PENSION APPLICATIONS OF WILLIAM SCOTT AND HIS WIDOW MARY STANCLIFF
SCOTT
SUBMITTED BY LENORE MURRAY, CHESHIRE, CT.

WILLIAM SCOTT – REVOLUTIONARY WAR RECORDS Page from a record book –
a filled in form. Pennsylvania (506) Mary Scott widow of William Scott
of Bradford Co. in the state of Penna, who was a private in the company
commanded by Captain ______of the regt commanded by Col. Van Cortland in
the New York line for two years.
Inscribed on the Roll of Pennsylvania at the rate of 80 dollars-cents
per annum to commence the 4th day of March 1831. Certificate
of Pension issued the 20 day of February 1837—and sent to Hon. S. McKean
S.U.S. arrears to the 4th of Semi-an. Allowance ending 4 March
$40. Revolutionary Claim 6 July 1836. Recorded by Wm. Allison (?), Clerk

State of Pennsylvania, Bradford County ss Before James Gerould Esq a
Justice of the Peace in & for the said County personally appeared Mary
Scott and being duly sworn and in due form of Law on her solemn oath deposith
and saith that she was lawfully married to William Scott in the town of
Woodbury – in the County of Litchfield and State of Connecticut on the
____day of August 1773 and has lived with him and remained his wife to
the time of his decease which occurred on the 8th day of April
1834 at the township of Smithfield in the County of Bradford & State
of Pennsylvania, that the said William Scott her said husband was an applicant
for a pension as a Soldier of the Revolution under the act of Congress
of the 7th June 1832 – and that his pension had not been allowed
at the time of his decease on the 8th of April 1834 as aforesaid
– that she verily believes he the said William was justly entitled to a
pension for services rendered the Country to wit the United States during
the War of the Revolution, and as his Widow she hereby relinquishes all
claim to a pension on his account as Quarter-Master and requests that a
pension may be granted on account of his Services as a private Soldier
in the Revolutionary War. Mary Scott (her mark) Sworn and Subscribed the
2nd day of May 1834 before me – James Gerould Justice of the
peace.
I hereby certify that the above named Mary Scott is a person of truth
and veracity and that I am personally acquainted with her & believe
her Statements aforesaid to be fully correct May 2nd 1834. James

William Scott dec’d Bradford Co in the State of Pennsylvania he was a private

Sheet #4 – State of New York, Cayuga County ss. Olive
Barber. Being duly sworn deposes and says that she is a sister to Mary
Scott the widow of William Scott deceased, and that the said Mary and William
were lawfully Married before the Revolutionary war sometime in the Year
1773 and depouses---was present at the Solemnization of said Marriage in
Woodbury, now Southbury in Connecticutt, and at the time of the decease
of the said William Scott he and the said Mary his wife resided in the
Town of Smithfield, Bradford County State of Pennsylvania. Sworn and Subscribed
Feby 6th 1837 before me Allen Thomas. Just. Peace Signed Olive

I do hereby certify that Olive Barber the above named deposant is personally
known to me and is a credible person, and that her statement is entitled

Sheet #5 – Cayuga County Clerks Office ss. I Benjamin
F. Hall Deputy Clerk of the County of Cayuga do hereby Certify that Allen
Thomas Esq before whom the above affidavit was taken was at the time of
taking said affidavit a Justice of the Peace in and for said County. Commissioned
and sworn and duly authorized to take the same and further that I am well
acquainted with the hand writing of said Justice and verily believe his
signature above to be genuine. Given under my hand and Seal of the Court
of Common Pleas in & for said County this 7th day of February

