose of New York City, a sister Wilma and her husband Roger Burgess of Laceyville, Pa., a brother Arden and his wife Joyce Grose of Friendsville, Pa., and brother-in-law Jerry and his wife Collette Shannon of Oneonta, N.Y. Peter is also survived of many nieces and nephews.   Besides his parents, Peter was preceded in death by his brothers Norman Grose, Rexford Grose, Keith Grose, and Darrell Swisher and a sister Jean Kveragas. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Aug. 23, 2011 at the Sheldon Funeral Homes, Main Street, Laceyville, Pa. with the ministers Rev. Thomas Mott of the Meshoppen United Methodist Church and Rev. HARRINGTON C. William Harrington

92, of Odessa, NY, died May 30, 2011. He was born July 7, 1918 to Joseph "Bert" Harrington and Suzanne Merrick Harrington. Bill was a longtime resident of the Montour Falls and Odessa area.  There are no prior calling hours. A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at the First Baptist Church, 221 W. South St., Montour Falls; Rev. George J. Norton Jr. officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Montour Cemetery.  He served in WWII from 1944 to 1946, Company C, 4th Battalion, Army services forces Training Center, Fort Belvoir, Virginia as a cook with the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was awarded a Good Conduct medal, American Theater ribbon and WWII Victory ribbon.  Bill was well known as a General Contractor in the area for 40 years, first as a partner to his father in "Bert Harrington and Son" through the 1950's; later they incorporated the business to "Falls Builders and Supply Co." that operated through the 60's; and as "Bill Harrington and Son's" through the late 70's. There are many fine homes in the area as a testament to his fine workmanship.  Bill was active in the Montour Falls Baptist Church for many years. He was very active in the community in earlier years and ran for the School Board seat in the Odessa School District in the 1950's. More recently his favorite job was serving as the Harrington Family Patriarch as loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his first wife Geraldine Percy, second wife Lillian June Ward, sons Jerry and Patrick Harrington; sons-in-law George White and Edwin White; parents Burt and Susanne Harrington, and 9 brothers and sisters. Bill is survived by his children; Rev. Judy D. HOLLY Vincent J. Holly

92, formerly of Mansfield, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg.  Born Sept. 19, 1918, in Tresckow, he was the son of the late George and Anna (Havrilla) Holly. Vincent retired in January 1975 from the Pennsylvania State Police, Troop F in Mansfield, after 30 years of dedicated service. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater with the 820th Engineer Battalion. Vincent was a member, for over 50 years, of Holy Child Catholic Church, Mansfield, a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the Pennsylvania State Police Retirement Association, and the Pennsylvania State Trooper Association.  Vincent was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane (Wilson) Holly and by his daughter Patricia (Holly) Zerphey. Surviving are his daughter, Carole Ann Holly of Mechanicsburg; his son, Raymond V. Holly and Kelly Foster of Denver, Colo.; a son-in-law, John Zerphey of Montoursville; a brother, George Holly; and six sisters, Mary Yurasek, Theresa Gabriel, Sister Mary Martin, Suzanne Wiley, Kathleen Weiss, and Joan Holly.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon, Tuesday, May 31, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mechanicsburg, with viewing held from 11 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, in the church Narthex. HOUCK William "Bill" Houck

William Walker "Bill" Houck, age 85, most recently of Brentwood, TN, died Thursday, June 23 at the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville, TN. Born in Huntington, WV, Bill grew up in Elmira, NY, the second son of the late Harvey and Irma Walker Houck. While still in high school, at age 17, he joined the United States Navy. Following his basic training at Sampson, NY, he served aboard the USS Miami, assigned to the Pacific Theatre of WW II. In 1944, the USS Miami became part of "Task Force 58", seeing action in Saipan, Tinan, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. After being released from duty, Bill returned to school and studied US History at Syracuse University, NY. He continued his service to others as a NY State Trooper, before joining NCR (National Cash Register) as a sales agent in the mid 1950's. He was married for 7 years to Vernice Bair, producing one child, Kim (pictured with him). In Elmira, NY, he was known and remembered as the owner of "Bill's Bar", and a well-loved bartender at "Moretti's". Leaving New York, Bill moved to Las Vegas, NV working at the Las Vegas Hilton for many years until his retirement. Ultimately, his health care needs moved him to Tennessee to be near his daughter in 2009. In addition to his daughter: Kim (Eric) Acosta of Brentwood, TN; Bill is survived by a brother: Harvey Houck, Jr. of Lewes, DE; and a grand-daughter: Kaleigh Acosta of Brentwood, TN. HOWSON Arthur Lincoln

