Matthew, called "Deke," was son of Eunice Northrup Wilson and Rufus Smith who had migrated from Ridgefield, Connecticut to join her mother and (step) father in Sullivan Township, Tioga County PA about 1822. Matthew married Polly Marie Comfort, daughter of Sarah Head and John Comfort.
