Mansfield Dairy League Closes
As many as 35 were employed at the old Condensory pictured on right above.The new plant on left used only for receiving milk, employed 4 at the time it closed.. The small volume of milk now taken in at the Mansfield plant was given as the reason for closing. Many local farms having gone on the direct tank system.
The Mansfield Dairymen's League Plant closed its doors October 1 and dairymen transferred their milk to the Wellsboro Borden Plant after nearly 50 years of continuous operation in Mansfield.
Sixty producers were transferred to the Wellsboro Plant with only one of that number hauling his own milk. All the others are in trucking pools.
The Mansfield Branch of Dairymen's League Inc. was organized in the fall of 1916 and winter of 1917. The first officers elected were Orlando Watkins, Pres. Wesley E. Clark,Secy. F. Lewis Starkey,Treas. On April 17th,1917 a new board of officers were elected. Pres. V.B. O'dell, Sec'y, Geo. C. Barden,Treas. E.M.Stuart,Business Mgr.,N.M. Beach.
The members grew until Dec. 31st, 1920 there were 220 had joined the organization of the Mansfield Local. A total of 1706 cows were signed up.
Oct. 1, 1920 notices were posted on the plants of the Mansfield Dairy Co., that they would close. This put the patrons of the plants in a position where it was necessary to do something to help themselves. A Committee was appointed to interview Mr. W.D. Rose,Pres. of the Mansfield Dairy in regard to manufacturing the millk of patrons. An agreement was reached that his company take the milk and manufacture it at the expense of the patrons and pay the balance to them.This was for three months, Oct, Nov. and Dec.,1920. While this was being done the Dairymen's League Members raised the money to either build plants or buy the ones owned by the Mansfield Dairy Co., and the deal was closed Jan. 1st, 1921 the poolling system known as the Dairymen's League Coop. Assn. Inc. came into being .
The plants consisted of Mansfield, Seeley Creek, Jobs Corners,Roseville and Mainesburg.
The first superintendent of Mansfield plant was Ray C.. Fuller followed by E.R. McLaurey, Oscar M. Lutes, Julius M. Young, Slade Jacobs, Dave J. Nelsh, Carlos C. Camenga, Oscar M. Lutes (returned) and Ferris Lutes.
The Condensory was built in Oct. 1905 and dismantled in 1951 and the new modern shipping plant was built and operated until closing Oct. 1st, 1961.
George Barden who was a pioneer member was secretary for ten years.