Lower Gwynedd, PA: Arthur Lincoln Howson 87, of ACTS Spring House Estates, 728 Norristown Road, Lower Gwynedd, PA, died Monday, May 2, 2011. Mr. Howson was a former resident of Wayne and Ithan, PA. Born on October 16, 1923, in Haddonfield, NJ, he was the third child of the late Richard and Mary Holmes Howson. Mr. Howson grew up in Wayne and Ithan, PA and attended high school at Radnor High School and the South Kent School in CT. He graduated from New England College, and later worked at Scott Paper Company in Glens Falls, NY and the Celanese Corporation in New York, NY and Charlotte, NC. Beloved husband and father to five children, he loved his family above all and will be deeply missed. Those who knew him often described him as a true gentleman who possessed a kind and gentle spirit. He had a lifelong love of nature, sailing, and aviation. His many interests and hobbies included woodworking and cross stitch, at which he was a perfectionist. He had a wonderful sense of humor and imagination and loved to tell stories. Due to being colorblind, he was unable to fly airplanes in WWII so he trained as an aviation mechanic and served in the Army. His sister, Mary, was a WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilot) in WWII who died in action in 1944. One of the highlights of Mr. Howson's life was attending the 2010 Congressional Medal of Honor award ceremony in Washington, DC honoring Mary's dedication and service as a WASP. Mr. Howson was predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan Rodemann Howson, in 2004 after 56 years of marriage. He is survived by his five children, Arthur L. Howson, Jr. and wife Anne of Greenville, SC, Timothy E. Howson and wife Abby, of Westboro, MA, Richard H. Howson and wife Tamar of Princeton, NJ, Meredith Howson Tifft and husband Douglas of Elmira, NY, and Anne R. Howson of Boston, MA; and nine grandchildren, Sarah Howson DesChamps, Elizabeth Walker Howson, Arthur L. Howson, III, Katherine P. Howson, Robin J. Howson, Daniel H. Howson, Megan H. Tifft, Douglas C. Tifft, Jr., and Emily C. Tifft; and by two brothers, Richard Howson of Lagos, Portugal, and Robert D. Howson of Eugene, OR and their seven nieces and nephews. KEENEY Leon H. Keeney

Age 91, formerly of Lawrenceville, PA, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Corning Hospital, Corning. Leon was born in Osceola, PA on January 8, 1920, to Ray and Zadie (Rosa) Keeney. He married Florence Middaugh in 1941 and was preceded in death by her in 1971. He married Eva Harrison in 1973 and was preceded in death by her in 2003. Leon worked for Corning Glass Works for over forty years and retired in 1983 as a polisher and grinder. He enjoyed refinishing furniture and restoring antique tractors. He served in the Army during World War II. He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Lee (Lloyd) DeMun of Lindley, Clida (Steve) Davis of Lawrenceville, PA, and Nadine (Victor) Brown of Porter, TX; five sons, Raymond (Millie) Keeney of Millerton, PA, Larry (Yvonne) Keeney of Lawrenceville, PA, Phillip (Shirley) Keeney of Branchport, NY, Warren (Althea) Keeney of Millerton, PA, and Kenneth (Anna) Keeney of Corning; a stepdaughter, Sally (Dominic) Bianco of Colorado; a sister, Marion Kizer of Tioga, PA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. KENERSON Irene Jewett (Kenerson) Yoder

of Lovell, Maine, and Riverview, Fla., died on July 13, 2011 at her much loved home on Kezar Lake, Maine.  She was born on Nov. 30, 1922 in Fryeburg, Maine, oldest daughter of Percival and Arolin (Jewett) Kenerson and a graduate of Fryeburg Academy. After graduation, Irene volunteered for three years of service in the Navy Waves (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service), a World War II division of the United States Navy.  Irene was predeceased by her husband of 40 years, Orville Yoder, who was the country extension agent in Bradford County for 23 years. Together they spent many years in Towanda, Pa., where she was a constant support to her husband and community and an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Towanda Garden Club. Spending most of her married life in Towanda, Pa., Irene never lost touch with her family roots in Fryeburg. She remained an active member of the Fryeburg Chapter of DAR, Eastern Star, and the historical societies of Fryeburg and Lovell, She was also a charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial Foundation and a permanent member of the WAVES National organization. KNAPP Emery Knapp
Horseheads, NY: Emery Knapp, 89 years, formerly of Kiser Road died July 29, 2011 at the Elcor Health Care Services. He was born May 21, 1922, Leroy, PA, the son of the late Stephen and Helen Tidik Knapp. He was a 1939 graduate of Canton, PA High School. Emery was a member of the Army Air Force serving during 1942-1945. He flew bomber escort missions from Iwo Jima to Japan. Emery and Roberta Reed were married at the Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church, Elmira Heights, NY. She predeceased him March 2001. He was a mechanic for the Millbrook Bakery, Elmira, NY retiring with many years service. Emery was a member of St. Mary's Orthodox Church of Corning and an avid Bible read and faithful church member. Past member of the Autobahn Society, National Rifle Association and Nation Muzzel Loading Rifle Association. He enjoyed bird watching (with his wife), hunting deer and big game in Montana. Surviving his brother, George Knapp of Missoula, MT; sister, Julia (Fr. Michael) Romanchak of Bethlehem, PA; sister-in-law, Ann (George) Turner and family of Horseheads, NY. LANGSTINE Thomas Harry Langstine

