Sir:

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 31.623, and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this Office.

It appears from the Rolls on file in this Office, that George H. Bockus was enrolled on the 26th day of September, 1861, at Charleston, Pa., in Co. AG@ 45th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war, and mustered into service as a Private on the 14th day of October, 1861, at Harrisburg, Pa., in Co. AG@, 45th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, to serve three years, or during the war. On the Muster Roll of Co. AG@ of that Regiment, for the months of August and September, 1863, he is reported a private ADied at Milldale, Miss., August 1, 1863.

WIDOW ARMY PENSION
 
 

STATE OF Pennsylvania ) ) County of Tioga ) On this twenty-sixth day of August a. D. 1863, personally appeared before me the Prothonotary of the Common Pleas Court of the said County and State Jane Eliza Bockus a resident of Charleston township in the County of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania aged thirty six years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress, approved July 14th, 1862, that she is the widow of George H. Bockus who was a private in Company AG@ commanded by Capt. R. G. Richards in the 45th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers in the War of 1861, who died at or near Milldale Mississippi on the first day of August A. D. 1863 of disease contracted while in the service.

The further declares that she was married to the said George H. Bockus on the first day of September in the year 1840 that her husband the aforesaid George H. Bockus died on the day above mentioned and that she has remained a widow ever since that period, as will more fully appear by reference to the proof hereto annexed. She also declares that she has not, in any manner, been engaged in, or aided or abetted the rebellion in the UNITED STATES and that there is no record evidence of her said marriage.

Jane Eliza Bockus of Charleston township in the said County and State who being duly sworn - declares and says that she is the widow of George H. Bockus - who was a private in Company AG@ of the 45th Reg. Pa. Volunteers and who died at Milldale, Mississippi on the first day of August AD 1863 - that she has made application for a pension under the pension Act of July 14, 1862 - that she is the mother of eight children who are under sixteen years of age who are the only children of said George H. Bockus under sixteen years of age and whose names and ages are as follows respectively - to wit: Susan Bockus aged 15 years 29th day of Apr. 1863

Silas G. Bockus 12 years 20th day of Sept. 1862

Delane Bockus 11 years 3rd day of Oct. 1862

Jeremiah Bockus 8 years 6th day of Aug. 1863

That their residences are all at Charleston township in the County of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania.

Volunteers who being duly sworn says that he has been for many years well acquainted with George H. Bockus who was a private in the same company and that the said George H. Bockus died and was buried on the lst day of August 1863 at Milldale, Mississippi - and that he knows the fact of his death from personal observation, all of which is true and correct to the best of his knowledge and belief.

Bockus which took place on the lst day of September AD 1840 - at Stratford in Fulton County and State of New York that the marriage ceremony was performed by Bradley Bennett, Esq. A Justice of the Peace in and for the said Fulton County that there is no record of the said marriage - all of which is true and correct to the best of his knowledge and belief.

State of Penna. ) ) ss County of Tioga ) Personally appeared before me George Peak and Paulina Peak, residents of Charleston, Tioga Co., Penna who after being duly sworn deposth and saith that they were well acquainted with George H. Bockus in his lifetime being a near neighbor to him for many years before and at the time he entered the service, and that they were not only well acquainted with him, but with the different members of his family. That they have been informed and believe that his wife, Jane Eliza Bockus was married to Hiram Mossman, on October 16, 1864, and that the following named are the only legitimate children left by the said George H. Bockus at the time of his decease under the age of sixteen years: Silas Bockus, aged 15 years, Lena Bockus, aged 13 years, Jeremiah Bockus, aged 11 yrs., Carissa Bockus, aged 9 years, Ida Bockus, aged 7 ys., Derilla Bockus aged, 5 years, Amy Bockus, aged 4 years, C That no public record was or is kept of the births of children of this state neither is none now or then required to be kept by law. That the above named on the children of the above named Jane Eliza Bockus C and that they have no interest, in the prosecution of this claim.

State of Pennsylvania ) ) ss County of Tioga ) On this 22d day of September 1879 personally came before me a clerk of the Court this same being a court of record within and for said County, Susan Pake, who being duly sworn declares that she is 29 years of age the 29th day of April 1879: that she is a child of George H. Bockus who enlisted in Co. AG@ 45th Regiment Penna. Volls. And who was mustered into the service of this united states in said organization on the 18th day of September 1861. And who died while a member of said organization and in line of duty at Milldale, Miss. August 1st 1862 -- Declarant further states that a pension was granted by the United States to her mother, Jane E. Bockus, and after her marriage to her brothers and sisters, viz. Clara, Jerry, Ida, William and Lana Bockus and that her name was not included by the guardian, Charles Coolidge, and consequently she has never applied, nor been applied for by guardian for pension due her on account of the death of her father, neither has she ever received a pension from the United States. She therefore makes this application for the purpose of receiving the pension due her as such child from the time of her said fathers death in the Army until her arrival at the age of sixteen years, that she was born on the 29th day of April 1850 - and she hereby appoints Henry M. Fort of Wellsboro, Tioga County, Pa. Her true and lawful attorney to pursue this claim. That her residence and post office address is Little Marsh, Tioga Co., Pa.