My Dear Sir
My Neighbor Mr. John Scott has just called & desired me to forward
the enclosed documents to the War Department, as I am in great haste inclosing
the Mail I take liberty to inclose them to your charge with full assurance
of their being duly attended to – Please assertain whether the Affidavit
is acceptable, & inform me of the result – I have only time to say
that I am gratified to learn by the Globe that far recovered from indisposition
as to be able to resume your Seat in the Senate, & that a letter from
you stating some of the events of this Winter Campaign would be highly
gratifying to – Your Old friend Hon McKean ______G
Sheet #7 – Declaration in order to obtain the benefit
of the third section of the act of Congress of the 4th July
1836. State of Pennsylvania, Bradford County ss On this 30th
day of November 1836 personally appeared before me John McKean Esq as Associate
Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of said county Mary Scott a resident
of Smithfield township in the County of Bradford & State of Pennsylvania
aged eighty five years on the 29th day of September last past
who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following
declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the
act of Congress passed July 4, 1836 That she is the widow of William Scott
who applied for a pension under the act of Congress of 1832 (June 7th)
which pension was allowed to the said Mary after his decease which took
place in the 8th of April 1834 & was at the rate of Eighty
dollars per year & that the pension certificate was by reason of his
decease issued to the said Mary – that a full statement of his services
accompanied his said application – that he served at various times &
under various officers during the revolutionary war as a private the particulars
of which from the lapse of time she cannot particularly recollect but she
remembers he was in the service of the United States for a large portion
of the time during the Revolutionary War that he served at one time for
nine months under Col. Cortland – that she recollects he was in the vicinity
of Monmouth at the time of the battle there and was also in the battle
of Stillwater & that he was at Shoharie when that was burned – the
details of which together with the names of the officers under which he
served are set forth in his application which was forwarded to the war
department in the aforesaid act of 1832 – She further declares that she
was married to the said William Scott in the later part of the month of
August in the year seventeen hundred & seventy three. The precise day
she cannot recollect & that her husband the aforesaid William Scott
died on the 8th day of April 1834 and that she has remained
a widow ever since that period as will more fully appear by references
in the proof annexed hereto. Sworn to and subscribed before me this 20th

Sheet #8 – I certify that the above named Mary Scott is
a person of credibility whose statements are entitled to full credit &
that she is unable by reason of age & bodily infirmity to attend the
Court of Common Pleas of Bradford County. John McKean, associate Judge
State of Pennsylvania – Bradford County ss. I J. C. Powell Prothonotary
of the court of Common Pleas of said County do certify that John McKean
is an Associate Judge in and for the county of Bradford duly Commissioned
and qualified and that the foregoing Signatures purporting to be his are
genuine.
In testamony where of I have business -----official seal this -----day
of December in the ----eight hundred and thirty six. SEAL J. C. Powell

Sheet #9 – State of Pennsylvania – Bradford County ss.
On this 30th day of November 1836 personally appeared John Scott
& Sally Scott both of said county & being both duly sworn on their
oath respectively so say – that they were acquainted with the above named
William Scott in his life time and were present at the time of his death
which occurred on the 8th day of April 1834 & that his former
wife and present widow has lived with the family of these deponents since
the time of his death & has remained single & unmarried from the
time of this deathe to the present time. Sworn and subscribed this 20th
November 1836 before me John McKean associate Judge Bradford Cty Penna