age 83, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, in Sebring, FL. He was born in Elmira, NY to Francis and Ethel (Warren) Langstine. Mr. Langstine was a heavy equipment operator, member of the Eagles, he served in the Merchant Marines during World War II, and he was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and had been a resident of Avon Park, FL since 1984 coming from Elmira, NY. He is survived by his sons, Thomas M. Langstine (Diana) of Livingston, TX, James E. Langstine (Sandra) of Punta Gorda, FL and Lawrence R. Langstine (Carole) of Elmira Heights, NY; brother, Francis Langstine of Elmira, NY; brother-in-law, Howard Coddington (Mary Ann) of Winter Haven, FL; sister-in-law, Elinor Gough (John) of Horseheads, NY; 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. LEWIS Stuart V. Lewis

89, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 after a long illness.  Stuart was born on Dec. 30, 1921 in Waterville, N.Y., the ninth of 10 children of the late Hugh and Elena O’Neill Lewis. He was a graduate of Waterville Central School, class of 1941. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps in England. He married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn M. King, in 1945 and lived in Waterville until his retirement from government service at Griffis Air Base. From 1984 until 2004, he lived in Venice and Nokomis, Fla. In 2004, he moved to Prestwick Chase in Saratoga Springs.  In addition to his parents, Stuart was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn K. LITZELMAN Bernard Litzelman

age 91, well known resident of Dushore, Pa., died on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, Pa., with his loving family at his side.  Bernie was born in Williamsport on Nov. 24, 1919, a son of the late Charles M. and Clara Adelia Tilman Litzelman. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and St. Mary's High School. He spent his early years with his aunt in Sonestown and summers on his uncle's farm in Sullivan County.  Bernie served in World War II in the Army. As a combat infantryman he was wounded in Europe where he received a purple heart and a bronze star. After the war he returned to Sullivan County where he married the former Mary A. Lynch of Dushore on Sept. 14, 1946. He and Mary began operating her father Vincent Lynch's luncheonette which they renamed Litzelman's. It was located at the red light in Dushore. They operated their store until about 1966 when Bernie began working as a clerk in the Dushore Post Office, from which he retired in 1981. In retirement Bernie was very active and worked part time for Fitzpatrick and Lambert dealership and for Homer Funeral Home.   Bernie was an active member of St. Basil's Church, a former member of the Holy Name Society and was a 4th Degree member of St. John Neumann Council K of C, Dushore, Pa., and the Dushore Fire Company. He was a very active member of Loyalsock Post 996 American Legion where he was past commander and especially enjoyed helping with the Easter egg hunt. He and Mary both volunteered at the Pa. Bowhunter's Festival since it began over 50 years ago.  Surviving is his spouse Mary at home; son and daughter-in-law Joseph and Denise Litzelman of Matthews, N.C.; daughter Ann Litzelman of Harrisburg, Pa.; sister-in-law Mildred Litzelman of Harrisburg, Pa.; three grandchildren Scott and Christine Ng Litzelman, Marie Litzelman and Jennifer Litzelman.  Bernie was predeceased by a twin sister Bernadine Litzelman on Oct. 24, 1997.  A transferal service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23 2011 at the P. Dean Homer Funeral Home, 206 Water St., Dushore, PA 18614 and will be followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at St. Basil's Church, Dushore, Pa., with the Rev. Joseph R. Hornick, his pastor, presiding. Interment will be in St. Basil's Cemetery. Friends may call on from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22, 2011 at the funeral home. MacDOWELL Richard Lawrence MacDowell Jr.

age 92, died on Friday, June 10, 2011, at Arnot Ogden Medical Center. Richard was preceded in death by his first wife, Ethyl-Joyce (Tomnie) MacDowell; and son, Peter D. He is survived by his loving wife, Eloise Ward MacDowell; children, Carolyn M. Bane, Richard L. III, Thomas W., and Margaret L.; daughters by marriage, Sandra L. Seafuse, Barbara J. Halpin, and Kathy A. Brown; as well as 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Richard retired from his role as the Senior Civil Engineer for Cornell University in 1979 following 27 years of service. He also served in the second World War and ran a successful private land surveying business. In retirement he became a skilled amateur woodworker, avid reader of many varied disciplines, and a gentleman farmer. He enjoyed roaming the roads and acquired extensive knowledge of the surrounding counties and the country through his travels and reading. He and Eloise built a lovely home together in Odessa which includes an expansive stone wall they constructed by hand in their late 70s. It stands today as a tribute to their strength and resolve. MANLEY Walter L. Manley