State of Pennsylvania ) ) ss County of Tioga ) On this sixteenth day of February AD. 1864, personally appeared before me the Prothonotary in and for said County --John Bockus of Stratford in Fulton County and State of New York C who being duly sworn does declare and say that he is the brother of George H. Bockus late of Tioga Co. Pennsylvania, deceased, and was present at the marriage of said George H. Bockus and Jane Eliza Rockwell which took place at the town of Stratford aforesaid and that the said marriage was solemnized by Bradley Bennett Esq. One of the Justices of the Peace for said County C on the first day of September 1840 C that said Bradley Bennett is now dead C that he has every reason to believe that there is no record of said marriage.

State of Pennsylvania ) ) ss County of Tioga ) Personally appeared Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas before me for said County and state, Mrs. Clarissa Hardy, a resident of Charleston, Tioga Co. Penna a person whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, who after being duly sworn deposeth and saith, That she has been a near neighbor to Jane Eliza Mossman (formerly Jane Eliza Bockus) for the last thirteen years, and that the following named children of her, by the said George H. Bockus, which I certify are the only children of the said George H. Bockus who were under sixteen years of age at the time of their father=s death, vis Silas Bockus, aged 15 yrs., Lena Bockus, aged 13 yrs., Jeremiah Bockus aged 11 yrs., Clarissa Bockus, aged 9 yrs., Ida Bockus aged 7 yrs., Derilla Bockus aged 5 yrs, and Amy Bockus aged 4 yrs. She also deposeth and saith that she was personally present at the births of all but the two first born of the above named and that the ages are correctly given, as above. That the attending physician Dr. C. K. Thompson, has left the County and that his address is unknown, being engaged in some of the southern hospitals and that I have no interest direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim.

On this 6th day of May 1880, personally appeared before me Susan Pope who being duly sworn declares that she is a daughter of George H. Bockus who was a member of Co. AG@ 45th Regt. Penna. Volls and who died while a member of said organization and in line of duty--on or about the first day of August 1863. That affiant was born on the 29th day of April 1850: That she has never received a pension from the United States on account of the death of her said father, and she herewith files her application for the purpose of securing this arreage of pension due her from the time of her said father=s death until she arrived at the age of sixteen years--that her post office address is Ansonia, Tioga County, Pa. And her residence is Shippen Township in said County.

Pleas within and for the County and state above named personally appeared Amos Chapman aged ____ years a resident of Charleston, Tioga Co., Pa who being duly sworn says that he is a minister of the Gospel residing at Charleston Tioga County Pa and that as such minister he did unite in marriage Hiram Mossman and Eliza Jane Bockus at Charleston Tioga County, Penna on the 16th day of October 1864. That there is no public record of said marriage as deponent verily believes that deponent neither made nor authorized to be made any public church record of said marriage. That it was not customary among the people of said County at the time of said marriage to record marriages in town or County records, nor required by the laws of said County or state as deponent is informed and believes. And that deponent derives the facts of said marriage from a written memorandum made by himself at the time of said marriage And that he has no interest in this claim.

State of Pennsylvania ) ) ss County of Tioga ) Personally appeared before me Prothy of the Court of Common Pleas in and for the County and state above named, Joseph Mossman and Adaline Frost who after being duly sworn say that they have for more than ten years been acquainted with the family of George H. Bockus, late a private of Company G of the 45th Regiment Volunteers, having lived during that whole time in the same neighborhood with them, and have seen their children almost every day or week, and believe that the statement above made, by their mother, Eliza Jane Bockus, (now Eliza Jane Mossman) to be a true and correct statement of their ages, and they form this opinion from their appearance, size, and the way they are generally respected in the neighborhood. And that we are not interested in this application.

And that as such he publicly joined in marriage on 16th October A.D. 1864 one Hiram Mossman and Jane Eliza Bockus widow of George H. Bockus at his residence in Charleston Tioga Co., Penna. That he has no public record of said marriage and that none is required to be kept by the laws of Pennsylvania, and that he has no interest either direct or indirect in the prosecution of this claim. Bockus under 16 years of age and their ages are as follows and that they are the only ones under 16 years:

County of Tioga ) ) ss State of Penna ) Personally appeared before me one of the Justices of the Peace in and for the County and state above named, this seventh day of November 1866, Dr. C. K. Thompson, a person whom I certify to be a respectable physician and surgeon, and in active practice, who after being duly sworn according to Law, deposeth and saith, That he was well acquainted with George Bockus in his life time, who was a member of Co. AG@ of the 45th Regiment, Penna Vols. That he was the family physician of the said George Bockus, and as such attended his wife, Eliza Jane Bockus, in the birth of the following named children:

Ida Bockus Born May 13, 1857

That the said Eliza Jane, at the births of her other minor children was attended by Mrs. Jenny Peake, who was a midwife and attended her as such, as he has been informed and believes, and that the said Jenny Peake is now dead, and that he has no interest in this prosecution.