Sheet #10 and #11 - On this 26th day of September
1832 Personally appeared before me this Subs one of the associate Judges
of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the county of Bradford and the
State of Pa. Wm Scott a resident in & of Smithfield Township in the
county and State aforesaid aged eighty four years who being first duly
sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the Following declaration
in order to obtain the benefit of the provissions made by the Act of Congress
passed June 7, 1832 who says he was born in Rhinebeck- - Dutchess county
County in the State of New York in Sept. 1748 that he entered the service
of the United States in the Revolutionary War in July 1775 he inlisted
in Albany in the State of New York for Six months under the following named
officers in a Company commanded by Captain Barent Ten Neck in Col. Van
Schanks Brigt & Marched to – Isle of Nox fifteen miles from St. Johns
in lower Canada & continued in the service with the exception of two
or three weeks until March 1776 Gen’l Schuyler – Commanded during this
time he was sent with others by General Montgomery from the Isle of Nox
with Luke LaDux in Batteaus to Ticonderoga. Was in no engagement was discharged
by Gen’l Schuyler in March 1776 at Ticonderoga in the State of New York
thinks he had a written discharge but that it is lost he again entered
the service of the United at Ticonderoga by taking the place of an uncommissioned
officer at P. Ticonderoga Landing for Six months. Captain Van Sanford was
the commanding officer at that Place in Col. Wincoops Reg’t & served
six Months & was discharged in Nov. 1776 by Gen’l Gates at Ticonderoga
during the last mentioned tour he was in an engagement with the enemy -
- - thru - - - Point the enemy having landed then and was in two skirmishes
previous to this. Thinks he had a written discharge but if he did it is
lost. He again entered the service as a Volunteer as a Volunteer in Kinderhook
in the State of New York in April 1777 as quarter Master under Captain
Isaac Van Valkenburgh in a Regt commanded by Col. Abraham J. Van Alstine
were called for the Northern Army & was at the taking of the British
Redoubt at Stillwater and at the taking of Burgoyne at Saratoga and then
assisted the Commissioners in the winter in Albany county in the State
of New York on taking property that belonged to tories that had joined
the Enemy & others Went as an officer with Sargent Lisse to search
for robers (sic) and tories & took a number of them & Continued
in Service until the latter part of the winter of 1778 & was out of
the service a few days & again enlisted into the Service of the United
States in Kinderhook in the State of New York for Nine months – he was
inlisted to fill up the standing Forces & went to Albany to be Mustered
& go as he had served as Quarter Master before he was appointed as
Quarter Master for the party and served as such from Albany to Valley Forge
in the State of Pennsylvania when he joined Genl Washingtons Army under
Captain Wm Pell Served about eight months and had a furlough for about
a month Col Courtlant (who acted also as Gnl) observed to this Lieutenant
at the time of giving the furlough that he expected he wanted not to be
called on again as the term for which he enlisted would expire by the time
his furlough expired & this Lieutenant saw some of those that entered
the service with him for nine months returning & they informed him
that themselves & him were dismissed from the service. During the mentioned
time of service he went with Genl Arnold to Philadelphia and assisted in
driving the British from the city & from there he went to Valley Forge
& from there he marched to Monmouth & was in the battle of Monmouth
& from there he marched to White Plains & from there he marched
to Fishkill & from there to Ulster County & then to - - - - M-
- - - in the same county where he Rec’d the furloughalready mentioned Genl
James Clinton Commanded the Brigade to which he was attached & Major
Firth (?) was our Brigade Major he again served as Quarter Master in 1779
for the Wagoners of Columbia County under Captain Abraham Tinnda (?) he
served as Lieutenant & Quarter Master he thinks he served about a month
The wagoners mentioned was engaged in carrying provisions & baggage
for the army to Otsego Lake in the State of New York that were to descend
the River to join the army of Genl Sullivan at Tioga Point in the State
of Pa he again enlisted into the service of the United States in Kinderhook
in the State of New York in 1779 & served about six weeks as first
sargent & Quarter Master under Lieutenant James McLane went from Kinderhook
to Fort Herkimer at German flats During the last mentioned tour the corps
to which he belonged was sent for to go to Germantown to oppose the indians
who were annoying the citizens of that place he & Troops to which he
was attached went & drove the indians from Germantown he again served
as Quarter Master in 1779 under Captain Van Allen and Lieutenant James
R- - -(?) in Col Watermans Regt thinks he served between two and three
months this time during the last mentioned tour he marched from Kinderhook
(where he enlisted) to Fishkill & from there to Peakskill & from
there back to Fishkill where he was dismissed had no written discharge
he again entered into the service of the United States in the month of
May 1780 under Capt. Fusdale & Lieutenant Chapman & served as Quarter
Master about one month again Served as Quarter Master & First Sargent
in 1780 one month under Lieutenant Dubois he again served in 1780 as Quarter
Master under Lieutenant Peter Venaler as first Sargent & Quarter Master
one month he again enlisted in 1780 & Served three Months at Schoharie
as first Sargent & Quarter Master under Captain Steiffle Miten &
Lieutenant Miten & was in an Engagment with the British & Indians
when part of Schoharie was burnt & when the Enemy was repulsed &
retreated to upper Canada he doesn’t know that there is anyone living that
can prove his service has no documentary evidence of his service he says
there is a record of his age in Dutchess County in the State of New York
he says he has lived since the Revolutionary War in Hoosick in Bennington
in the State of Vermont & for the last part fourteen years he has lived
in Smithfield in the County of Bradford & State of Pennsylvania he
states the names of Genl Dennis Bullock of Smithfield & Genl Saml McKean
of Burlington & Col. Saml Satterlee & James Gerold Esq of Smithfield
who can testify as to his veracity & their belief of his services as
a soldier of the Revolution he hereby relinquishes every claim to a pension
or annuity except the present & declares his name is not on the pension
role of the agency of any State..... Sworn to the day & year aforesaid

in the Township of Smithfield in the County of Bradford & State of
Pennsylvania hereby certify that we are well acquainted with the Wm Scott
who has Sworn to the above Declaration that we believe him to be Eighty
four years of age that he is respected to and believed to be a – soldier
of the Revolution in the neighborhood where he resides & that we concur
in that opinion -- Sworn and Subscribed The day and year aforesaid Before
me Jm. McKean associate Judge Bradford County State of Pa - James Gerould

Sheet #14 - I certify that the forgoing names Wm Scott
from bodily infirmity is unable to attend the court I also certify that
the above named James Gerould & Luther Adams (I believe) to be credible
Persons & that their charactor for truth and veracity is good – September