age 86, of New Albany, Pa. died on Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Highlands Care Center, Laporte, with his loving family at his side.  Walt was born July 5, 1924 in Towanda, Pa. son of the late S. Taylor and Eleanor Clark Manley. He graduated from the Towanda High School. After graduation he served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the Field Artillery Battalion. He earned the rank of Corporal and served in Pacific Theater of Operations. After being discharged he returned home and married the former Helen Marie McMahon of Albany Valley, on Nov. 9, 1946. Helen predeceased him on Dec. 27, 2010 after 64 years of marriage.  Walter and Helen farmed in Albany Valley and also worked as a mechanic for the Farm Dunn's Garage and the Glenn Plott's Garage in Dushore. In 1965 he and Helen started Manley's Garage in New Albany. In retirement they spent their winters in Florida. In their younger years, they enjoyed square dancing, reading and traveling.  Walt was a member of St. Basil's Church, Dushore, Pa. and a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of Wyalusing Post #534 American Legion.  He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: W. David and Reta Manley of New Albany, Pa., Burton and Sheila Manley of New Albany, Pa.; three daughters and sons-in-law: Bonnie and Michael Fox of New Albany, Pa., Joni and Brent Raupers of Ulster, Pa., Dina Manley and Neal Gallagher of Tannersville, Pa.; eight grandchildren: Nichole (Angelo) Pedro, Wade (Jill) Manley, Kristin (Brad) Vasey, Natalie (Todd) Salsman, Casey (Mandy) Townsend, Karly, Kelsy and Keegan Peterson; seven great grandchildren: Jordan, Danelle, Nicholas and Connor Salsman, Maggie Goodrich, Cooper and Layla, Helen Manley.  MILLER Edward J.

Age 91, of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Elmira, died at his Florida home, with his loving wife by his side on Sunday, October 24, 2010. Edward was born December 19, 1918, a son of Edward J. and Catherine (Flynn) Miller. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Gloria Smith Miller; son, Michael E. Miller of New Orleans, LA; grandchildren, Michael, Jr. and Theresa Miller; great grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law, Eleanor Coughlin, Rose Alice and Clair Dunlap, all of Elmira; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Edward retired from the Erie Lackawanna railroad in 1975 with 36 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Edward was a member of the Elmira Elks, Penn Yan Moose Lodge #2030, and the John Costello American Legion Post #355 in Penn Yan. MOORE Robert W. Moore Sr.

age 84, died at his home on Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011.  Born in Coatesville, Pa., on July 1, 1927, Bob was a birthright member of the Quaker Friends Meeting. He attended Williamson Trade School and after the war graduated from Scott Senior High School in Coatesville, Class of 1945.  Bob served in World War II in the Merchant Marines, later in the U.S. Army stationed in occupied Japan. He was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict serving in the Panama Canal Zone. He returned to Coatesville to raise a family and began his civilian career as a Funeral Director in Downingtown, Pa. He was next employed by an investment firm becoming a successful Financial Advisor for 20 years.  Bob was a member of the Coatesville Rotary Club, the Junior Chamber of Commerce winning the "Outstanding Young Man of the Year" in the state of Pennsylvania award. He became a Caln Township Commissioner, he received the "Freedom Foundation Award"; and also ran for the office of State Representative. He helped organize the Handicrafters in Thorndale, Pa. He enjoyed many summers of travel and camping with his family.  After retiring he moved to a small farm in Sullivan County where he resided for 31 years. His first year in Sullivan County he worked at Worlds End State Park followed by a job in maintenance at Red Rock Job Corp for 10 years until retiring again to have his own woodworking shop and business. He became an accomplished woodworker making fine hardwood furniture from local woods. Bob and his wife, Joan were Guthrie Hospice volunteers for seven years. Bob was a member of the Dushore American Legion Post 996. He spent many happy years as a member of the Laporte Little Theatre in productions at the former Mokoma Inn. In 2009 he and his wife moved to the New Albany area in Bradford County, Pa.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Ann, three brothers and three sisters.   Surviving are his wife, Joan; a brother, William B. (Geraldine) Moore of Hummelstown, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Vicki Moore of Viroqua, Wis.; his children, Robert W. (Nancy) Moore, Jr. of Gardner, Colo.; Dennis C. (Colleen) Moore of Coatesville, Pa.; Jennifer L. (Albert) Harper of Honeybrook, Pa.; Meredith M. (Daniel) Heinemeier of Arlington, Va.; Charlotte E. (Richard) McDonald of Carlisle, Pa.; Donald D. (Beverly) Sample of Bel Air, Md.; Scot C. (Deborah) Sample of New Albany, Pa.; Laura L. (David) Kennedy of Bernville, Pa.; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  Cremation has been arranged through the Russell P. McHenry Funeral Home of Dushore, Pa. OAKS William D. "Bill" Oaks

