This is a transcription of the Guardianship Documents of the Children of Jesse Hancock, Bradford County, PA by Diana HANCOCK Moilanen
I will attach a couple of items about my Hancock family from Bradford County in case you wish to use them on your site.  Colonel John Hancock was my great, great grandfather who was born in Wyalusing, and moved to Oshkosh, WI and died in City Point, WI and buried in Oshkosh.  He and his brother, William, were sons of Jesse and Louisa Hancock.  Diana Moilanen

Documents relating to Jesse Hancock death and guardianship of his children

First, administration of estate:

Know all men by these presents, That we, Louisa Hancock, Leroy Hancock, Jesse Ross and H. Ross are held and firmly bound unto the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in the sum of One Thousand dollars, lawful money, to be paid to the said commonwealth; to which payment well and truly to be made, we do bind ourselves, and each of us, for and in the whole, our and each of our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and severally by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated the Eleventh day of February Anno Domini 1835.

The condition of this obligation is such, That if the within bounden Louisa Hancock & Leroy Hancock administrators of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of Jesse Hancock deceased, do make, or cause to be made a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession or knowledge of them the said Louisa & Leroy or into the hands and possession of any other person or persons, for them and the same, so made, do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, into the register’s office, in the county of Bradford, at or before the Thirteenth day of March next ensuing; and the same goods, chattels and credits, and all the other goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, at the time of his death, which at any time after shall come to the hands or possession of any other person or persons, for then and the same, so made, do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, into the register’s office, in the county of Bradford, at or before the Thirteenth day of March next ensuing; and the same goods, chattels and credits, and all the other goods, chattels and credits of the said deceased, at the time of his death, which at any time after shall come to the hands or possession of any other person or persons, for them do well and truly administer according to law; and further do make or cause to be made, a true and just account of their said administration, at or before the Eleventh day of February 1836; and all the rest and residue of the said goods, chattels and credits, which shall be found remaining upon the said administrators account, the same being first examined and allowed of, by the orphan’s court of the county where the said administration is granted, shall deliver and pay unto such person or persons, respectively, as the said orphan’s court, b their sentence or decree pursuant to the true intent and meaning of this act, shall limit and appoint, and if it shall hereafter appear that any last will and testament was made by the deceased, and the executor or executors therein named do exhibit the same into the said register’s office, making request to have it allowed and approved accordingly, if the said administrators within bounden, being thereunto required, do render and deliver the said letters of administration, approbation of such testament being first had and made, in the said register’s office, then this obligation to be void and of none effect, or else to remain in full force and virtue. Second Jesse Ross appointed Guardian:
  1. Jesse Ross Guardian of Loyd Hancock, Elizabeth Hancock and Jerusha Hancock No. 5
September 10th 1839 the Petition of Loyd Hancock Elizabeth Hancock and Jerusha Hancock is presented setting forth that the petitioners are minor children above the age of fourteen years of Jesse Hancock deceased late of Pike Township in Bradford County that they have no persons legally authorized to take care of their persons or estates and they pray the court that they may be permited to make choice of a suitable guardian for that purpose, and being permited they and each of them makes choice of Jesse Ross who is approved of by the Court and appointed guardian of each of said minor and ordered to give back in the sum of $200 for each minor and the Court approve of Stephen Brink as such Bail---bonds filed for each minor.

289 Jesse Ross Guardian of John Hancock, Mary Hancock and Henry Hancock

No. 6

September 10th 1839 the Petition of John Hancock, Mary Hancock & Henry Hancock minor children of Jesse Hancock deceased by Leroy Hancock their brother is presented setting fourth that the Petitioners are under the age of fourteen years and have no person legally authorized to take charge of their persons and estates and praying the Court to appoint some suitable person for that purpose. Wherefore the Court appoint Jesse Ross Guardian of each of said minors and order and direct that said Guardian give each in the sum of $200 for each minor & approve of Stephen Brink as such Bail---bonds filed for each minor same day.



Third 777 Guardian account of Jesse Ross

Guardians acct Feb 8th 1844 The accounts of Jesse Ross Guardian of Lloyd Hancock, Elisabeth Hancock, Jerusha Hancock, Henry Hancock, John Hancock and Mary Hancock by his administrator George W. Ross was presented by the Register for Confirmation and allowance ______said Guardian charges himself with assets $18.61 and claims payment for benefit of Minors schooling See files.

And now to wit Feb 8th confirmed vi si and now to wit May 18th 1844 the above refered to E. S. Goodrich as auditor. And now to wit Dec 9th 1844 the Court appoint Darius Bullock an auditor in this in the place of E. S. Goodrich.

And now to wit Jan 3, 1845 Geo. W. Ross enters a rule for a commission to James Dunn & Thomas Maxwell to take the testimony of Mrs. Charlotte Ross a witness residing a Elmira in the state of New York---Where said commissioners also reside—on ten days notice—Interogatories filed same day—commission to James Dunn and Thomas Maxwell ______January 14th A. D. 1845.

And now to wit the 13 day of February 1845 the appointment of the auditor revoked and the account confirmed.



Fourth 431 Lewis Luckey Bosworth Guardian for Mary Hancock

Dec 12th A. D. 1893 The petition of William Hancock was presented setting forth that Mary Hancock Minor child of Jesse Hancock Dec’d is under the age of fourteen years and that her late Guardian Jesse Ross is now deceased and praying the Court to appoint a Guardian to take charge of her person and property whereupon the Court Lewis L. Bosworth Guardian of said Minor and further order and direct bonds with surety in the sum of six hundred dollars Bond filed May 18th 1844