County of Tioga ) ) ss State of Penna ) Before me, the Subscriber, Prothonotary of te Court of Common Pleas of Tioga County personally appeared, Ephriam Jeffers, a resident of Charleston, Tioga Co. Pa. A person whom I certify to be respectable, and entitled to credit, who after being duly sworn according to Law, deposeth and saith, That on the first day of August, A.D.1863 he was Second Lieutenant of Company AG@ of the 45th Regiment Penna Infantry Volunteers, and was in the United States Service for about three years. That George H. Bockus was a member of said Company AG@ and was well and intimately acquainted with this deponent and had been for several years. That at the time the said Geo. H. Bockus entered the service he was a strong healthy man, and performed well his duties as a soldier until the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi, when and where, owing to impurity of water, and unhealthines of the climate he contracted the chronic diarrhea from which, after suffering very much, he died, August first, 1863, and was buried in the Mississippi on the same day, and that he knows personally that the disease of which he died was contracted in the service of the United States, and in the service of his duty, and that he has no interest in the result of this application.

Ida Bockus who was born May 16 A.D. 1858, William Bockus who was born April 6th A.D. 1860 and Amy Bockus who was born Feby 1862 That she attended the birth of the above named in a professional capacity and testifies from a personal knowledge.

That the above were children of Geo. Henry Bockus who was a private in Co. AG@ 45th Reg. Pa. Vols., who is reported to have died in Mississippi on the first day of August 1863 and has no interest in this claim.

State of Pennsylvania ) ) ss County of Tioga ) On this twentieth day of July, A.D. 1865 the Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas, in and for the County and State above named, personally appeared, Charles Coolidge a resident of Charleston township, in the County of Tioga, and state of Penna aged fifty-five years who being first duly sworn according to Law, doth on oath make the following declaration as guardian of the minor children of Geo Henry Bockus deceased, in order to obtain the benefits of the provisions made by the act of Congress, Approved July 14, 1862, granting pensions to minor children under sixteen years of age of deceased officers and soldiers, That he is the guardian of Silas Bockus, aged 14 yrs, Delane Bockus aged 12 yrs, Jeremiah Bockus, aged 9 yrs, Clarissa Bockus, aged 8 yrs., Ida Bockus, aged 7 yrs, and Derilla Bockus aged 5 yrs, Amy Bockus aged 3 yrs. Whose father was a private in Company AG@ Commanded by N. Whitney in the 45th Regiment of Penna Volunteers in the war of 1861. And that the said George Henry Bockus died in Mississippi on the first day of August A.D. 1863. That he died of chronic diarrhea That the mother of the children above named again married being now the wife of Hiram Mossman, having been married on the sixteenth day of October A.D. 1864. That they were married by the Rev. Amos Chapman of Charleston, Tioga County, Penna. That his P.O. address is Wellsboro, Tioga Co., Pa. And he hereby appoints Jerome B. Niles of Wellsboro, Tioga Co. Pa his attorney to prosecute this claim and receive the certificate when issued.

Persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn say that they were present and saw Charles Coolidge sign his name to the foregoing declaration and they further swear that they have every reason to believe from the appearance of the applicant and their acquaintance with him that he is the person he represents himself to be and they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.

Tioga Co. ) ) Penna ) Charles K. Thompson, being duly sworn deposeth and saith that he is a physician and surgeon, and that as such he attended Mrs. Geo. Henry Bockus at the birth of her son, Jeremiah Bockus, which took place on the 16th of August, A.D. 1855. Also at the birth of Lana Bockus which took place in October 14th, 1852, That these children were the children of Geo. Henry Bockus who was a private of Co. G 45th Reg. Pa Vols. Who is reported to have died in Mississippi in August 1863, and that I have no interest in this claim.

Tioga County ) ) ss Pennsylvania ) This is to certify that I have for the last thirty years been well and intimately acquainted with Charles Coolidge No. 104,634, the above applicant for an Pension having lived the whole time in the adjoining township and having seen him every few days during the whole time, and personally know that the said Charles Coolidge has ever been, and is now an eminently loyal citizen, and that he has never, in any way, shape or manner, aided, co______ or abetted the Rebellion, That during the whole of the late civil war, he, the said Charles Coolidge has aided and assisted the National Government, in its struggle to overthrow Rebellion by his means and his votes. That Mr. Coolidge is one of our best citizens and is a farmer by occupation. Witness my hand and seal of office this the fifteenth day of November, 1866.

G 45th Regiment of Penna Volunteers to serve 3 years, or during the war. On the quarterly Return of deceased Soldiers of that Regiment, for the 3d Quarter of 1863, he is reported ADied Aug 1st 1863 at Milldale Miss of disease.@ Nature of disease not stated.
