This is a transcription of the "Will and
Testament of John Stage" of Town of Chemung, Tioga County, NY (Now
Chemung County) by Joyce Rubens

I got a little surprise when I went to Tioga County (NY) county seat last
summer. I saw a listing for a will for David
Stage. I already had the probate papers and didn't expect much.
What I found was his father's will instead - the will of John Stage. I've
typed it up for another researcher and thought I'd also send it to you
in case you have use for it personally or on the website. Thanks for all
the great stuff on the site. I'm still diggin' :-)
Joyce Rubens
The will was proved August 4, 1827. It reads:
I, John Stage, of the Town of Chemung County of Tioga and State of
New York do make and ordain this may last will and testament, in manner
and form following (unintelligible) today -
First, I give and bequeath to my wife Leah all my estate real and personal
during her natural life for her own support and the maintainence and bringing
up of Sally's two sons, namely, Oliver and John. And further, after the
death of my said wife I give and bequeath all my lands to be equally divided
betwixt Oliver and John the said two sons of Sally. I also give an dbequeath
all my personal property to be equally divided betwixt all my sons and
daughters trz: William, David, John, Levy, James, Henry, and Peter. Ellener,
Leah, Sally, Hannah, Elizabeth and Mary. I do and by these presents nominate
and appoint my wife Leah sole executrix and Jacob Lowman Executor of this
my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other and former wills
by me made at any time heretofore made. Witness where of I have hereinto
set my hand and seal this twenty third day of November in the Year of my
Lord 1817. John Stage
Signed, sealed, published and declared by the said John Stage, as and
for his last will and Testamant in the presence of us, who have subscribed
one named as witnesses thereto in the presence of the said John Stage,
State of New York, County of Tioga. Jacob Kress, William McKinster, Christopher
Tice.
