Albert was the youngest of four Newell brothers from Bradford County who fought for the preservation of the Union. He died 1921 at Troy, Bradford Co., PA and he’s buried in Oak Hill Cemetery at Troy. Albert’s gravestone is inscribed Albert Newell Co. C 7th Pa. Cav.
From Albert’s pension records, three documents have been transcribed and are provided, below.
Document 1 – Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension
This must be executed before a Court of Record or some Officer thereof having Custody of the Seal.
State of Pennsylvania, County of Bradford, SS:
On this 12th day of January A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty seven personally appeared before me a Prothonotary Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas a Court of Record within and for the County and State aforesaid Albert Newell aged 40 years, who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Albert Newell who was enrolled on the 20th day of February, 1864, in Company C of the 7th Regiment of Penna Cav. commanded by Capt. Dixon and was honorably discharged at Macon, Ga. on the 23th day of August, 1865. That his personal description is as follows: Age 40 years; height 5 feet 7 inches; complexion fair; hair brown; eyes blue.
That while a member of the organization aforesaid, in the service and in the line of duty at or near Selma in the State of Alabama on or about the 1st day of April, 1865, he was thrown from his horse and received a severe injury in his back which caused a permanent injury to his spine, and about the same time he incurred rheumatism and chronic diarrhoea, and the affects of said injuries and diseases are still upon him and have been continuous to the present time. That he was treated in hospitals as follows: at Jeffersonville, Indiana.
That he has not been employed in the military or naval service otherwise than as stated above. That he has not been in the military service of the United States since the 23rd day of August, 1865. That since leaving the service this applicant has resided in the Township of Troy – Pa in the State of Pennsylvania, and that his occupation has been that of a laborer. That prior to his entry into the service above-named he was a man of good, sound, physical health, being when enrolled a farm laborer. That he is now partially disabled from obtaining his subsistence by manual labor by reason of his injuries, above described, received in the service of the United States; and he therefore makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the invalid pension roll of the United States. He hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation, John A. Codding of Towanda, Bradford Co., Pa., his true and lawful attorney to prosecute his claim. That he has not received or applied for a pension; that his residence is Troy, Bradford Co., Pa and that his post office address is Troy, Bradford Co., Penna.

On this 57h day of July A.D. one thousand nine hundred personally appeared before me Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, Albert Newell, aged 54 years, a resident of Troy, County of Bradford and State of Pennsylvania who being duly sworn to law, declares that he is a pensioner of the United States, enrolled at the Philadelphia Pension Agency at the rate of twenty four dollars per month, under certificate No. 510592, by reason of disability from chronic diarrhoea and resulting disease of rectum, rheumatism and injury to spine incurred in the military service of the United States, while serving as a Pvt in Co. C, 7th Regt. Pa. Cav. Vols.
That he believes himself to be entitled to an increase of pension on account of an increase of the disability for which he is already pensioned – Rheumatism has resulted in disease of the heart. He is entirely disabled from manual labor by said disabilities. So he was examined nearly a year ago on increase application which was recently rejected and as his disabilities have increased since his examination this application for increase is now filed.
And he hereby appoints with full power of substitution and revocation Albert Morgan of troy, Bradford Co., Pa. His true and lawful attorney, to prosecute this claim. His Post office address is Troy, Bradford Co., Pa.