Sheet #15 - I John Doty a clergyman residing in Smithfield
in the County of Bradford in the County of Bradford & State of Pennsylvania
hereby certify that I am well acquainted with Wm Scott who has sworn to
the forgoing Declaration that I believe him to be Eighty four years of
age that he is respected & believed in the neighborhood where he Resides
to have been a Soldier of the Revolution & that I can concur in that

Bradford County – I James P. Bull Prothonotary (or clerk) of the Court
of Common Pleas of Bradford County do hereby ceertify that John McKean
before whom the forgoing proceedings were had now and at thie date thereof
was an associate Judge of the several courts of Bradford County And I further
certify that I am acquainted with the hand writing of said Judge &
believe the foregoing signature purporting to be his to be genuine in Witness
whereof I have here set my name to the seal of the said court this 28th
day of September AD 1832 - for J.P. Bull – E. L. Goodrich
Sheet #16 – State of Pennsylvania Bradford County - Personally
appeared before me the subscribed a justice of the peace in aforesaid county
William Scott who being duly sworn deposes and saith that by reason of
old age & the consequent loss of memory he cannot swear positively
as to the precise length of his service but according to the best of his
recollection he served not less than the time as mentioned below in the
following:
For seven months I served as private in Col Van Schanks regt of New
York militia as set forth in the foregoing declaration.
For six months I went as Quarter Master in Capt Van Sanford’s company
Col Wincoops regt – doing duty as quarter master for the regt I was discharged
by Genl Gates as set forth in the foregoing declaration.
For ten months I went as quarter master in Col Van Alstine’s regt commencing
in 1777 spending the better part of the winter of 1778 as set forth in
the foregoing declaration.
For eight months I served as Quarter Master in Col Philip Courtlands
regt in the continental line as set forth in the foregoing declaration.
For one month I served as Quarter Master under Capt Abraham Fonda as
set forth in the foregoing declaration 1779.
For one month and twelve days I served as first srgt & Quarter Master
under Lieut James McLane as set forth in the foregoing declaration in 1779
For two months and fifteen days I served as Quarter Master in Col Watermans
regt as set forth in the foregoing declaration 1779
For one month I served as Quarter Master and 1st sargent
in Col Van Alstine’s Regt & in Capt Fusdales company as set forth in
the foregoing declaration in 1780
For one month I served as Quarter Master and 1st Sgt. In
a town with Lieut Dubois belinging to Van Alstine’s regt as set forth in
the foregoing declaration 1780
For one month I served as Quarter Master and 1st sargt in
a town with Lieut. Peter Venaler belonging to Van Alstine’s regt in 1780
as set forth in the foregoing declaration
For three months I served as Quarter Master and 1st Sargent
in a town with Capt Stiffle Miten in Col Livingstons regt as set forth
in the foregoing declaration the foregoing all being in the New York service
except the service under Col Courtland which was in the New York Line and
for such service I claim a pension (the words "1st sargt interlined
before signing) sworn and subscribed this 29th day of May 1833
before me James Gerould, Justice of the Peace – William Scott – his mark
I certify that William Scott above named is blind & unable to write
his name James Gerold – Justice of the Peace
Sheet #17 – State of Pennsylvania Bradford County ss Personally
appeared John Scott aged 52 years who being duly sworn deposeth & saith
that his Father William Scott within names died at the House of this deponent
in Smithfield Township in the County of Bradford & State of Pennsylvania
on the 8th day of April 1834 – also that he was an applicant
for a pension as stated in the within deposition of Mary Scott – John Scott
– Sworn and Subscribed this 2nd day of May 1834 before me and
I certify that the above named John Scott is a man of truth & veracity
and that his Statements are entitled to full credit – James Gerould – Justice
of the Peace
Also personally appeared George Gerold and being duly Sworn deposeth
& saith that he was at the House of the above named John Scott on the
8th day of April 1834 – he saw the body of his Father William
Scott then recently deceased and was informed by the family of the said
John Scott that the said William Scott died on that day to wit the 8th
April 1834 – George Gerould –Sworn and subscribed this 2nd day
of May 1834 before me and I certify that the above named George Gerould
is a man of truth & veracity and that his Statements are entitled to
full credit – James Gerould Justice of the Peace
I am acquainted with James Gerould Esq the above named Justice of the
Peace and with his hand writing and knew the above to be his official signature

Sheet #18 – Bradford County – I James P. Bull Prothonotary
of the court of Common Pleas of Bradford County do Certify that James Gerould
fore whom the within affidavit purports to have been sworn was at the date
thereof Known and Recognized in said court as a duly qualified peace And
that I am acquainted with his hand writing and believe the within Signature
perporting to be his genuine – Witness my hand and Seal of Office this