age 85 died at home, of cancer, on May 23rd, 2011 in Watkins Glen, NY. Born in Geneva, NY to Carlton V. and Della (Newton) Oaks in 1925 he grew up in Oaks Corners, NY and graduated from Phelps High School, enlisting in the Army Air Force in 1943. In 1947, he began working for the National Cash Register Co. based in Dayton, Ohio and over the course of a 40 year career rose from Technician to Branch Manager at locations ranging from Geneva, NY to Waterbury, CT, Syracuse, NY and Pittsburgh, PA. Retiring in 1987, he could finally focus his attention on his long-time passion: sailing. Those in his Watkins Glen neighborhood will remember Bill as the guy who would help out with whatever needed to be done, be it snow blowing the driveway and walks for a neighbor, repairing the chairs at the nearby library, or repairing damaged sails in his custom made attic shop. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. But perhaps most of all he will be remembered as a sailor. In retirement he was able to return to his beloved Seneca Lake where he had spent his summers as a youth. The number of friends and family who have enjoyed a sail on Seneca Lake with Bill, whether it be a day sail or, better yet, a night sail could populate a small town. Sail on, good friend. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Joan (Bagley) Oaks and his sister, Carol (Oaks) Wilson and her husband, Lee of Phelps, NY. His sons, Douglass and his wife, Darienne of Shelburne, VT, Mark and his wife, Carolyn of Fabius, NY, Jonathan and his wife, Penny of Marietta, NY, his daughter-in-law, Lisa (Drum) Oaks, and his daughter, Ellen (Oaks) Peterson and her husband, Edward of Horseheads, NY; grandchildren, Linsley Oaks, William R. Oaks, Sara Oaks, Katherine (Oaks) Shaw and her husband, Patrick, Abigail Oaks, Allyson Oaks, Perry Peterson, and Nathaniel O. Peterson; great grandchildren, Harper Shaw and Lennon Shaw. He was predeceased by his son, Michael "Tod" Oaks; his sister, Mary (Oaks ) Timerson, and her husband, Don Timerson.  A memorial service will be held at the Village Marina, Seneca Lake, Watkins Glen, NY, June 4th at 10:00am. PATSON John Patson

age 91, of Lopez, Pa., died Saturday, July 9, 2011 at the Highlands Care Center in Laporte, Pa., with his loving family at his side. John was born in Lopez, Pa., on Oct. 5, 1919 a son of the late Theodore and Theresa Homik Patson. He entered the Army in February of 1942 and served during World War II with the 703rd Tank Destroyer Battalion in the Ardennes, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and Normandy. He returned home in September of 1945 and married the former Josephine Anna Andrewlavage on July 27, 1946. She predeceased him in January 15, 1985.  John worked on construction after the war and then for the Endicott-Johnson Shoe Manufacturing Company in Mildred and later for Dolly Madison in Dushore. After the creamery closed he worked for Carl Weed in Mildred, until he was employed by PennDOT from which he retired.  He planted a very large garden which he maintained until he was 90. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing and playing cards with his family and friends. John was a member of St. Vladimir's Orthodox Church, Lopez, Pa., and McDermott Post No. 452 American Legion, Mildred, Pa.  Surviving are two sons Ronald (Linda) Patson of Lopez, Pa., Joseph (Rita) Patson of Wilmington, Del.; a daughter Jean (James) Minarsky of Mildred, Pa.; sister Anna Orlowski of Whitehall, Pa.; sisters-in-law Rose Andrewlavage of Sayre, Pa., Emily Andrewlavage of Lopez, Pa., Dorothy Andrewlavage of Horseheads, N.Y., Patricia Andrewlavage of Concord, N.C.; brother-in-law Jacob Shaak of Folsom, Pa.; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. PFAFF Richard "Dick" Pfaff

Richard "Dick" Pfaff of Canton, Pa., died on Saturday, June 4, 2011, the result of an ATV accident. He was 81 years old.  Born in Philadelphia on June 23, 1929, Richard was a son of the late Alvin and Hazel (Giere) Pfaff. Upon graduating from Philadelphia's Northeast High School in 1946, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II. A patriot throughout his life, Dick was very proud of his military service.  On July 20, 1963, Dick married the former Judith "Judy" Cole in Bristol, Pa. He and Judy shared 46 years together before her death on April 23, 2009.  Dick worked as a parts man for Jones & Brague Mining Company for many years until its closure and later worked for Cleveland Brothers in Mansfield until retiring in 1991. Dick was a member and past commander of Canton's V.F.W. Post 714. He was also a member of the Canton American Legion Post 303, American Legion Post 534 in Wyalusing and Ralston's Red Run Rod & Gun Club. He especially enjoyed times spent hunting, fishing and playing golf.  Surviving are his son and two daughters, Karl Pfaff of Canton, Lee McClain of Philadelphia and Christine (Randy) Bauman of Denver, Pa.; and four grandchildren.  In addition to his beloved wife, Judy; he was predeceased by a son; a brother; and a sister.  In keeping with Dick's wishes, there will be no public services. RAKER Glenn E. Raker 

During the early morning hours of Saturday, June 25, 2011, well-known Canton resident Glenn E. Raker died quietly at Troy Community Hospital after a brief illness. He was 93 years of age. Born Oct. 6, 1917 in Liberty Township, Tioga County, he was a son of Russell and Margaret (Bastion) Raker. Glenn spent his youth working the family farm, as well as logging and coal mining in the vicinity of Antrim, Pa. In early 1941 he volunteered for service in the U.S. Army. Following our country's entrance into the Second World War Glenn was deployed in the European Theater as part of the 28th Division Field Artillery, but not before he and the love of his life, Catherine Sechrist, were united in marriage on April 24, 1942. After the war the Rakers resided in Canton. Glenn established an auto repair business and his skills as a mechanic were known throughout the community. He retired in the late 1970s. Glenn was a man of great faith in the Lord, and for many years he attended the former Canton Methodist Church where he taught a young people's Sunday School class. Later, he joined the North Union Christian Church. Glenn was a Life Member and an integral part of Canton Lodge No. 415, Free & Accepted Masons, where he served twice as Worshipful Master, served as Guide and mentor for innumerable incoming Brethren and received the Meritorious Service Award. He was also a life member of the Wheel Inn Club. Glenn's warm smile and friendly demeanor endeared him to all who knew him. Though he never had children of his own the kindness and generosity he extended to his nieces and nephews was comparable to that of a devoted father.  Glenn is survived by brothers Robert (and Margaret) Raker of Liberty, Keith (and Esther) Raker of Horseheads, N.Y.; sister Margaret (and Manford) Repard of California; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Margaret Raker; his beloved wife Catherine; sister Bernadine Alexander and brothers John and George "Alvin" Raker.  Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday, June 27 at Morse & Kleese Funeral Home, 94 N. Center St., Canton, Pa., during which a Masonic service will be conducted by the members of Canton Lodge No. 415. A celebration of Glenn's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday with the Rev. RICE Donald W. Rice

89, of Moore Street, Waverly, died on Sunday, May 29, 2011 at the Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa., following a period of declining health. Don was born on October 23, 1921 in Scott Center, Pa., a son of the late Ward and Margarette (Pettit) Rice. He was a veteran of the US Army and proudly served his country during WWII. Don was  a retired employee of the Eclipse Corp in Elmira. On March 27, 1965, he married Marianna Milano. Don enjoyed camping, fishing, tinkering, and completing cross word puzzles. He was a life member of the Owego VFW Post 1371.  Don is survived by his wife of 46 years, Marianna “Anna” Rice; his sons and daughters-in-law: Kenneth W. and Charyle Rice; Thomas E. (Patricia) Rice; a daughter Barbara J. Rice; stepdaughter Cheryl Gallagher; a brother George Rice; sister Hazel Culver; sister-in-law Melvina Rice; grandchildren: Virginia, Charles, Betty, Donnie, Maggie, Francis, Louis, Angie and David; numerous great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and their families also survive.   Don was predeceased by his first wife Betty; sister Doris and brothers Dick, Bill and Bob.  Funeral services for Don will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. RIKER Donald (Don) Ray Riker Jr.

of Litchfield, Pa., died on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011 at his home following an extended illness. Born on Sept. 9, 1926 in Scranton, Pa., he was a son of the late Donald R. Riker and Kathryn Swingle Riker.  Raised in Clarks Summit, Pa., he graduated from Clarks Summit High School where he held the office of senior class president. He enlisted and served in the Army towards the end of World War II training as a clerk and drill instructor at Camp Blanding, Fla.  Immediately after training, he was sent to Kanagawa, Japan, with the 90th military armament team as a medic.   Upon completion of his military service, he attended Keystone Jr. College, transferred to Penn State University and graduated with a bachelors in education for Industrial Arts and Social Studies. After receiving an NBEA scholarship, he earned his Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling at the University of Wyoming in 1966. Don began his teaching and guidance counseling career at Athens High School in 1951. After retiring from education in 1982, he began his second career in building construction.   Don was an active member in the professional educational organizations of AAEA, PSEA and NEA holding various offices. Over the years he participated in the Valley Chorus, VFW, Susquehanna Valley Audobon Society, and Carantouan Greenways. Don was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Athens and Sheshequin.  Mr. Riker was a firm believer in supporting his community. He served on the Athens Borough Council during the 1972 flood. Always civic minded, Don donated railroad documents of his grandfather's to the Steamtown National Historic Site. Locally, he donated his Native American pottery artifacts to S.R.A.C.  Don enjoyed all kinds of music, sports, reading, gardening, birding, and hunting. He especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends and really liked a good party, a cold beer, and a bad joke!  He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Rowland J. Riker, and infant son, Gary David Riker and many close friends. He is survived by Linda his wife and best friend of 32 years; his daughter Beth Ann Howell and her husband Dale of Burke, Va.; and his son Donald John Riker of Johnstown, Pa.  A memorial service and celebration of Don's life will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Don's name can be made to the American Chestnut Foundation, Guthrie Hospice, or to any of the above mentioned organizations that Don supported.   Towanda Daily Review – August 7, 2011

 

ROSENWINKEL Raymond L. Rosenwinkel

age 87, of Sharwill Place in Corning, NY died Sunday, July 10, 2011, at Corning Hospital. Ray was born in Bloomingdale, IL on December 20, 1923, to George and Alma (Edecker) Rosenwinkel. He served his country during World War II in the US Navy aboard the USS Hilbert. From 1948 to 1953 he played professional baseball with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Athletics organizations. In 1952, Ray met and married Jane Marland while he was playing third base for the Corning A's. He settled down in Corning and enjoyed a long career with Corning Glass Works, retiring in 1984. Ray had many wonderful friends. After retirement he enjoyed playing golf, traveling to Florida and Myrtle Beach, and spending time with his family. Ray was also an active member of Faith Lutheran Church. His survivors include his wife, Jane; two children, Katherine (Mark) Adelson of Fayetteville, NY and Thomas (Wendy) Rosenwinkel of Corning; his sister, Eleanor (Carl) Ross of Olathe, KS; two brothers, Leonard (Jeanne) Rosenwinkel and Robert (Carol) Rosenwinkel, both of Wheaton, IL; five grandchildren, Katie Rosenwinkel, Amy (Justin) Starkey, Travis Rosenwinkel, Leah Adelson, and Cara Adelson; along with numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family at Phillips Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Corning. Burial will be in Chapel Knoll Cemetery. SHAFFER Reverend Paul C. Shaffer

88, of Dover, Pa., died on Sunday, June 12, 2011.  Born in Hyndman, on July 8, 1922, he was the son of the late Samuel Clay and Eva Tipton Shaffer.  After graduating from Altoona High School in 1940, he served in the Records Department and as a Chaplain's assistant in the United States Army in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning home, he earned a degree in history from Juniata College where he also met his beloved wife of 61 years, Mona Thompson Shaffer of Altoona. They were married on Aug. 20, 1949, at his first church in Clearville, after being called into the ministry and attending Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C.  Rev. Shaffer served many United Methodist churches throughout central Pennsylvania - Clearville, several in Clearfield County, Altoona, Osceola Mills, Bellefonte, Wellsboro, Harrisburg, York and Hanover. His commitment to Christian Ashrams and preaching continued long after his retirement in 1985, until 2010.  Family and friends were of utmost importance to Rev. Shaffer. He enjoyed his grandchildren, all types of music, traveling, attending the Congress on Evangelism, Massanetta Springs Bible Conference in Virginia and visiting Ocean Grove, N.J. He loved his cars and he loved to drive. He was particularly fond of his 1968 and 2006 matching green Mustangs. Driving cross country with the family and traveling to Israel were special memories.  In addition to his wife, the Rev. Shaffer is survived by his daughters, Joy Shaffer Schneck and her husband, Rusty, and their children, Christopher and Sarah, of Exton; Jill Shaffer Swanson and her husband, Paul Daniel, and their children, Eva and Aubrey, of Boalsburg. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 13, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 340 E. Market St., York with visitation at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Christian Ashrams, 901 So. SMITH Walter J. Smith

88, of Hillcrest Drive, North Towanda, Pa died on Aug.13, 2011 surrounded by his family and friends at his home following a brief period of declining health.  Walter was born on December 22, 1922 in Kenmore, Ohio the son of the late Herman F. and Isabelle (Smith) Smith.  He was  a graduate of Rome High School class of 1941.  On  October 10, 1942 he married L. Lucille Brown and together they celebrated 67 years of marriage.  In February 1943, Walter entered into the US Army and served in action in Germany, Austria and Bavaria and non-combat in the Philippines.  Following an honorable discharge in 1946, Walter began working for Sylvania Electric Company as a Manufacturing Superintendant of the Tungsten Rod and Wire Operation.  He retired in December  1984 following thirty-eight years of service.  Walter was a life member of BPOE ELKS 1148 in Sayre.  Walter was predeceased by his wife of 67 years Lucille on Dec. 29, 2009 and is survived by a brother Richard Smith; brother-in-law Ralph Kissell; sister-inlaw Louise Tucker; a cousin Betty Belle Rhineberge; nephews: Larry (Lois) Brown; Robert (Sharon) Brown; Dale (Marla) Smith; Daryl (Nancy) Smith; Duane (Kim) Smith; Russell Kissell; Richard (Sandra) Kissell; Nieces: Donna (Bill) Repsher; Sharon (Conrad) Winter; Sandra (Carl)  Curtis; Sheila (Ray) Howe; special neighbors Donna and Ray Hoffmann; many great nieces, great nephews and their families also survive.  Walter was predeceased by his wife Lucille; a sister Janice Kissell; sister-in-law: Alma Smith; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Alice and Ernest Meeker; brother-in-law: Walter Brown.  Funeral Services for Walter will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 17th at 1 p.m. at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S. Beaver Dams: Age 84 of Johnson Hollow Rd. Beaver Dams died June 8, 2011. He was born Dec. 26, 1926 in Horseheads. He is survived by his wife of nearly 58 years, Ruth (Lawrence) Stansfield; Daughters and sons, John (Mary) Stansfield of Farmington, NY, Jeffrey (CoraLee) Stansfield of Potter, NY, JoAnn Killingsworth of Beaver Dams, NY, Janet Haynes also of Beaver Dams, NY; Grandchildren, Emily (Scott) Nesbit, Elizabeth (Jason Hermance) Stansfield, Danielle Haynes, Ashley Killingsworth, Todd Allen, Christina Kiss; Great grandchildren, Lauren, Griffin, and Camden; Sister, Marie Blencowe of Swartwood, NY and brother, Thomas (Marilyn) Stansfield of Breesport, NY; And several nieces and nephews. Geneva: Ralph Stilwell, 86, died peacefully at home on Tues. (Aug. 16, 2011). Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Fri. (Aug. 19) at the Palmisano-Mull Funeral Home LLC, 28 Genesee St., Geneva. VALLI Isacco Valli

died at home on August 14, 2011, after an extended illness. Isacco was born on August 6, 1923, in Trescore Balneario, a small town in the foothills of the Alps in Lombardy. The son of Pietro and Maria Valli, he was raised in Bergamo, the provincial capital, where he spent his formative years. While teaching Latin and Philosophy, he married Bartolomea Rottigni, also a teacher, and in 1948 came alone to the United States, where he earned the money to send for his wife and first-born son, Luigi. He worked at Corning Glass Works and Ingersoll Rand, started his own roofing and painting business in the 1950's, and later expanded the business, which became Isacco Valli Construction. During those years, he also earned a BA and an MA at Elmira College and began course work towards his PhD at Cornell University, although he eventually had to stop to devote his time to his growing family and business. An avid skier and tennis player, he frequently returned to Europe to travel and ski in the Alps, eventually visiting every country in Europe as well as Turkey and Egypt, and continuing to ski and play tennis until his mid-80's. He was a member of the Ski Patrol and International Ski Patrol. His favorite author was Plato. Over the years, Isacco was a well-known and familiar face in the local community. He was a member of St. Mary's parish and past president of the Marconi Lodge, where he remained active for many years. He was a past president of the Kiwanis Club in Painted Post, selling hot chestnuts during the Sparkle for Christmas to help raise money for their charitable work. He loved soccer, which he played as a professional in Italy, and was a founder of the athletic department at Corning Community College, organizing a soccer squad which was the first sports team CCC ever fielded. He was a member of the Harris Hill Soaring Association and received the Outstanding Senior Member award for outstanding service and contributions to the Harris Hill Soaring programs. He organized the local contractors association that helped rebuild Corning after the devastating flood of 1972, and played a critical role in establishing the relationship between Corning and San Giovanni Valdarno, her sister city in Italy. Isacco was preceded in death by his older sister, Rina Valli, a long time Corning resident, and his younger brother, Piero, of Como, Italy. He is survived by his wife, Bartolomea (Milly) Valli; six children, Luigi (and his wife Florence), Paolo, Isacco (and his wife Mary), Ubaldo, Elisa (and her husband Sean), and Maria; four grandchildren, Annalisa, Mea, Francesca and Isabella, and a great-granddaughter, Grace. In addition to friends and relatives in the United States he has numerous family and friends in Italy, including two nieces, Marinella and Barbara. He was much loved and will be much missed. Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St., Corning, NY, Friday, August 19, 2011 from 4-8 pm. A prayer service will be offered at the funeral home Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 9:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 am, St. Mary's Church, Corning, NY. Committal prayers and Interment will take place in the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning, NY. The family would appreciate memorial donations be given in Isacco's name to the Kiwanis Club of Painted Post, P.O. Box 275, Painted Post, NY 14870 or to the Marconi Lodge, 26 W. WHEATE Norman E.

Age 88 and formerly of Horseheads passed away at the Bath VA Medical Center on June 16, 2011. He is survived by his sons, Douglas and Stewart and several dear friends and caregivers. Norm was retired from Elmira Savings Bank as their assistant Treasurer. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. ? Rosemary BURNS

MRS. ROSEMARY BURNS age 88, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 9th 2011 in New Milford. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Francis Burns and is survived by her son, Robert Daniel Burns of Vero Beach, Fla.; and daughter, Elizabeth Burns-Klingele and son-in-law, Al Klingele of Woodbury. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Jaime Hoffman of Stamford, Ms. Heather Pizzarello of Philadelphia, Pa. and Jason Pizzarello of Queens, N.Y.; and one great-grandchild. Rosemary was born and raised in Elmira, N.Y. and graduated nursing school there as well. She raised her family in Riverside, and attended St Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside. Rosie loved to golf and enjoyed gardening. She served in the Navy during World War II. At the conclusion of the war, she was a nurse in Greenwich Hospital and did private duty work as well. The family will be holding a memorial service at the Chapel of St Catherine's Church on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 10am. Friends and family are welcome to attend.  Greenwich Time – July 14, 2011
